I don't watch much of the pre-game stuff, but when I do they're still trying to do the same old schticks that were decades old. Bradshaw can barely speak and is behind on highlights at halftime. Strahan was good then he left for other things. Gronk is a moron.

These shows try to get "characters" to be silly, loud, funny, etc. instead of getting people that are good on TV and give good analysis. I remember a Simpsons skit about how the pre-game is just a bunch of jokes and zingers

Gronk was a horrible addition. They like to just stick the recent retirees into these because they were popular in their career when they suck as a commentator or during the halftime and pregame discussion

Mayer is slow and short-armed, it’d be a hell no from me. And even if he’s somehow better than I expect in 2025, we’re right back to wondering about TE contracts in 2026.

Worked out well with Ronald Darby.

Fair enough, but I wonder what it says about Mayer that the Raiders took his replacement at #13 overall -- with EVERY defensive player still on the draft board -- after trading up for him just a year prior.

It obviously says a whole bunch about the Raiders, but with Antonio Pierce as head coach and they take Bowers rather than the best available defender in the draft?  I wouldn't be spending much time, money, or resources trying to outbid other teams to trade for him.

I am perfectly fine with moving on from Goedert if it means helping to re-sign/sign guys for the defense. Goedert is good but very inconsistent and has missed 14 games over the last three seasons. The TE isn't a big part of this offense either.

He's had pretty garbage OL.

NFL pregame needs more Rob Riggle

Go here: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MahoPa00.htm

Click on the 2018 season and click again on the 2022. Read the per 17 games line from the generated summary.

Now open another page with the same link but click on the 2023 and then the 2024 and read that 17 game per line.

Notice any differences?

How about best 5 year period in NFL history to 10th to 12th best QB?

Goedert is the ideal TE for Hurts. Huge catch radius, great blocker, great YAC, can be Target 1 if needed, doesn't **** if Hurts ignores him for a month.

Yeah I think Goedert adds to the O but you can’t have everyone on O paid highly on a 2nd contract if you expect to pay guys on defense

Yep. Not only that Goedert is 30, due for a new contract, misses a few games due to injury every season, and the TE is the 4th option is this offense with Saquon, AJ, and Devonta.

You also just described a 2nd/3rd round pick and/or cheap one year veteran FA option.

That's why I don't have Becton resigning, unless he comes for a MAJOR discount. But I think that ship sailed for sure after Trey Smith came off the market. He's getting paid BIG and it won't be Howie. The other thing is Cam Jurgens. He may bet on himself and get paid huge next year, like Williams. He could be selling himself short this offseason if he signs, for let's say $12-15M per. Of course I hope he extends this offseason. There's also the issue of his back. At some point funds have to shift back to the defense here. Now and with what's coming. There's a day of reckoning if you pay the whole offensive line massive contracts all at once. One or two got to work for cheap.

Is Ertz a FA? Could we sign him to a one-year deal and draft a replacement this year?

Nonsense. Name 1 FA with Goedert's skills. Gulf between "fine there" and great.

Goedert situation isn't as simple as Slays where the issue is should we pay him or not for one more year. Goedert doesn't have guaranteed money left on his deal and would want an extension. Given his injury history I would understand why the Eagles would be hesitant to extend him passed his age 30 season. I don't think it's going to be as simple as ask him to take a pay cut and he just returns for one year. He's probably going to ask for some type of guarantee in 2026 and 2027 IF he's even open to taking a pay cut.

I'm not even sure he would entertain a pay cut when you have Cole Kmet and Pat Freiermuth both making above $12M a year and Evan Engram at $13.75M.

Yes and Yes. Gesicki is another option who shouldn't break the bank. I would imagine they go young and really cheap though if Goedert gets traded.

Its weird. Every time the Eagles line gives up instant pressure (way too often this year) its a Hurts character flaw for not overcoming it and being smarter. On the other hand Burrow gets blanket immunity because handwavy his line is terrible every year with little actual data behind it. He drops back 41 times a game which is a recipe for disaster in any given week, but its only the line's fault when he gets sacked.

Burrow had a 6.86 sack percentage this year. League average was 6.87. Hurts had a 9.52

A few differences are that Hurts is a monster in the run game and he runs 10 or 11 times a game. On top of the running, the fear of him running makes the Eagles run game work better. (This is true for Josh Allen, Lamar, Vick, Newton, and so on) Saquon was in NY when the Eagles 2022 run game was dominant. Hurts runs into more sacks than Burrow but he also breaks 30 yard runs from the pocket under pressure.

Burrow does not run often and he plays a deep drop, deep pass, style of play. He's going to get sacked more times.

I'm not saying he has a line as good as Philly. I'm saying his play style and his scheme/coaching lead to a bunch of those sacks.

I am good with a tight end by committee for next year. GC looked competent and go find a cheap vet better than Uzoma & a good blocking TE and we will be fine. Barkley's dominance changed the equation there. Put more money into RB postion and something has to give.

Yep get a better blocking TE.  Not sure Mayer fits that

I agree, when Goedert plays he brings a TE1 skillset and while down the totem pole in importance he was still very useful when we were missing AJ. I’m not sure $6M of cap (minus replacement cost) is worth downshifting to a TE2/unknown.

Nice straw man. I never said they would get someone as good as Goedert. I simply said they can find a guy who is more than adequate as a 4th option in the offense who won't complain about not getting a lot of targets (which you said), and they can also do so much cheaper than Goedert. Goedert also misses 3-5 games a year pretty consistently due to injury. Can they get someone better than Goedert like that, no. Can they get someone comparable for cheaper which will enable them to keep some of their defense intact, absolutely. It's time to invest in that position in the draft and get younger there anyway.

I am good with a tight end by committee for next year. DG missed 7 games last year and averaged 4 receptions per game. That's a luxury at this point. GC looked competent and can go find a cheap vet better than Uzoma & a good blocking TE and we will be fine. Barkley's dominance changed the equation there. They put more money into RB postion and now something has to give.

WTF?

"Goedert is the ideal TE for Hurts. Huge catch radius, great blocker, great YAC, can be Target 1 if needed, doesn't **** if Hurts ignores him for a month."

How TF do you read that and think I said just "adequate 4th option"?

BINGO. Goedert at a 14 million cap hit is a poor allocation of cap% for this team. They could draft someone in the 2nd-4th round range AND sign a decent vet TE and slash about 7-8 million in cap dollars. It will be a downgrade but we are talking about a 4th option in this offense and perhaps even 5th if Dotson can get more involved in the offense.
