Goedert was still injured at this point if I remember correctly.

So it would make sense to get Calcaterra on the move as much as possible. He’s pretty good at blocking when he has a head of steam. Inline, not so much.

Yep. I made a comment much to that effect, IIRC, so I certainly agree.

Hopefully no one was looking forward to today's lottery watch. The first leg of it is already screwed up by our very own 76ers. Idiots won.

I can't stand them

Today is a good lottery watching day. 6ers, Nets, and Raptors all playing.

Good call!

Again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  You saw something different than TEW or Just Relax saw. I personally saw something closer to what they saw rather than what you saw.

Over the years I have observed that mistakes matter a lot to you.  I once had a client who said to me multiple times, "Your company really frustrates me.  You do ten things right, and then do something wrong, and you are worse off than when you started!”  I think you and Paula think a lot alike.  On the other hand, TEW (like me) is often overly optimistic … sometimes to a fault.  Just Relax is a well balanced rock in the middle.

FWIW, the three of you are some of my favorite posters.

Because the mistakes are where you learn and hopefully get better

Listening to NFL Radio this morning they had a Falcons beat writer on, talking about needing more than one edge rusher.  They discussed how the Falcons should be interested in trading for Huff

Their DC is also the same guy that was Jets DC when Huff had his good year so he would know how to use him

As long as you look at the offseason so far through the lens of "they have no real intention on repeating this year" the lack of moves is a lot easier to take. They'll sign the 1 year $1M contracts at the bottom of the roster, drafting some guys and if they perform well then great! If not they'll gear up for a run next year.

Not my ideal strategy but I can see why they would do it

76ers can’t even tank correctly. Gonna be awesome when they lose their first round pick

As much as I would love to get rid of huff, it would need to be accompanied by a FA pickup like Zadarius Smith. We cannot go into the draft with just hunt and smith

This is the EDGE I want. Good arm length + twitched up. He's athletic enough to drop. He's only 21 (22 in Sept). He did 22 reps on the bench at 34' arms too.

I'm big on bend for pass-rushers and he has it. Stylistically, he's a good backup to Hunt/Smith as Fangio can call any play with those 3.

My concern with him is setting the edge.

That's not what they are doing.  More reallocating resources to the right spots.  Eagles will be plenty good next year and may well repeat.

They'll be good, they're likely not going to be as good as this past year. Jalyx Hunt, Trotter Jr, and Sydney Brown need to be able to handle starting roles, huff needs to step up, they need to draft depth for the DL and they need to be good, and Ringo needs to step up (i have the most confidence in this move).

That's a ton of hoping. Still a lot of offseason left but it's easy to stomach the lack of movement with the mindset that they're gearing up for next year

What if that guy came as a rd 7 or UDFA?

I think people want experience more than anything. But Akili Arnold is a high floor prospect who will go very late due to age, and a poor pro day 40. He is a good cover guy, and just very sound all around.

Reminds me of Kinchens who could clearly play and teams stayed away due to his 40. He had a very nice year as a rookie.

I can’t speak to Arnold, but there’s a path for late round/UDFAs to get to the field and it’s between the ears if they have the baseline athleticism to compete.

If anyone accepts Huff in a trade without asking us to eat some of his money, Howie will charter a limo to drive him to the airport immediately.

NO CHANCE we get that lucky to save $17m of cap.

If you follow my posts at all you would realize how wrong you are. I am the type of fan who will almost always choose to view the glass half full and give Howie's moves and the players on the field the benefit of the doubt. Howie has let Williams, Sweat, Becton, Burks, Rodgers, and CJGJ go this off-season and I have vehemently defended 5 of those 6 moves.

There is just way too much evidence against Brown to think otherwise. He was given opportunity after opportunity as a rookie to beat out a bum like Terrell Edmunds, and he couldn't. They tried playing him in the slot and he got torched left and right. He plays so fast and aggressive that he gets himself out of position to make easy tackles. He is a nightmare when asked to play deep safety and be aware of coverage assignments and space. Fangio elected to play a bum like McCollum over him as a the 3rd safety. Please explain to me what you have seen out of Brown in his two NFL seasons that leads you to believe he can be a good 3rd S, let alone a good starting S, other than blindly believing he will because he was a 3rd round pick.

The quality of the evidence is suspect in my opinion.  Virtually none of it comes from snaps with the starters.  And lots of it is in garbage time where the DC isn’t deploying normal scheme variations.  The old adage "consider the source” seems to apply.

You may prove to be right, but never even trying him seems like the waste of an asset for no particularly good reason. What is accomplished by throwing him in the trash can at this point in time?

The defense will probably take a step back.  We can still win the SB if that happens, especially if the offense takes a step up.  Which certainly is possible.

This.  Sydney Brown was a rookie, and then was coming off a late 1st season ACL in his 2nd year on a loaded roster.

We don't yet know what he is, and now we're going to find out for real.

There's a very real chance Sydney Brown is a combination of Ernie Sims & Andrew Sendejo.

So he sucked as a rookie because he was a rookie, and he sucked in his second year because he was coming off of an injury. What is the excuse going to be when he sucks again this coming season? Some of you just need to watch a guy play and trust what you see. Between pre-season, and games in his rookie year and second year I have seen plenty of him to know that he doesn't the necessary discipline or instincts to play S in a Vic Fangio scheme and if you can't draw a conclusion from Vic choosing to put a bum like McCollum out on the field over him this past season I don't know what to tell you.

I don’t know you as well as a poster as I know Toast Jenkins but I get the sense that you and he share a common trait … that mistakes matter a lot to you.  To put that into context I find myself remembering a client I once had who said to me multiple times, "Your company really frustrates me.  You do ten things right, and then do something wrong, and you are worse off than when you started!”  I think you and Paula, that client, think a lot alike.  Also like Toast, I get the sense that there is very little grey in your world.  Things are either black or white.

Of course all of the above is little more than hot sir, but it is an opinion I’ve become somewhat comfortable with.

Think you are going to be pleasantly surprised.  Offense is set, with TS and GC to fill in.  Defense needs a little work but Fangio gets to pick his own guys now.  And we have the experience and confidence of winning a title under our belt.  The rest is just Howie moving dollars around to stay under the cap.  We will be in the mix again and like our chances.

I guess we disagree on what sucks is. I saw a guy who made mistakes, but also made plays. Playing time and experience goes a long way.

See my comment above. I tend to agree with you on this.

I hope Sydney puts it together, and the cream rises to the top (you could say that about Cine as well)… but hope isn’t a strategy, so adding a S with a higher floor seems prudent.

I thought maybe Huff for Pitts made sense since they are stuck with an 11 mil option on Pitts which is too high so might offset each other a bit. That’s assuming Goedert is gone

They don't offset though.  We'd still be on the hook for Huff and have to pay Pitts

I think there’s a strong chance the Eagles move up in round 1. They’ll move up for most likely an edge rusher, maybe a DB (S or CB) they really like. I initially thought maybe a tight end that drops, but why trade up for a guy who’s going to be your number 4 option on offense?

I could possibly see Goedert or maybe even Dotson traded on draft day.

The Safety from South Carolina would be a great addition, as would Starks from Georgia.  I haven’t learned about any CB so far that has caught my interest.  @just relax may have thoughts about the Michigan CB that he wants to share.
