Calling out Brown for slacking off a bit when he's in with the back ups because we're up 5 scores in the dying seconds of the SB is not a serious review of his suitability.

I remember the game thread and pretty much to a man we were all calling KC cheap for going for it against the scrubs when they didn't have a snowball in hell's chance of coming back.

Quite apart from which there's video from throughout the regular season of CJGJ getting burned for multiple TD's and he'd trained with the ones all year.

How about calling him out for getting burned over and over again as a rookie.

Have we heard the money on AJ Dillon yet?

You want competition, sure.

But Brown isn’t the type to take anything for granted. That’s one of his big strengths: football character.

Unfortunately what he lacks is football IQ and thats what Fangio demands

look at the keys in the back 7. Baun, Q, coop, dean, slay, reed. All smart players. You have to be to make all the sight adjustments. Thats what got Coop the pix 6 in the SB. Reading Baun carrying the under route and adjusting in a blink

Think Howie has a lot of confidence in Fangio's judgement concerning which young players they can coach up, the same way he probably defers to Stoutland on the OL.

In the NFL, young players often make a big jump when they get significant practice and playing time, the PS isn't the same as being on the roster and dressing for games in terms of development.

At the same time, as we saw recently, players hitting 30 can fall off the cliff at any time. So there's no strategy that is risk less.

There goes the blocking tight end!

I’m guessing all 3 had check ins and not the market they hoped, all for a variety of reasons.

I was starting to wonder when teams would catch on to the Stoutland factor. Every OL FA that leaves here may be ok but I can’t remember a single one that played as good or better.

Seumalo comes to mind but, yes, I take your point.

Mark my words … back to back #1s.

Even if they brought back everyone it would be hard to maintain a #1 defense back to back years.

They can still be top 5 or top 10 and everything will be just fine.

Who is the front runner at Safety?

Lewis Cine or Sydney Brown

Odds:

  1. A player to be added in FA or draft
  2. Brown
  3. Cine. Everyone needs to stop mentioning him, he's a depth player with no chance to start.

So I was trying to find guys Howie could trade for at positions of need. Lower cost potential upside guys that won't cost premium picks most likely. I brought up Jermaine Johnson a bunch of times. No idea if he's available.

Another guy is David Ojabo. Does he just suck? He might. But was great in college and word was going into that draft before he got hurt that the Eagles liked him a lot. Probably could be had for a late round pick swap tbh.

Ojabo had a nasty injury on his pro day and then partially tore his ACL in November 2023.  Seems a good dude, but has had that injury bug in the past few years.  A prime trade candidate for Howie

RIP Jack Stoll.

Brown has shown so little that I don’t think we can settle for competition. We need to add a real starter or draft a guy high.

This isn’t like playing Hunt and Ojomo or to a lesser degree Ringo. Brown hasn’t shown a damn thing.

Sidney Brown comes across as an out of control missile mentality as a player.  He'll hit what he sees, but hasn't met a play fake he won't bite on either, etc.

It's very realistic that:

  • Howie trades back, saves a 1st round contract and collects additional pick
  • 2nd round pick: DE
  • 2nd round pick: Safety
  • Rest of the picks: TE, other depth
  • He's definitely not using all 4 picks in the 5th round he will be moving around the draft

The holes at DE and Safety could be filled with top draft selections. One or both could be day 1 starters, or they could become starters while a stop gap free agent or current depth player holds the spot for now.

And these additions are joining the core star talent at every level. Carter, Smith, Baun, Q, DeJean. They'll be in good shape as long as they address those open positions well.

Fair enough.  Here’s a follow up question, if Tyler Warren or Colston Loveland are still on the Board at #32, do you take either of them over an Edge or DT?

Yes - because the depth at edge/DT both already on our roster and in the draft have less of a drop off than day1 starting all-around TEs

Howie will not just move around the draft, he'll trade some of those extra picks in 2025 and 2026 for veterans to plug holes after they've had a good look at their own players.

First, he'll go shopping in the bargain bin, then they'll see how the team looks in TC, come the last couple weeks, when teams are trying to get value for players on the bubble, he'll pick up a couple players, either veterans at the end of contracts or young players blocked who they liked at the draft and think they can coach up.

Howie never sleeps.

Brown is the safety version of Ernie Sims, can we stop handing him a spot?

Thanks

Brown should be allowed to compete for a spot, but any notion that he's the unchallenged starter is insane.

I don't feel the same at DT. I trust Davis/Ojomo to be good at DT2. Just need some more bodies to develop behind them for 2026+

Not that I think Brown is all that, but how do you feel about N. Smith after his rookie season or Dean after his first two seasons?

So far we’ve brought in the following rookies that play safety for a visit:

  • Major Williams, S, Carson-Newman (AS)
  • Donovan McMillon, S, Pittsburgh (AS)
  • Trey Rucker, S, Oklahoma State (AS)
  • Malachi Moore, S, Alabama (FM*)
  • Andrew Mukuba, S, Texas (CM)

Mukuba is the only guy who has a realistic chance of being taken as high as the third round. We’re targeting day 3 picks. What does that tell you?

Hope they get a pass rusher today. As for DT not a ton left out there. Probably gonna have to come via the draft.

Bingo. I agree

Brown is a Canadian that is new to football.  I'm not saying that means he will learn,  but it is soon to write him off after 2 years, one of which was spent rehabbing an ACL rather than focusing on football.

I think people who say he stinks are being too harsh too soon. While at the same time,  this can't really be the plan to go with him as the unchallenged starter.  And if you have a chance at Starks, Brown shouldn't preclude you from drafting him.

A huge part of what made the Fangio defense so successful was how disciplined everyone was. Brown is still mistake prone, and doesn't tackle well enough.

I'd also like to see them sign a steady vet like Epps or Mills in case they don't land a real threat to start on the draft.
