That's not really a comment on him per se. I like him a lot. He was one guy I really wanted in the draft (although I thought he'd go later cause I'm just an armchair GM). More a comment on handing young players starting jobs based on upside and potential in general. At a position that important I always want a viable back up plan.  As of right now that's Huff/Uche. Meh...

The Eagles have not historically chosen to throw their draftees immediately into the fire.  They have almost always exercised more caution than Fangio exercised this year.  That may have been situational, or it may be that Fangio is less risk averse.  Time will tell.

On defense any DT or edge could ease in as a rotational player.  It's really a perfect situation .

That is the glass half empty perspective.  Here is a glass half full perspective.

I agree that Becton was a major force in second level blocking, but I’m not ready to give a final grade to Steen on that particular aspect of O-Line play.  He will begin OTAs as the RG taking all the first team reps.  Lane is very likely to take him under his wing, building chemistry.  Jurgens will be one season more experienced at Center and the frequency of assignment breakdowns/miscommunications that happened between Center and Guard last season should be significantly diminished.  Barring injuries, the O-Line should be just as effective this season as last.

That is an optimistic take.

I think even in a best case scenario that Steen is a noticeable downgrade as a run blocker. You just can’t teach what Becton has. And I don’t think Steen is better in pass blocking either, though I think coaching and unit cohesion can impact this a bit more.

Will we still have a good line (barring injuries)? Almost certainly. Can Steen be a good player? Absolutely. But Becton just has talent that Steen does not.

I agree.  Perfect situation.  That is what Hunt had last year.

As you know I was a Becton advocate of almost as high an order as you and @just relax, but I believe you are rushing to judgment on Steen.  Time will tell regarding that.  I believe … and hope … that you are wrong.

We are family, all our brothers and sisters and me!  An homage to Stargell.

And ensure their firing by doing so.

Or maybe you got it wrong which is why he got 2/20

I dont think its necessarily talent that becton has that sets him apart from Steen its just sheer size that separate the two.

Its not like steen is some slow footed plodder nor is he some shrimp.

He has good length size and athletic traits, Becton just has unreal size at guard, hes possibly the biggest nfl player to ever play guard.

You two need to get a room.

Well said.  Very well said.

Anybody have under the radar free agents that are still out there?

The dropoff wasnt that noticeable to Steen, honestly.

i am all for drafting an OL if there is a guy we like. Not why the NC State tackle Belton seems to have fallen down boards so much

Nah im just not going to humor him thinking he never gets it wrong 😁😁

If TE was the only offensive pick in the first 4 rounds I wouldn't be upset.  I wonder if a slight trade down at 32 would be a option.

And the marginal increase in size doesnt mean much. steen is huge too and less plodding. steen wont have as mich brute strength but he shouldnt be on the ground as much either. Becton was useless on the tush push. I imagine is difficult not to play too high when you are 6-8 at guard

RB should be in there too imho.

i am not as convinced we will go DL heavy this draft

Howie is setting it up to take best available.  They can go a number of positions.  CB and safety should be in play as well. I agree a RB will be drafted.  I think there should be good options in the 4th round if they wait.

I agree, I liked Becton, when he was able to get out in space and make contact on a single block it was devastating, he just destroyed dudes and as a pass blocker when he got his hands on a guy it was like running into a wall, but his lateral movement was limited and he played too high at times, at 6'8" im sure it was tough for hurts to see over him and as you stated he was on the ground a bit too much for my liking, I wish him the best and ill Always be grateful for his contributions to a superbowl win and I think Steen has the potential to be better, hes quicker and more athletic and plays with better pad level, we probably wont see the highlight  obliteration of a hapless  defender once a game but Steen should be solid.
