Why they didn’t pay Slay for one more year is a mystery to me.

The Eagles almost never look good in preseason. This is a whole new level of team.

That is why I’m predicting 5-0 for their first five games. Their heads are absolutely in the right place.

I’m not as worried about backup edge. Starters are solid. You can move guys around on line

Starting outside CB is bigger issue. Hopefully Bennett can help

I’m not sure Hunt is "solid” yet. Maybe he’s the steal of the draft but I need to see how he does in an expanded role. Likewise with Smith, I’m worried how he holds up health wise considering as a rotational player he got banged up a lot.

I’d say EDGE has a lot more volatility than CB.

My opinion on the roster hasn’t changed much. Their strategy of putting rookie contract guys with talent against beatable vets was never gonna be 100%.

  • CB2 is the biggest concern and it’s not close. Ringo can’t be trusted. Jackson might end up being ok, but he’s far from a safe bet. Who knows on the new guy. Could be a disaster.

  • I’m not worried about safety - Mukuba will be fine.

  • Steen will be good enough.

  • Hunt will be fine. Depth at edge is a major concern. Even if they make due with 3 guys again like last year (though I don’t know who’d even be edge 3), they’re so vulnerable to injury.

On another note, I was pleasantly surprised by Cooper and Dillon tonight. Cooper seems to have actual WR skills unlike most of the backups, and Dillon looks way more legit than I expected.

If the Eagles wanted another older vet I think they'd have just signed Jaire Alexander. And maybe they should have. But if they passed on him I can't see them signing Samuel or Rasul or anyone else.

I think that was true at the time. However if ringo, Jackson and Bennett aren’t there at the end of preseason i think they’d look to add at that point. Wanted ringo to get those reps all summer and TC but if they dont think he’s good enough at that point i think they’d add. I also think they knew someone like rasul would still be out there as he’s waiting for the right situation and likely not have to go through TC and preseason.

One thing I noticed during the game is that the edge rushers were dropping into coverage a lot, both in five-man and four-man fronts.

This makes me think that the team will be dropping Smith and Hunt into coverage a lot during the season, and also that the backup edge rushers are being judged on how well they can do it.

It makes sense given that Campbell, Baun and Dean are all very good at rushing the passer from the LB spot.

Vic is very good at generating unblocked pressure, and I think this year we will see a lot more of it than last year, when he was somewhat constrained by Graham, Huff and Sweat being on the field a lot early in the season.

I think they’d wait to make a move for pass rushing depth over corner. Imo i think they believe someone from the group they signed will step up and they could also use Campbell to rush the pass rusher at times as well. I think corner they gave ringo and Jackson all the reps all offseason and if they get to end of the preseason and don’t believe in either (and Bennett isn’t the answer either) then i think that is a bigger pressing issue. Especially cause first 4 weeks you got cowboys with lamb and Pickens, KC with rice, worthy and brown, rams with Adams and nacua and Tampa with Evans, godwin and Egbuka

Some quick thoughts about tonight's game from someone who was there. Others may have already commented similarly. The game was better (a lot better) than most preseason openers.

QB -- Tanner McKee once again looked great. Every throw he makes seems to be perfectly timed and on target. In my mind, this guy is an NFL starter. I think he can do "Nick Foles things" for us if he's ever forced to play. And that's a good thing. Dorian Thompson-Robinson was sort of up and down but he did have one "wow" throw which demonstrated more arm strength than I had imagined. Kyle McCord was "meh". Not a disaster but he didn't really impress. There was a terrible interception and a misfire on a deep throw to an open receiver. McKee was light years better in his debut two years ago.

RB -- I thought they all showed something. Will Shipley had a big run. A.J. Dillon had some powerful runs and looked the part. The backups flashed a bit, mostly bouncing plays to the outside when the middle was clogged.

TE -- I got nothing. Grant Calcaterra didn't come down with a tough catch. Other dudes were there but didn't make an impression.

WR -- Amazingly it was Johnny Wilson who made the splash plays. Shocking, I know. He made three "tough" grabs but then reverted to his usual form later in the game by dropping one. Still, he would have to be considered to have had a good game. Ainias Smith caught a TD and had a big punt return. I guess he did well. Darius Cooper (is that his name?) made a few plays and looked interesting enough.

OL -- I'm not sure any of them stood out, at least in person. Maybe Matt Pryor played well. Maybe. And maybe Kendall too, although I'm not sure. As far as the other guys who are battling for bottom roster spots are concerned, I dunno. None of them caught my eye. There were a lot of penalties.

DL -- Ty Robinson definitely impressed. Good to see. Some dude named Sykes made a couple of plays. I don't think any of the notable edge guys did much to stand out.

