Eh, the 2 biggest misses were Wentz and Huff, and he was able to get a chunk of the guaranteed money moved in both cases. The use of annual, guaranteed option bonuses as opposed to massive signing bonuses makes dumping $$ through trades possible. Dak's contract is $240mm, and $80mm was a singing bonus (25%). Jalen's singing bonus was under $24mm on $255mm, or less than 10%. So we can trade Jalen and get someone to pick up his unpaid guarantees (like we did with Wentz), and that never hits our cap.

It's not even the misses, but also not being able to cut vets with too much $$$ already guaranteed. Alshon was a prime example.

In theory it works great. But players age, they get injured, so you open yourself up to a lot of risk that can wipe out those gains.

Forever a legend for taking the bullet and getting flattened for paving the way for Patrick Robinson on his pick 6.

Our Oldest Dlineman is 27, wow

Lock up a few of the guys long term next offseason and we’ll have a quality DLine until 2030

FWIW the Lions did draft Tate Ratledge in the 2nd round and Miles Frazier in the 5th round

The inability of some of the old timers in here to recognize a joke/sarcasm is astounding to me lol

There's a lot of potential there but, unless I'm mistaken, neither one has ever played center. I assume one of them will play RG since Zeitler left and the other at center. Two rookies in the middle of the line? They have the tools but that's a big ask.

Yeah, they likely knew this was coming, and that he waited until June 1 for the cap reasons.

Wentz contract was really only bad because of the injury and then wanting to leave

It would have been called a deal if the knee didn't happen and then his brain didn't get scrambled

Every time I re-watch that game I am shocked that he dropped that pick that would have ended it before the failed Hail Mary attempt - could have saved us all a ton of anxiety leading up to that last play.

I wouldn’t call Wentz a miss. Wentz was an injury casualty.

$80mm bonus for singing? Must have a helluva voice.

I think it’s safe to call him a miss…I don’t remember the exact timeline, but there was rumblings pretty early of his issues taking to coaching. At the end of the day, Wentz was a very harsh lesson for Howie on how not to set your franchise QB up for success. Also, toward the end of Dougie P’s tenure after 2? years of ‘trying to run it back with he boys’ things seemed a little toxic. The franchise in general had a pretty hard reset with Siri coming in.

That Clowney hit was the final nail in his careers coffin. He recovered well from the knee, seemed to have some lingering mechanics issue after the back, but that concussion being his 3rd consecutive season ending injury really scrambled his brain literally and figuratively.

You are overthinking this. Look at these 4-year numbers and tell me that that player was a miss.

They made their big post June 1 signing

More big body rookie clay for Stoutland to mold. 6’5” and 321 pounds.

Overview

A four-year starter with good size and strength, Tate’s injuries over the last three years have stolen some shine from his play. He’s better in pass protection than he is as a run blocker. He plays with elevated pads that rob him of drive power, but he can play on the move and has a good feel for angles to execute in space. He’s technically sound in pass pro with a sturdy base, a crisp punch and the ability to keep rushers in front of him, but he has occasional issues with long twists and blitzers. There is some favorable tape for Tate, but his injury history makes projecting his pro potential a bit murky.

Strengths

— Moves well enough for lead pulls and outside-zone blocks.

— Gives good effort to swing hips into place and seal lateral blocks.

— Decent timing getting from secure to climb on combo blocks.

— Delivers a firm punch with head back and a hearty anchor.

— Uses hands to reset his placement and leverage when beaten.

— Competes to stay mirrored to rushers and displays good recovery talent.

Weaknesses

—Allows opponents to play under his pads at the point of contact.

— Inconsistent keeping run blocks centered and opponents in front of him.

— Below-average explosiveness fitting into his run block.

— Loses track of A-gap help he could be providing.

— Falls prey to punch-and-pull, causing him to fall forward.

— Missed time because of injuries in each of the past three seasons.

Also, I ordered this a little over a month ago. Will probably be the last SB59 thing I order for a while, but I'll put a link here in case anyone wants it. I ordered it more for collecting purposes than anything. I got the ESPN mag and the SI ones so I figured I'd get this one too..

I’ll probably order Berman’s book, even though his first one was pretty lame.

Remember in the Super Bowl, with only 5 minutes left in the game we dominated 40-6 and they scored garbage time points after Siri already got the Gatorade bath?

That was awesome (Unless you're Fangio 😆)

The real score.jpg

Not exactly an apples to apples comparison but interesting nonetheless.

It is relative to his draft status. We paid like 5 1st and 2nd round picks to get him.

We did not get close to the expected return for such an investment, aside from butterfly effect stuff that got Foles and Hurts rings.

Carson was like 5 premium draft picks all busting at the exact same time
