Well that guy's name is "Optimistic Raider", so he's at least a little self-aware. He might need to switch it to "Delusionally Optimistic Raider", but frankly, its possible given that horrific roster that Booker is actually their best option now. 🤷‍♂️

Yea, I'd stick with the guy who got them 10 sacks, 93 tackles and 19 QB hits the last two years over a guy who was on the PS in 2024

Just another lower level Beat that noticed my posts about Cooper. I trust Bo’s evaluations right up there with ESP and BLG.

The exhibition games will expose some players. I won't get excited over someone like Cooper right now.

Trading Booker pretty much says Hall beat him out and off last season's film they don't see him as an adequate backup at NT.

Which suggests Howie will be looking for more of a NT type than another lanky 3-4 DE type the next few weeks.

Bennett another fast DB, Howie has been stockpiling them, which suggests this is what Fangio wants, since they play mostly zone, great hips less valuable than vision and great burst to the ball.

Mitchell 4.33, Ringo 4.36, Jackson 4.38, Bennett 4.30, Ricks 4.60, Castro-Fields 4.38, Woods 4.40. Nickerson 4.32. One is not like the others. ☹️

PHLY takes from today

-Mukuba unlikely to be week 1 starter given him missing time.

-Zach thinks DeJean's future very well could at safety, he thinks he looks so great and natural there. And he's 100% going to be safety in base as he's played there all preseason.

-Cooks continues to impress. As I mentioned before Cooper as well. Cooper had a nice return today, flashed speed on it.

-They think Shipley leads at RB2

-They think Bennett was acquired at least in part because the Eagles have some concerns about CB2. More that no one has separated from the pack.

-Ojulari flashed a bit today

-Mondon has impressed

-Nolan Smith had a really nice rep in coverage today

-Hurts' best day in a while here at camp, looked sharp as did the offense.

-Thinks Steen at RG could be the most vulnerable they've been there in a few years.

-Ojomo continues to dominate. Ty Robinson continues to look good and will feature a big role as a rookie.

So, is DeJean playing S in more than just base defense looks? Because if not, these guys are overreacting to seeing him line up there in looks that the eagles will use about 5% of the time in real games.

On the other hand, it could indicate that they arent pleased with Mukuba in which case, DeJean would have to stay at safety long term, THUS needing another CB, and the trade for Jackson.

My hope is that DeJean is just the base safety, and Mukuba is the future starter at safety, once he gets caught up in the defense which may be a few weeks in to the season given all the time he has missed so far.

They took Mukuba with their 2nd overall and I have to think with the approval of Fangio(they got his approval for Campbell, so I'd assume he's more involved on draft picks than FA signings because the latter factors in budget). So I'd assume once he's up to speed he'll be a starting safety.

Yes.

It just sounds so ridiculous to read

It's okay matt, you can admit you were wrong on your weird hostile reaction to me saying Roseman was most likely to do at least one trade either in August and/or at the deadline.

It’s okay RTK. You read/heard our discussion about trading draft picks with your own personal biases. In reality Howie hasn’t YET made the kind of trade we discussed. That doesn’t mean he will or won’t, but I stand by my stated opinion that Howie won’t trade a draft pick for a starter.

If they don't extend Blankenship and Mac McWilliams looks good in whatever opportunities he gets then DeJean can absolutely be thought of as a full time safety heading into next season.

My guess is that Bennett is going to end up replacing Jackson.

Ringo narrowly wins the starting job early in the season, but the competition continues and a real chance that Ringo is just marginal enough to leave the door open all year.

Would not shock me to see Bennett ultimately win out.

I'm not talking about danger. I'm talking about recognizability. Tarantulas are the most recognizable spider. So to call someone that as a nickname then show a video of another spider is silly. Like calling him The Cobra then showing any other snake. Or The Clydesdale and showing any other horse. Or The Hammerhead Shark and showing any other shark. If you want other examples.

I don't really care. It's just kinda dumb by the Phillies imo. Show a tarantula if that's what you're going for.

It’s like being called Paco when you are clearly a white guy from south NEPA.

Why is that ridiculous? Especially if they play three safety sets. Ronnie Lott came into the league as a corner, made all Pro, and Walsh promptly switched him to safety.

Because DeJean is too good where he is to move him. And the eagles drafted a guy who projects to start at safety in Mukuba. And Fangio pointed out that the base defense is used minimally as if to tell the media, slow down this is nothing.

And yet, Zach (Berman I am guessing?) is concluding that DeJean may be the full time starter at safety.

Theres really no reason to think that.

Mukuba is 1000% a "Fangio guy.” Not even a question. He’s not gonna hand him the job, but he really wants Mukuba to win it.

You're not thinking clearly. Walsh was asked why he moved Lott. He covers half the field at corner, Bill, why move him? To which Walsh replied, so he can cover the whole field.

DeJean makes more sense at safety with his skill set.

I don't see an Allpro CB, but I do see an All pro safety.

His combination of speed, size, vision and anticipation are more valuable inside where you can't just run a WR down the sideline and take him out of the play.

At safety, he's in on practically every play.

And with DeJean at NCB they're basically running a 3 safety set.

Eagles never have an issue "redshirting" a player if someone else is more NFL ready.

Mukuba and McWilliams give them options, with a chess piece like DeJean who can play all three inside spots.

The wildcard is Brown, he's getting a good shot at winning PT if not a starting spot, up to him to seize the opportunity.

Watch to see if Ricks gets reps inside, with the addition of Bennett. Seems they like fast CBs on the outside.

I am excited about Darius Cooper. He was a phenomenon at Division 1 (playoff level) and an All American. Good size and speed. Not sure about the route tree, but frankly, I think he may be the sixth or seventh WR and a PS candidate. More accomplished than Morin. We have to look at the roster as the Active Roster plus the PS and Howie always has a couple prospects on the PS.

I agree Howie is stockpiling speed at CB but then there is Ricks. How do you explain Ricks?

Curious about Joe Evans. 337 DT that put up 28 reps on the bench his pro day. Finished at UTSA but spent the prior three years at LSU. Another potential PS candidate which would be an ideal place to put a NT. I don’t see Young, Ojomo, Hall, Robinson as NTs even though Booker was only around 10 pounds heavier at most. But do the Eagles really need an active roster back up NT? Now they might get someone better from waivers but better tends to stick with their own team PS rather than a new team at cutdowns. Curious about Sykes at DT too. Undersized but speedy. Are you projecting Hall as a NT?

Theres really no reason to think that.

I did not mean to be insulting. Think of DeJean’s two big splash plays - running down Chase in motion to his left and his tackle of Henry to his right. Those were plays a great safety makes. He’s damn good in coverage but Mitchell is better but Mitchell is a sticky defender, not a read and react run support guy, although he’s good at those things. Slot corner is something of a hybrid safety. DeJean has shown he can play it but I think he’s shown he can do more. The only thing that will keep him from full time safety is if we don’t have another guy who can play slot corner. If that’s the case, we’re in full agreement.
