Given that 30 teams passed on him, there's a real chance he's a 1 contract player.

Passed on him is a bit too harsh. If there was no other alternative other than him then they would’ve passed on him but the reality is they just chose a different alternative at that particular moment. Was pick number 33 a one contract player?

Well, the definition of 'base' has changed. I'd say that the Eagles' "base" is the nickel now.

I’m not sure that I would call it nickel but rather light box. But regardless of what words are used, the reality is the same

3yr contract with some guarantees.

With all that input what is your bottom line number of starters … 11 times 2?

"Starter" isn't the 22 guys that are first on the depth chart... and its less than 22. The NFL is different and you can't afford to pay 22 players "starter" money.

So, if only 16 of them play 50% or more... those are the 'core' players, the others are role players and 3 or so of them come on and off the field as the situation dictates.

Hopefully everyone can ignore politics for this event. I grew up and saw the Redskins at the White House, the Cowboys and the Giants... among all of the other teams. I've ALWAYS wanted to see my Eagles there. I didn't care who might be President at the time. I just wanted MY Eagles at the White House. So I was really disappointed in 2018 when they didn't go.

I'm watching it now and it's great that the President mentioned the Giants losing Barkley lol. I just wish the audience had begun chanting "Thank you Giants!" lol

Yup.

The White House is the people's house. The President is just a temporary resident.

Well said. Loved hearing the fight song before they came out and all the "go birds".

The band playing "We Are the Champions" as they left that area was cringeworthy though. Terrible arrangement. Those were not the instruments that song was written for. lol

It’s a little more grey than anything these days due to age and weathering. Though I really like what they did with the place after those silly people across the pond burned it down.

Way too tall to be Jake and he’s not wearing khakis…

Those shoes have some lift on them, and I think the angle is making him look taller than normal.

I can’t make an argument for the lack of khakis though.

Look forward to no politics in here again. Any comment about it is politics fyi.

Which Steven King novel isn't politics if IT is?

There’s only like 20 players there. It would be easier to list who’s there than who’s not.

As much as I don't like politics in the blog, it's still not as bad as people bishing about Fing jersey numbers. I'd rather hear RTKs solution to peace in the Middle East or EagleVAs explanation of gravity than any of you dorks do a deep dive into the implications of a WR wearing #43.

Matthew Golden is going to wear #22. He’s an automatic bust for Green Bay.

That's a different matter. You pay big money to impact players.

Mattwill and I were talking in the context of Howie's remarks that he's looking for "starters" in the later rounds, you don't find a lot of impact players after the 2nd round, you do find a lot of starters and role players who play significant roles.

Davis is sui generis, while he doesn't play a lot of snaps, he's the key to the base defense. Because he requires double teams, it keeps the LBs clean and allow the safeties to play deep.

This allows Fangio to stop the run without exposing the defense to big plays off play action.

You could replace him in that role with Carter, but then that would make Carter less effective on passing downs b/c of the effort required to anchor against double teams against the run.

Howie and I are using the words differently then. Starter, by origin of the word, would only be the 22 players for the first play of the game. Such a silly way to focus on things.

Davis is overrated for what he does. A 2 gap NT doesn't command huge money in the NFL. How do I know? The Eagles found one on the street that outplayed Davis as a rookie. Linval Joseph was on the street, made about $2M and was more effective.

I'm very happy to have a guy like Davis to play his role. I am not interested in overpaying for that role.

Exactly. And people will have personal feelings, but at the end of the day that's my favorite team, regardless of who went or didn't go. Doesn't change that.

There is merit to what you are saying but I hope you’re not implying that there is an objective snap % number to be considered a starter that doesn’t account for position.

Playing 60% of snaps on the D-line is not the same as playing 60% at Corner or LB.

Not really... but at the same time, there is a minimum needed. But, a rotational player, where that player only plays a specific role but can't do other things isn't worth the same investment as one who does.

5 DBs are 5 DBs. That's always been nickel.

#43 would be an outrage, but #42... that's an homage to a great player!!!
