Let's see what happens with our big 4 free agents before we say "everyone that deserves it gets paid on the eagles". I like all the positivity we are getting but we're most likely not bringing all 4 free agents back and all 4 played their asses off and deserve extensions.

Well there's outside praise from national talking heads, and then there's Howie and Lurie who both publicly acknowledged not everyone will be back. So we already know they all won't be back, by choice from the Eagles. If the Eagles want to pay someone, they do. Dickerson, Mailata, Brown, Smitty, Hurts, Barkley, etc. They're going to extend Jurgens, Carter, Nolan Smith, Q, DeJean, these guys are all core and drafted by Howie, they will be retained.

We have all accepted that Williams and likely Sweat will get big paydays elsewhere. They know they have drafted well there with guys ready to step in, and they will add more in this draft. They are likely thinking Ojomo gets more snaps at DT, they bring in another DT. Just like how they lost Hargrave then Cox over 2 years and they were able to replace them. Fangio also has influence on who he thinks he can afford to lose and replace vs who he would want to keep.

Becton was a reclamation project gem, and I like him and would like him back. But I understand the arguments that Steen can replace him and trusting in Stoutland U.

Baun is the one most of us prioritize. I really hope he is back.

So I don't get worked up about "the big 4." The core players from the SB team are returning and the players they choose to let walk are replaceable...or the team overall will accommodate adjusting for their loss.

This is just the hypothetical, it's the offseason thought. I DO NOT WANT TO TRADE AJ BROWN.

But, if the Patriots offered pick 4 and pick 69 in the draft for AJ Brown and pick 32 would you do it?

I DO NOT WANT TO TRADE AJ BROWN. Just clarifying that.

No, it’d do just as much damage in the locker room as it would to the receiving corps.

I think they intended to extend Williams during season but didn’t expect Baun to play so well. It’s a great problem to have because you literally won the Super Bowl and you’ll still end up keeping one very good player except now you’ll get a high comp pick for the other.  Keeping two high priced players was never the plan

Plus won’t impact comp picks

After giving it time to marinate, the Eagles pretty much had to improve Barkley’s contract. That said, they are taking on some big risk paying a guy that kind of money after that kind of workload. I’d much rather they have just given him a few million on top of what he’s making now as a thank you.

Though the tweet says Milton Williams and Jones is more of an edge. Would be good depth if cost is right

A couple of weeks ago, you mentioned taking Hampton at 32 if he got there. I scoffed and said he would be there but eww.

While I vehemently disagree with a round 1 RB at this time (even pre-Barkley extension), it sure sounds like Hampton is going in round 1.

Jones and Hargrave both make sense. Won't hurt comp picks, one knows the system, the other knows the city.

Absolutely not. 4 and 69 would not be enough for AJ.  4 and 69 and next year’s (conditional) 2nd Round pick, which could escalate to their 1st based on performance.  We keep our 32 in any deal.

I agree with this. Abdul Carter is the only player worth selling out for.

Now, I'd pay quite a bit in draft collateral to move up for Mason Graham.

4 would get Graham.

This is why they gave Barkley a raise, which was otherwise irrational.  Playing for the Eagles is on the cusp of becoming a thing.  A real draw.

Before anyone says it already is…I’d disagree.  No slight against the Eagles.  It’s just business in the nfl lately.  Careers are shorter and money (for players) is tighter.  No one wants to play for the handful of perennial disaster franchises, but aside from that…the focus with players and agents is to get as much money as possible for the 2nd or 3rd contract, team and location be damned.  You get a few years to amass life, family, and maybe generation changing wealth and then it’s over.

It doesn’t quite work that way for impact players in other sports.

The fact that you’ve got a top 5 pick and a future HOF FA making (only semi serious) comments about wanting to play for the eagles is a big deal.  For the select few players in the league each year that may change teams and are not prioritizing financial considerations, it’s wild to know that the Eagles may be the destination.

What’s the furthest trade-up a Super Bowl champion team has ever made at the following draft?  I suspect not all that far.

EDIT.  Looks like in 1995 the Niners traded up from 30 all the way to #10 to draft J.J. Stokes.  That’s further than I expected.

All four are getting paid as a result of their time with the Eagles.  Once all four are signed … regardless of where they sign … ask them what their feelings are at that moment for the Eagles.  All four will be nothing but positive and thankful.  Their lives are very much better for the time they spent as Eagles.  Every one of them will look at their situation as win-win.

Interesting

I wasn't even thinking back to Van Buren who was a beast.

I will settle for an "of the Super Bowl era" argument for Saquon in a few years.

Probably makes more sense than Javon Hargrave.

One thought about Saquon’s workload is the amount of yards his OL gave him before first contact.  The workload isn’t a 2,000 yard workload … probably less than 2/3 of that.

Rice was 16 for the SB champs in 1985. Not as far as 10 but it worked out well.

I have a spreadsheet of all draft pick trades over the last 15+ years.  I’ll check it out tomorrow morning and let you know.

I can’t get on board with that. He had damn near 500 total touches this season including the playoffs. That’s an absurd workload.

It may or may not work out but I guarantee you Howie did all the projections of Saquon and the cap and everything else.  He didn’t just wake up and say let’s irrationally reward Saquon and figure out the implications later

I think so. He’s just a really complete back. Size, speed, can run through you or make someone miss, can catch and block.

Personally, he’s not actually the style I tend to prefer. I was really high on Gibbs and Achane 2 years ago. That’s more of what I look for — explosive speed and cutting ability. I think it tends to translate easier to the NFL.

But if we are going to be a run heavy team, I think we need a backup who can shoulder a load. Hampton would fill that role. Henderson, Tuten or Giddens are probably the best mix of lead back and the traits I prefer.

Howie’s no dummy, and we all saw first-hand how important Barkley was to a Super Bowl championship, but this is a risky extension.
