I see Tommi Hill is going to Minnesota on a rookie tryout. Yikes. I asked a guy I know close to the program and he said all he knew was that teams were worried about his medicals.

Still surprised at how little Eagles did at OCB. Have to think a move is coming

Would have been hilarious when Lane presented the 47 jersey if Trump hadn’t declined say he was hoping for better than an Uzomah jersey.

I actually think Howie has a thing for Adoree Jackson so he thinks they have a solid backup plan but I have less confidence in that and still feel they need another option at OCB regardless

Yeah im not a fan of Adoree Jackson.

I more concerned with WR depth than I am CB depth.

I used to be but he’s been not good for a few years and while he’ll be surrounded by better players that usually doesn’t reverse with age

The last pick had 9 forced fumbles ... 3 in each of the last 3 years. I like those type of defensive players.

APR is going to be a fun player to track the progress of.

Jackson is a back up and quite possibly CB5. Coop playing outside is a real possibility should the need arise. And look at all the "Defensive Backs” lined up to back up DeJean’s position. I’d be surprised if the Eagles carry more than 10 players total in the defensive backfield. That’s four CBs, three "Defensive Backs” and three Ss. (DBs play the Nickel/S hybrid but also have emergency skills that could play outside corner or S.

I’m afraid to see the person that doesn’t have to get out of the damn way when Clint Hurtt is around.

Speaking of getting out of the way, I apparently can’t help but be a contrarian. I watched two in-flight movies on the way home over the weekend — both were Marvel films (which I’m not a big fan of) — Logan and Kraven the Hunter.

I watched Kraven first and Logan some time later. Even though Logan had Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, I thought the movie itself was lousy. The "nefarious government program” plot line is so tired and worn out, and I didn’t get into the children angle one bit. They also should have given both main characters a much better send off than they got. Even Patrick Stewart couldn’t do anything with the terrible script he was handed. The story arc where that family got completely wiped out was comedically terrible writing.

Kraven was also very badly written, but the characters were at least a bit entertaining. I liked the Rhino character and, even though Russell Crowe wasn’t very believable as a Russian, he’s still Russell Crowe and brought something to the part. Never heard of the guy who played The Hunter but thought he was pretty decent. The special effects were bad enough to be comical, which should be the point of a comic book-inspired movie.

When I checked out the critical reception later on, of course most viewers hated Kraven and loved Logan. I guess I’m far away from the typical movie goer.

Even more Mukuba propaganda.

Its kinda nice that only people in the blog werent very high on Mukuba. Everything else from people who know football has been glowingly positive.

I think Mukuba is going to make the 2 or 3 of us who had him as S2 in this class very proud. And good for the people who werent really in on him- theyre in for a very fun surprise!

He’s very fluid in his movement, even pre snap.

Shawn Syed was pretty positive about him pre draft. Even said he would be perfect for Fangio’s defense.

I think you can pencil him in next to Blankenship.

For the purposes of discussion, it appears that what you were saying is that for example Reed Blankenship is not a starter. Am I understanding you correctly?

Not exactly. He's a vital piece. So, he's where you'd want to really consider how much you spend. He's a starter, because he played so many snaps. So, deciding what to do with him really gets harder. With a guy like Williams, its easy to choose not to resign him to a market setting contract, because he's a role player. So, while he's valuable, his cost would exceed his value as he didn't even play 50% of the snaps. Blankenship, while not one of the very best safeties in the NFL, played nearly 80% of the snaps and would have played more if the last game mattered and the game against Dallas before that was closer. He was taken out for those games because of his value. Williams, on the other hand, didn't get the Giants game off. So, the cost for Blankenship is a tricky scenario. They showed their assigned value on CJGJ... he played as many snaps as Blankenship, but they decided his cost wasn't his value... so he's gone. You zero'd in on one of the guys that would definitely fit the grey area. We'll see what the Eagles think of him pretty soon.

The reality that some of the rotation is done in order to keep the players fresh doesn’t seem to figure into your discussion so far.

For example, when the Eagles have had three headed monsters as their running back, Blough and Ajayi and Clement for example in Super Bowl 52 or Buckhalter and Westbrook and Staley. That decision wasn’t made because the players couldn’t do something it was made for other reasons.

How does that kind of tactical decision factor into your thinking?

You don't overpay for those guys. They were a committee, in part, because they weren't capable of handing the full workload. None of those guys, including Westbrook, as much as it pains me to say it, was worth top RB money. We see with Barkley a very different situation. He played nearly 70% of the snaps this past year, because taking him off the field hurt the team. The alternatives were no where near as good. He'll likely get less snaps this year coming up to keep him fresh for the playoffs. But even so, he'll still be well over that 50% mark of any games he plays in.

For the purposes of discussion, hasn’t the DeJean role been called The Rover in the past?

The Rover was a strong safety/LB hybrid. Dejean is a slot CB... that's why he was manned up on the likes of Chase this past year... and won that matchup. Teams scheme up using a guy like Chase in the role we saw on that 4th down stop against the Bengals because if he's lined up against a LB or SS, they generally can't keep up with the pre-snap motion and get caught in the wash. DeJean mirrored his motion perfectly and was clear of the traffic in order to make the play. He's not a 'Rover' by any means. He a CB who tackles like a safety. But in terms of his ability... he's all CB.

Or, as the song would go, "Cooper DeJean is not a safety. He's a CB that will lock up your number 1... DeJean is CB1." Here he doesn't have to be CB1, and so he can be used in a more unique role in the slot as the NCB, but has the ability to tackle like a LB. But he's 100% CB. Ultimately, he's a unicorn, and putting him on the field was really the special sauce that made the Eagles' D work the way it did.

A non political angle...

Did any of the high profile former Eagles (Sweat/Milton Williams/etc) go? Probably the first of at least a few opportunities they'll have to reunite with the SB roster.

I thought I saw Becton there.

???? I don’t remember anyone negative on Mukuba predraft. Some that didn’t really post before the draft opined as to one different choice at S and some opined on preferring a different player at a different position, which is kind of normal. The most negative thing I saw was comments on his size, post draft.

A huge value for Reed is that he seems to be the backfield coordinator and key to their improved communication.

Well explained.

The Barkley example is an outlier for two reasons. (1) he is way beyond starter level. He is HOF level. (2) even with that he only played 69% of the snaps (approximately 73% of 16 game snaps)

Compare (2) to other Offensive player percentages 81, 92, 86, 81. Heck even Grant Calcaterra had 66%.
