I'd much rather have Za'Darius Smith than Simmons btw. If Howie had to choose one. I think he has more left in the tank and would help more.

I'm starting to think you are Za'Darius Smith

What a group of former Steeler WRs who have been traded away…

- Antonio Brown

- Martavis Bryant

- Chase Claypool

- Diontae Johnson

- George Pickens

The head case that was Brown. That was such a nose dive of a career lol

Hurts. He is a better QB in the playoffs, and so far the best QB in both of his SB games. It's not really close compared to Allen and Burrow.

Hurts wasn't part of the choices...

Agree to disagree on the rest

Are these cap numbers updated (obviously minus rookies)? We have ~25M in cap?

Interesting because people said after they didn't draft a TE, Goedert had the leverage and would demand more money. Instead - according to the tweet - he "selflessly restructured to try running it back."

Smitty could have taken more money elsewhere, other players too. Players want to play here and win.

Take that DG haters😁, I expect that this is just a void year add-on to spread out costs (as we're are unlikely able to afford the extension that he imagines) but we will see...

Just adding void years would only make sense if there was an extension. He already has four void years on his current contract. So if he leaves next year, additional void years do nothing for the spread. Either he agreed to a rework of his roster bonus in return for free agency next year for certain (see Sweat renegotiation last year) or he took an extension that assures Howie of spreading the remaining bonus payments.

Fair

Tend to think this is a Josh sweat rework deal situation. Don’t think the eagles want to get into a type of extension he and his agent believe he deserves especially with having to pay some younger guys coming up. He’ll be 31 at the end of next year so he has a chance to test free agency if he has a good year and have his last big contract.

Sounds like a Sweat deal.

My guess is he reduced the option bonus by $2-4mm, and the Eagles guaranteed it and maybe even paid it now (or will before it was previously due, which was week 1). If the option bonus got dropped from $14mm to $10mm, then it saves 800k in 2025 cap but reduces his dead cap hit by 3.2mm after he is gone. I wouldn't be shocked to see a total BS year added for 2026 that allows for a post June 1 release to spread the hit, but that would mean no comp pick. So it will be a question of what does Howie want more -- 2026 cap flexibility or a comp pick in 2027?

EDIT: Now see it is confirmed $4mm cut to the option bonus. Good deal for both sides.

At this point in the offseason, how many teams have both a need and the cap room for a $10M+ TE with injury concerns? In fact the teams that drafted TE early may be looking to move their incumbents. The market must have softened.

There’s more smoke about Justin Simmons wanting to be in Philly but I just don’t see how it happens at this point. Would they really want to put a roadblock in front of Mukuba and push Sidney Brown to 4th/possibly off the team?

Nah. No interest

Howie needs to trademark this type of deal. Think of all the cap nerds that would load up on that merch.

If Mukuba and Brown are both terrible in OTAs or camp, they can always pivot to Simmons. Doesn't feel like there's a robust market for him.

Sure, spread the roster bonus - that’s the ticket.

We won't know until the details of the deal come out.

My thoughts exactly. He also didn’t sign with Atlanta til mid August last year. I’m guessing if brown and Mukuba are struggling in camps and preseason then Simmons gets a call

If he signs elsewhere in 2026 for $10M+ AAV, we should expect a day 3 comp pick in 2027. Correct?

Lot of moving pieces, but that is directionally correct. Becton signed a 2 year, $20mm deal and that should net us a 5th.

Well, if we are taking the tweet in its totality at face value, he was informed of the draft day trades... so the leverage was clearly on the Eagles' side to send him to Cleveland (for example, other dead end spots exist)! And when facing that, he chose to take less money to stay here and maximizing his earning potential on his next deal. Playing a year in a dead end spot and getting injured on top of it would pretty much tank his value for the next deal.

True - but I think Mukuba has a nice floor in this scheme, so Simmons isn’t a must.

I said he had the leverage but never said "demand more money”. I said he had the leverage to play on his current deal the way it is. Given that he didn’t take much of a pay cut to stay, he used some of it.
