Draft in a month.

So does BPA really apply at #32?

Or at that point has the talent curve flattened out enough to where it's become tiers?  And, if so, are position need, importance, and scarcity the deciding factors?

I remember being very surprised when Howie traded as far down as he did in 2018 after winning the Super Bowl.  That trade with BAL was #32 and 132 for #52 and 125, along with a 2nd round pick in 2019.  He obviously viewed the talent between #32 and 52 as rather flattened out -- although he did trade up with IND to get Goedert with the #49 pick.

I guess what surprised me more was Howie making the trade for 2019 draft capital rather than accumulating more 2018 picks in exchange.  The Eagles had very few picks in that draft, mostly due to the Wentz trade.

I will be interesting to see what Howie does in this draft.  The Eagles have a decent amount of draft capital this time around (three 5th round picks rather than one each in 5, 6, and 7).  My sense is if someone falls unexpectedly to them from higher up on their board Howie will make the pick; otherwise, he'll have no problem if another team wants to get a 5th year option on a player and moving back a bit.

I think this Eagles draft will be heavy in the trenches again.  Two picks on DL and at least one on OL.

4 of the 5 will likely go in the 2nd (or earlier, in one case).

I can’t get the tweet to load, but I wonder how this one ends.

I think this draft is less about tiers and more about "flavors.” There are a lot of guys who you might rank equally in a vacuum but have vastly different profiles from a skill set or floor/ceiling perspective.

Scheme fit and risk tolerance are going to be how most boards are decided, and for the Eagles especially. I don’t think position is going to be too big of a factor. We have some positions that we obviously want to add talent to, like EDGE and OT, but I don’t think it’s going to factor too much into the rankings we have of players.

I'll skip to the finale.

And patience.

Howie has done a nice job patching holes. We’re set for all 22 starters plus STs. We have coaches who have demonstrated that they can coach guys up. A lot of teams need their picks to come in and start right away. That’s bad for rookies but teams do it anyway. Or, they do what Washington did and sell their souls and gut their draft picks for vets on the cusp of declining. No patience with either strategy. With patience and good coaching however, you can get more talented players who don’t have to be thrust into the fire before they’re ready. How many teams are willing to carry a guy for one or two+ years with no expectations until that second or third year? How many teams can afford to do that?

Here's part 1 of the video I made of plays with multiple radio/tv calls. It can't be embedded because the NFL claims the copyright (of course), but click the link and you can watch it on our YouTube channel. Part 1 goes up to the pick six.

In the description, I set chapter points for each play, each version. So you can skip around if you wish. But to help the channel, let it run all the way through at least once. Otherwise YouTube will ding it a little in terms of promoting it.

That thought is at the forefront of my mind when I think about Steen and Keegan and Brown and Ringo.

I think BPA is appicable but positional value matters far less.

When I read this in the Coaching Changes article on pe.com I can’t help but think … succession plan.

Exactly.

Though I do feel we are a bit pressed at some positions, such as DL, to at least get rotational production.

Our DBs are a bit concerning as well. I’m higher than most on Ringo and Brown, but even if we assume that they are starting caliber, our depth leaves something to be desired.

Really, that was the tradeoff we made this offseason: financial stability in exchange for questionable (not necessarily bad) depth overall. We are counting on the coaching you mentioned to solve that with draft picks. It makes perfect sense in theory, but it is hard to execute in practice. The Eagles have been much better at this than most, though, as you’ve said.

I would love that  minus the jack Sawyer pick.

It’ll be interesting to see how things fall and what direction Howie decides to go.

I thought for the longest time that the pick was going to be the best DL available but if there’s a DB or guard they really like, I think they pull the trigger.

Also, from everything I’m seeing, the best DT available at pick 32 won’t be much better than the best DT available at 96. So it’ll probably be an edge rusher.

That was my least favorite of the picks, but he was the best of the Edges at that time given that I knew they had Stewart and Norman-Lott much further down in their rankings.

I don’t understand the Mbow pick.
