Copper Standard

Missing camp time is bad for any rookie but given that Tyler Shough is competing for the starter role in Saints I can't imagine him actually holding out. Once the first domino drops I bet the rest will follow suite shortly. It's annoying but I'm not actually worried.

His situation is going to be the most interesting going forward. Final year of his deal. He was great last year. To everyone's surprise his absence wasn't that big of a loss. Drafting Campbell in the first then. Dean by all accounts won't return until later in the season.

What happens? I think the hope is that Campbell can fill in but eventually transition into some sort of hybrid edge rusher and hopefully really shine there. Then Dean comes back. You would think they will almost surely be able to get him on a cheap 1 year prove it deal for a comeback but would he still if Campbell stays at LB? I think the play would try to get Dean on a cheap multi-year deal. Give him security and time to really get back form his injury and stay on a team with his college buddies. Give you the chance to be able to really move Jihaad around and and maybe let Dean take over when Baun's contract runs out. Although it would be awesome if Baun turns into one of these guys that just dominates into their mid-30s and stays with the team. But who knows.

The whole Dean contract situation is one of the most intriguing and under talked about storylines heading into this year.

It will be interesting for sure. The idea of Dean taking over for Baun is intriguing for sure as Dean is still only 24 until late December. He's still a pup. For as good as Baun was last year, he needs to prove it wasn't a flash in the pan. Based on the majority of reports we see, Baun could be even better this year, but we still have no idea. I'm not sure how his contract is built either. Is he here on a true 3-year deal or is there an out if he drops off or gets hurt? Even if Baun plays out all 3 years, Dean is still just 27 when that happens. Is he willing to play a backup role for 3 years? That's a huge ask. Or mabye Baun and Dean can the 2 true LB and Campbell is a swiss army knife kind of guy and all 3 are on the field. Of course, none of this is happens if Dean can't come back at 100%.

Don't forget Smael Mondon and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. I think Mondon could be a steal.

Execs, coaches, scouts rank NFL's top 10 offensive tackles for 2025

Who are the NFL's best offensive tackles? Execs, coaches...

Who are the best offensive tackles in the NFL? We asked execs, coaches and scouts to rank their top 10 in our annual summer series.

3. Lane Johnson, Philadelphia Eagles

Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: 10
Age: 35 | Last year's ranking: 4

There has been no tangible drop-off in Johnson's play after 12 seasons. In fact, Johnson ranked among the best -- again -- in run block win rate at 80.2.

He has proved durable in his early-to-mid-30s, logging at least 15 games in each of the last three seasons on his way to consecutive Pro Bowls. These factors helped Johnson narrowly edge Trent Williams for the third spot.

"He's kind of the gold standard now -- technique, smarts and probably the most instinctive of them all," an NFL personnel director said. "He's a perfect product of that system. He's dealt with a lot, from mental health to injuries, and he's come out of it better than ever."

Just about everyone lauds Johnson's overall game, from his second-level mauling in the run game to his footwork and discipline in the pass game.

5. Jordan Mailata, Philadelphia Eagles

Highest ranking: 1 | Lowest ranking: Unranked
Age: 28 | Last year's ranking: 7

Mailata is well known for his rare combination of size (6-foot-8, 365 pounds), agility and violence at the line of scrimmage. Now, he's known for other things - such as a Super Bowl champion and a second team All-Pro.

Mailata allowed 1.5 sacks in 2024 per Next Gen Stats, tied for the fewest among tackles with at least 350 pass-blocking snaps. Couple that with his running game prowess and the Eagles have a long-term solution at left tackle.

One NFC exec called Mailata's ascension "astronomical."

"One of the most unique players in the NFL," a veteran NFL personnel executive said. "Has really improved year-to-year. Only thing that holds him back from the others at the top is they probably have better instincts."

A different personnel executive man with an NFC team loves Mailata's game, but kept him out of the top four because he's "still improving and becoming more sound, but there's still enough ways to get him off balance."

Campbell as a floating weapon is intriguing. A healthy Dean is icing on the cake if he can come back and produce this season. Baun holds it down. Mondon will be an impact player too.

This D has amazing potential.

Might be busting my nut here, but I think the Eagles run it back in 2025.

Great time to be an Eagles fan!

If Campbell is a floating weapon in this defense. That makes two floating weapons, Campbell and DeJean

Makes it awfully difficult for the qb to key on defenders in any read scheme

I’m shocked that the Saints haven’t tried to trade for McKee. Maybe they have.

Two floaters... but we need an anchor. Who's the anchor? 🥸

To all practical purposes Baun fits the floating weapon mold as well.

The two Safeties on the top and the light box in the trenches

Oh no! A light box with two floaters... this whole team might just float away if the wind picks up.

Why Jalen Carter...isn't it obvious? Even so, the players will make last second shifts, etc. to further stress their opponents. The White Gorilla will be another brick in the wall also.

On a PC, there's a little box in the bottom right corner... just size it to whatever size you want.

My team since the early 90s long before they got good.

Btw - Did I see Howie last night in the box with Brady? It flew by so fast I couldn’t tell.

I'm not sure. I turned it on after half time. Didn't notice
