Something to consider with Edge is Nolan Smith and injuries. Safe to say, he is a stud and still getting better. However, he had injury concerns at UGA, during his rookie year and now he has a torn triceps. He had surgery in late February, I think around the 20th. Full recovery is roughly 6-8 months. BG came back after 5 months and re-tore his in 13 snaps. Let's say Nolan Smith is aggressive with his rebab and is 100%, no questions after 6 months. That timeline puts him coming back in the middle of TC. I'd imagine they might be more cautious with him and start him on PUP. Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't practice at all during the preseason.

Same timetable for BG. My guess is BG doesn't retire and is on call for the Eagles to sign him after week 1 if he's 100% healthy. His salary won't be guaranteed and he doesn't have to go through the summer heat and all of the workouts of TC.

Looking at the roster as of today on PE.com, which includes everyone from futures contracts and PS guys, the Eagles have the following HEALTHY players at Edge/OLB:

-Jalyx Hunt

-Bryce Huff

-KJ Henry

That's it. To say Edge/OLB is a need is an understatement. Howie has serious work to do at the position. I don't think it will be Myles Garrett, but I can see at least 2 players being added via FA and the draft, if not more.

Brandon Graham came back in 2.5 months. But I agree with the general thought.  I don't see Howie just counting on the draft to address DE

Was expecting better from Helm. Still like him as a day 3 add

Fanin might make alot of sense now

That can't happen for 12 months.

My mistake, yea 2.5 months. Not sure where I got 5.

Sign both, go cheap on defense.

Does that mean we won't be resigning Baun?  What about Carter, Mitchell, DeJean, Baun?

As much as the team put up 40 points in the Super Bowl... that wasn't an offensive performance for the ages.  That was a defensive masterclass in domination.  I don't want that to go away.  I still believe in defense in the NFL.

And that's the problem with drafting for that role.  With Smith and Hunt, the Eagles may not actually need a star starting edge.  They need more of a rotational, reliable pass rusher.

If you need immediate contribution but don't need the upside, then you want a vet.

IMO, some of those "high floor low ceiling" draft picks have great polish but struggle initially adapting to the speed and strength of the NFL more than the raw explosive types...and they have a paradoxically longer learning curve until they perfect their craft to compensate.

I just wouldn't draft for immediate contribution, especially when the first pick is at 32.

Agree and kinda screams that DL is where there will be talent that would be gone at 32 in most years

If they can convince him to retire they'll get the money back 1 year after retirement so,  the sooner the better.

In his first big extension they had injury clauses in the contract that protected them.

I hope they did that again.

I believe they have to wait for him to retire until 12 months of no play has happened and THEN they can petition the league for a "Medical retirement", but I think he has to try to come back for 12 months with no success before that can happen.  I don't think he can retire now and then petition later.

Obviously a lot of you are new fans to the franchise and don't know that every year by the time the dust settles Howie fields a team that on paper looks good and often completes it with an unexpected move. He's flat out said they will lose guys in free agency and the offseason isn't over then. Nor is it even over after the draft.  I know the speculation is fun and why we're here but hand-wringing over each tweet is nuts.

And this post indicates that you must be new HERE.

Wait, did Brandon Graham tear his triceps again in the Super Bowl?  Where was this reported?

Every year. Speculation, rumors, "sources" and people overreact.

After day 1 of free agency, panic.

After draft round 1, overreaction.

After they sign a camp body, "well I guess this is all they're doing."

I'm really, really hoping that winning a 2nd SB in 7 years helps reduce the negadelphia, anxiety and overreaction.

And that's fine, you can't expect to blast through the entirety of the playoffs without a scratch or bead of sweat on the brow. The Rams have a pretty good squad, very good young d-line as well. No problems with them playing well that game. Howie needs to continue to add, build, extend to keep teams like them in the rearview mirror, that's all.

Always.

Change of topic for us Phillies fans. I their window with this roster closed last year, especially with the Dodgers doing what they are doing. It can be so hard to gauge minor league talent and much like the Flyers, the Phillies untouchables over the years have rarely panned out. Painter should be here sooner than later but the cupboard in the field and at the plate in the minors looks pretty bare. Hopefully this team catches fire at the right time and doesn't go cold.

Wheeze Kids 2.0.  Just gotta finish the job this time.

Seriously though... this team is WAY younger than that 1983 team.

Left out Micah Parsons. In Howie we trust

There's been no official report of it, but this is a clear post surgery wrap. That's not a normal just healing wrap. When I tore my bicep, I had the exact type of dressing on my arm.

BG came back after 5 months

He tore it against the Rams. He came back in 2.5 months, likely against the advice of his doctors though. Nolan Smith is also much younger.

Right, I made a mistake with BG. A torn triceps recovery is still minimum of 6 months, no matter the age. This puts Nolan Smith on PUP to start the year. He also misses out of an entire offseason of building his body to withstand a heavier workload at end.

Nolan Smith is currently listed at 238 and he played 55% of the snaps this year. I'd wager he was closer to 233-235 by the end of the year. I'd love to see him around 240 or so. I know it's only 2 lbs, but his workload is going to increase.  When Reddick was here dominating at edge, playing 75% of the snaps, he was 241, but also 2 inches shorter with a more compact frame.

I'm not counting on Smith to be 100% by week 1.

Every one score game is 'one play away'.   Eagles were also 'one play away' from getting a 2 score lead.    No need to rehash it.

Sure but that single play is usually a pretty high percentage play for an offense, and for increasing their win probability in that situation. A 3rd and 2 from inside the 10 yard line with 40 seconds left. It's easily the most important play of the entire season. He can hang his hat on that, even if he feels like he didn't get much praise for his performance in super bowl itself.

Not a minimum of 6, an average of 6. There are a lot of factors to account for. Some have fully recovered in as little as 4 months post-op.

I get it but the Rams were down 2 scores at 4 minutes when Barkley scored then needed a missed XP, a bad defensive drive by Eagles, a bad offensive drive by Eagles then another drive by their O.  There were so many chances for them to fail in that mix that it's expected that eventually it did happen.  They were closer to one play happening to cause them to lose by two scores imo.
