Davis is a mystery to me.  As in, he seems like a genuinely nice guy, but, does he have the right demeanor/personality/attitude for the NFL?  He has all the physical tools you could ever hope for, but I truly wonder if it's his mentality that stops him from becoming the dominant player he could be.

Effort, work ethic, desire to be great, etc.  Does he have it?  Will he be a "contract year" kinda player?

He just reminds me of a gentle giant type and does "just enough" to keep a role on a defense but just doesn't have the desire to be the best he can be.

Its in there and we see flashes.  We actually saw a little more of that this year.   And, seeing that he's slimming down already this offseason is a good sign for the future, imo.   Maybe he's finally becoming a professional.   We are going to need him this season.  Hopefully he can be a little more effective in a pass rushing role, while maintaining his anchor even at the slimmed down weight.

Shoen doing his best to wreck the NYG future ahead of his last season.

Next move, draft a bad QB that seals the deal.

Well they couldn’t get any worse after losing to the Eagles 3rd string QB with backups and practice squad players

I think how he handled Fangio’s coaching/departure and the Dolphins letting him walk after McDaniel admitted there is a culture problem speaks volumes.

I doubt it - maybe to use in a trade but you don’t take RB’s in the first round to have them sit for 2-3 years.  Top RB’s are "plug and play” players.

The assumption in taking him that high would have to be that the goal wouldn't be to have him 'sit', but to use him in a RB by committee type situation.  I think the goal would be to get him roughly 10-15 touches a game, taking the load off Barkley, who's work load should be decreased to 15-20 touches a game.   That would enable the Eagles to remain a run heavy team, but without over taxing either one.  Sort of the Thunder and Lightning backfield the Eagles used back in the day with Watters and Garner when Gruden called it the "Jersey Shore" offense, rather than the West Coast offense.  I don't think the Eagles will do it, but if they did and went with that plan, I'd be on board with it.   I just think they can get a similar result from a later pick than Jeanty.

Yeah I figured this comment was coming.

My post was less about judging the talent of the one particular player, more about judging their overall competency / strategy as an organization.

Do you think the NYG are now putting themselves in the conversation as an NFC contender?

It's been said before but it's worth repeating: Burks may not have signed here even if we matched that offer. It would be nearly impossible for him to start here, whereas he has a very good shot to start in Cincinnati. He may not have many contracts left in his future and I'm guessing he wants a shot at making starter money on his next one.

Not sure I agree with the impossibility of it, but that the Eagles clearly WANT Trotter to take the job.

Would’ve liked to have Hargrave back.

Fangio is also a notorious hard ass. Incredible coach, very happy he is here. But there will be guys who don't want to play for him (see the Dolphins). We're gonna have to accept that.

I'm actually very happy to accept that.  A soft DC is never a winning formula.  Fangio rebuilt this defense in a year from 'worst to first' because of his staunch commitment to perfection and being a stickler for details.   The fact that he showed them the Super Bowl tape and was pissed about the fact that they ended up giving up 22 points is a great thing, in my mind.  It makes me think that there won't be much of a Super Bowl hangover from the defense, because he didn't even let them have a week to enjoy the Super Bowl before holding their feet to the fire, even in an amazing performance!  22 points allowed makes it look good, but not dominant, in the end.

We have some young talent that we didn't have to rely on the last couple of seasons.  These guys are going to get more coaching and conditioning.  I'm curious to see what Byron Young has to offer us, too.  We stashed him all season for a reason.

They got better at safety, doesn't mean their team got better.

Yes, Fangio has earned my trust in terms of seemingly doing the best with most of what he is given. I push back a bit on the idea that he’s in the kitchen with Howie based on the Bryce Huff signing.

I guess that is an imperfect metaphor- Vic is definitely in the kitchen, but Howie is buying the groceries.  Who's making the list?

I agree, but in terms of retaining the talent, I think it would be malpractice on the part of Howie if he didn't sit down with Vic and have many long and hard conversations about each and every one of the impending free agents, and about what the plan would be if they retained each... and if they let each one go.  And then Howie used that in his process to develop the offseason plan.   Last year sits as a very different situation, because Vic was coming in from the outside... so the collaboration wouldn't be as seamless.  And from the sound of what we'd heard, Howie and Vic clearly didn't see eye to eye on Baun.  Howie had one plan... Vic clearly had another.  Fortunately, Howie didn't force his hand into using Baun in the role he signed him for.  But, I think that Huff was just a big whiff.  I'm not sure what happened there, but that's one of the biggest Free agent flops in Eagles history.

But, going into this year, I think Howie and Vic had many conversations about roster building for the upcoming season.  So, I think that Vic definitely is playing a big role in terms of how the team is operating.   And I don't think its a coincidence that Baun was signed before the tampering period started.  And Burks being allowed to walk for so little would imply that Vic is far less worried about replacing him as a reserve LB.

They got Adebo as well.  Not saying their contenders but two solid signings for them.  Now lets just hope they mortgage all their future picks and do something stupid at QB

The idea you'd make someone the highest paid Tailback in NFL history then immediately draft a 1st round RB.

We probably shouldn't but if you say it like that it actually does sound a lot like something Roseman would do. 😄

After the last SB win, you can argue the Eagles MO was to keep the band together for one more year, and the fall off was a learning point. Burks would have stayed, as would have Slay, etc.  You can't be sentimental in sports; always move forward.

Funny you say that.  I was going to pose the question to the blog:  what is the biggest lesson from 2018 that applies to this off-season?

Yours is probably the best answer

How can you say that?  Nearly impossible?

It's nearly impossible that the exact thing we saw in the playoffs would continue next season?

He just won the SB with the best defense.. pretty easy to accept that we won't have some guys that don't want play for him at this point.

It's just annoying how every other team in the league that makes a move and it's, oh they over paid, oh that guys not that good, this that and another.
The giants got better, he's better than any safety we have. There's not one move they can make that will make them a contender, they needed to make multiple moves and they just made one great one.
Not sure how that's a bad thing at all and why it can't be recognized as a strong on the field football move. I just don't understand that.

Yup, I mean we didn't invent that idea but yeah the Vikes just got better with those moves.
Hoping Howie does something today.

Good move, bad move the Giants are a trainwreck who will most likely have a new coach & GM 10 months from now. The Vikings are closer to a contender but not really one either.

I'm fine with letting Sweat, Williams, and Rodgers walk at their numbers, but Burks at just $2M seems like a pretty obvious miss so far. That one just doesn't make much sense to me.

I’m going to wait to see what happens when it’s all said and done. You’d assume he’s clearing space for a reason. As of now there are lots of holes (DT, EDGE, OG, LB, CB, TE?, Future OT). Some wouldn’t have been expensive to fill.

Other than the Veloci-Coaster, Megatron is the best part about Universal Studios.
