The issue with Milton Williams, and the reason to let someone else overpay him, is that it seems highly possible/likely that his success is due to playing next to Jalen Carter. And the best evidence o

The only problem I see is we are paying for one year of past production in the future.

He’s not likely to ever repeat that performance. He’s already 28 years old and has had some injuries.

If this is just guaranteeing him the money for this year and next year, that’s fine, but if it’s an actual contract extension it could pose some serious issues a couple years from now.

That specific performance?  No.  But he's still the best RB in the NFL, and to me, there's no debate.  He's a 2k all purpose guy for the next 3 years.

They are waaaaaaaaaaaaay off. Barkley's 2025 cap hit before this deal was $7.6mm. OTC has it right. I modeled it in Excel but having trouble pasting the image.

Best guess on roughly how it looks. Assumes nothing was changed in 2025 and 2026.

It was at $6,861,000 before the extension. I looked at it before it was updated.

I think it’s funny that people think Howie somehow lost cap space

He’s going to sustain a massive injury in that three year period given his age and workload. Poor investment IMO.

I don't see how he would save any. His base salary was vet minimum before. It's going to stay vet minimum but now has more prorated cap hitting in 2025 from the signing bonus.

If Howie ends up with Baun, Burks and Rodgers, I would say he averted a disaster here and did okay. Essentially, that's 3  opening day starters locked up. Unfortunately, Becton & Williams are major beneficiaries of the Trey Smith Franchise Tag and Osa Cowboys extension. I do like Wharton from KC. Had a breakout year. He played well in the Superbowl, especially against the run. Probably will be too expansive as well.

Not sure what to make of the Barley extension.

I am sure that they are going all-in on 2026 compensatory picks.  Williams, Sweat, and Becton will walk. Howie needs lots of guys on rookie deals to offset the dollars to stars.

Steen is ready to be the RG - we won all five games where he played 40+ snaps.  We will draft a quality DT at #32 who will be able to immediately contribute lining up next to Carter.  Not sure about the plan for Edge yet, but through my green tinted glasses I see Huff being a rotational contributor in 2025.

Disagree with much of this. Don't think they're locked in at any one position at 32. Given the draft class I think it's much more likely a good edge is available than DT. But even if not, I expect them to sign or trade for a veteran with upside there. Can't see Huff playing at all next season. Fangio clearly thinks he stinks. They won't force him to play a guy they think is a detriment. He's either traded or is benched and inactive for all of 2025. Also wouldn't rule out Becton, I think his market will be lower than expected, but he definitely could walk.

For basic comprehension of this reality:

The 2022 Bears were 3-14, they were 23 28 on offense and 32 29 on defense.

They still ran for 3000+ yards and 18 TDs

Fields had 1143 and 8. The rest of the NO RUN GAME ON A BAD TEAM had 1871 and 10

  • Braxton Jones - 5th round rookie started 17 at LT
  • 34 year old mediocrity Riley Reiff (of 2017 NFCCG turnstile fame) split time with Larry Borom at RT
  • Sam Mustipher was the Center
  • Codey Whitehair who made a pro bowl once played 12 games at Guard
  • Career nobody Teven Jenkins played 11 at Guard after he was a rookie bust at OT.
  • Journeyman Lucas Patrick filled in at Guard for 5 starts due to injuries.

The line was garbage, the team was bad, the excellent running QB who is way worse a passer than Hurts elevated their run game.

Feel free to retort with more insipid poo flinging and imaginary pocket dimensions where Hurts is bad.

I disagree about the next 3 years part. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a pretty steep decline.

Yea I have no idea where this "$13M cap hit in 2025" is coming from. This was what Spotrac showed

Are these people counting in the escalators and incentives he had on his deal? When he signed it, it had about 10m$ in incentives IIRC. Any incentives he hit in 2024 were going to be applied to the 2025 cap. I know he had a SB one, probably had some rushing yards ones too

so it may have said 6m$ back in October, but it wasn’t 6m$ anymore

Especially after we just dumped money into a RB

This is my worry as well.

There’s also the issue of just general decline given his age and workload.

Predicted this a couple weeks back that he'd be extended or reworked.

Lane Johnson deserves the money.

Didn't Howie already do that a few times already?

If he loses even a small step he's better than most. And still has the power going for him. Kind of like Henry. As long as they don't run him into the ground and preserve him, he will age better than most. Also has less tread, as he didn't play in the playoffs much for 6 years and averaged 200 snaps per year before last year. He's a work out freak on top of it. Playing behind this offensive line also keeps him pretty clean. Barely breaks a sweat most weeks.

I think that was missing some incentives that were earned, but it's somewhere between that and 7.6
