The answer to those questions are pretty straightforward.  The opposing Offense calls pass plays and running plays.  There are typically many more of the former than the latter, frequently more than twice as many.  In 2024 the Eagles D faced 416 running plays and 583 passing plays. The Super Bowl proportions were 11 running plays compared to 38 passing plays.

Carter is effective in both.  Williams was more effective in passing plays. Davis was more effective in running plays.  Fangio matched skills to what type of play he expected the opponent to call.  Classic platooning.

So why was he at 50% the first four weeks and everything magically changed after the bye week? Are you suggesting his decrease in snaps from week 5 onward was only due to the opposing team play calls?

This is silly Matt. Either you trust Vic Fangio or don’t. It’s pretty clear that Fangio decided after the first four weeks of the season that there was too much Jordan Davis and not enough results. So he changed that by limiting his playing time.

eagles are one

3 coaches are recently former eagles coordinators. Would be surprised if any of their teams vote for ban

Texans GM said don’t ban it

Bucs HC said don’t ban it

I think Falcons HC said don’t ban it

Patriots HC said don’t ban it

Raheem Morris has been one of the most outspoken coaches on it and said he wanted it banned years ago. I wouldn’t count on the Falcons.

This whole thing about banning the play is so annoying.  I honestly think it has more to do with the aesthetics/optics of the play...casual football fans that complain because it doesn't look pretty.  It's not an "exciting play" to watch, etc.

If we're being honest, the shove play doesn't look that much different from a QB sneak.  It's basically a variation of the QB sneak.

Should they ban that play as well?  How bout when a RB is stood up by a defender or 2 and his progress is stopped but then an O-lineman comes in and pushes him forward a few yards?  Shouldn't that be banned as well then?

This stupid argument is still going on? 🙄

But the tush-push leads to more offense and more points because of its success.

But not in an exciting way to the casual observer!

Exactly.  But for whatever reason, people point to the tush push as the "it's not a football play".  #haters

On the tush push…

Philadelphia GM Howie Roseman defended the play, asking the room for the injury data showing that the concept was creating player-safety issue, then asked for the statistics that show it to be demonstrably more dangerous than a conventional quarterback sneak. NFL chief medical officer Allen Sills returned volley in saying that while there haven’t been a preponderance of injuries on the play, the league’s feeling was that when an injury does eventually happen on it, based on the players’ posture, it could be catastrophic.

Then they should ban the QB sneak because on a QB sneak the postures would be the same, the only difference is the players push Hurts. But they’d all come off the ball the same and be in the same position. They’re all morons.

I actually think some of that could potentially be explained away by Eagles playing in close games against running teams and losing two of those games.

Lafleur is a more run-centric coach in neutral situations. Atlanta was expected to hide Cousins after his miserable week 1 where he couldn’t move. We trailed NO until late. Tampa smoked us. Then we won every game the rest of the way except a game where Washington was in comeback mode the entire second half. Naturally Davis would play less when the Eagles are ahead because he isn’t a pass rusher.

If we're banning stuff because of player safety, let's start with Thursday night football.  That actually has a history of producing injuries.

I have no problem with the league banning the tush push, but the verbiage is going tough to write and thus difficult to enforce unless they ban  offensive players pushing ball carriers. Even then, you’re going to see OL jumping into scrums to pop defenders holding up the ball carrier and perhaps inadvertently pushing the ball carrier. I don’t think the NFL wants to see games come down to calls like that.

Mock Idea

Trades

1.  Trade pick 32 and a 5th round pick next year for pick 37 and Michael Mayer
2.  Trade Goedert and pick 96 to the Colts for pick 80
3.  Trade pick 134 and 168 for pick 124 and 198 with GB

Draft

1.  Pick 37 - Donovan Jackson - OG Ohio State
2.  Pick 64 - Kevin Winston Jr.  - S Penn State
3.  Pick 80 - Omarr Norman Lott - DT Tennessee
4.  Pick 124 -  David Walker - Edge David Walker - Central Arkansas
5.  Pick 161 - Zah Frazier - CB - UTSA
6.  Pick 164 - Jalen Travis OT - Iowa State
7.  Pick 165 - Isaac TeSlaa - WR - Arkansas
8. Pick 198 - Shaun Dolac - LB Buffalo

Sign

1. Stephon Gilmore CB to one year deal  (Depth/Competition for Ringo and Veteran Presence)

Thoughts?

Jonathon Jones: The original proposal was for 15 minutes, but the league was concerned longer OTs could bleed into the next window of games. So they’re keeping it at 10.

Nice to see the reason wasn’t for fairness but for TV.

Yeah - who we played and what they were trying to do... and the defense overall might have been more effective with Dejean on, Huff off and the offense playing complementary football, etc.  It's a very fluid situation, and to say Vic was displeased with JD based on snap counts seems reductive.  I guess if he was impressed, he might have played JD more - but he would've been competing mostly with Milton for those snaps who's honestly better suited for that role, right?

Sean McVay said the Rams are scheduled to meet with Drew Rosenhaus, who represents RB Kyren Williams, today in Palm Beach. Yesterday, Les Snead said the Rams "would definitely like to engineer a long-term partnership” with Williams.

I do not understand their love affair with Williams. Nice player, hard worker, but he’s a fumbler.

I think the refs should be able to call the rule by the nature of the law - like you know pornography when you see it.

Good to know potential playoff spots and maybe even jobs are dictated by getting to the next window of games on time…

Nick Sirianni is taking a different approach from two years ago — there's am emphasis on evolving.

He referenced his niece winning player of the year for varsity basketball as a 7th grader.

He called her with a message: "The better you get, the harder you have to work. If you stay exactly the same, if you average 17 a game and stay exactly the game, you'll average 12 next year. Becuase they're going to be on you and figure you out."

Yeah, I’m thinking a rule something along the lines of banning the immediate or intentionally designed play to push a player taking the snap under center, blah, blah, blah.

13 hours ago, HazletonEagle said:

Even if that were not true, it would still be hard to argue that his ~12 snaps had a major role in making this a #1 defense. Thats just not a significant amount of playing time. Hard to be worth much with that workload.

There is certainly an argument that his impact on early/run downs helped create more 3rd and long situations, leading to quicker and more change of possessions.  Hopefully he’s the new Hurts, if we trash him enough he’ll figure it out.

That’s my question.  How much does Jordan Davis give you that Kenneth Grant, Cam Jackson, or Deone Walker can’t?  They’re all 340+ lbs and would prospect to be really good run stuffers at a fraction of the cost.

In other words — at this point, is Jordan Davis unique or replaceable?

I think Grant, specifically creeps into 1st round talk.  Jackson and Grant go mid 2nd at the latest.  So the cost is actually astronomical if you’re looking at an early pick to replace the inconsistent top 15 pick.  All in all i really like grant, but it’s hard to judge him considering the DL he played on.

I'm a broken record about my solution to this subject - but the powers that be seem to hate the shove but enjoy scrums in the open field, so yeah what you laid out makes sense.