LB -- Jihaad Campbell only played a little bit but he definitely flashed. His burst is evident. He also dropped an interception that he should have had. Patrick Johnson (is he a LB or DL?) had perhaps the defensive play of the game, tipping and intercepting a short pass.

DB -- Neither of the corners who are presumably battling for a starting spot distinguished themselves. Adoree Jackson got beat a few times, as did Kelee Ringo, who inexplicably whiffed on a tackle (he's usually a good tackler) which led to a touchdown. Bennett didn't play. Overall I would say this was a "miss".

ST -- Jake Elliott missed a long field goal but it was negated because of a defensive penalty. He had a good game overall, including several kickoffs which took the returner close to the goal line. Mann looked fine punting. The coverage units weren't particularly good. The emergency snapper looked pretty good to me in warmup drills. In the game, he was mostly good but there was one kick snap that was a bit high. And there was another snap -- I believe it was a punt -- that was a bit low.

Just happy that no one seemed to get hurt.

On the same exact day before the season even starts? It is kind of a coincidence. Would be much different if we said eventually they’re going to get injured. But on the exact same day in august? That is a coincidence.

Lol i know, im just being pissy because i didnt care for that trade when it happened but cjgj is a punk ass anyways so to hell with him lol

Cooper will switch to 8, 13, or 18 come roster cuts. One or more of those guys won’t be here.

It sucks to see that Jackson and Ringo played poorly. However, Cooper DeJean, Mac McWilliams and Jokorian Bennett all factor in here too. If McWilliams shows he can be the slot, DeJean could be CB2 tomorrow. We all love DeJean as the nickel, but he's always said he's an outside CB. I have no doubt he would be just as good on the perimeter. Bennett is a starting level CB in the NFL. You have to think his eyes are wide open right now ater watching last nights game. He has to be chomping at the bit to get on the practice field to show what he's got.

I've been so high on Ringo since they drafted him, but last night was pretty demoralizing for him. He looked slow, he looked unathletic and worst of all, he looked like he didn't want to be out there. The last part worries me the most. Last year he was a ST demon. If he loses CB2, is he going to play ST with the same tenacity and effort, or does it kill his confidence and willingness to go all out as a backup? I don't want to give up on him yet, but nothing he did last night showed me he should be on the roster, let alone starting opposite of Mitchell.

I don't think Howie panics and signs a street FA. They moved a great depth peice at DT who was loved in the locker room to get Bennett in here. He's going to be given every chance to prove he's the guy before they make a move.

WR is getting interesting now too. I was hoping Terrace Marshall would take WR4 and run, but his knee injury really killed his chances. Elijah Cooks seems to have suffered a serious injury too. Those two were dark horses to make the roster and both seem to be IR candidates now.

Something I would conisder if Ainias Smith, Johnny Wilson and Darius Cooper contnue to impress is trading Jahan Dotson. They could always keep 6 WR, but Dotson isn't here for the long haul. I can't see them giving him a market value deal and I think some team will see him as a WR2. He offers more experience than the others and Jalen Hurts really likes him and has been building chemistry wtih him too, but his contract is very tradeable. Just have to wonder what he would bring back.

The Eagles traded a 3rd for Dotson. could they get the same in return? Would you move him for a 3rd or are the 20 catches or so he might have worth it?

I mean I would like to trade McKee just to do him a favor as HE should be a starter in this league.

Im perfectly fine with DTR as our backup.

There is no way in hell that DTR will or should be our primary backup QB, he actually should not end up on the roster unless it's the practice squad.

Hurts

McKee

McCord

DTR

That's the depth chart going in and only if they keep him on PS. I would not.

You and your madden trades….

Depth is necessary. AJ and smitty could miss games. Dotson and Cooper looked good. Wilson can be the fifth if they actually like Him. Instill

Think hes a stiff. Smith is not and nfl player

Count me in as not impressed with Anias.

Even his big return was pretty bad. He completely misjudged the ball and had to make a circus catch to even secure the ball. Then he had absolutely no juice on the return lol. It was all set up by good blocking, nothing that he did.

I really want a return specialist that looks the part back there, and not one named Cooper Dejean.

Watching the replay now since I couldn’t watch live… somehow Ringo and Jackson were even worse than I expected, and I read every post from last night before watching the game. Yikes.

The back shoulder grab by Chase… I don’t think there’s a corner in the NFL stopping that. Everything else was a disaster.

Ringo got cooked on those comeback routes every time, and I'm definitely not sold on Jackson. I'm more concerned about CB2 than backup edge. Fangio demands a lot of snaps from his starter DL, and the LBs can supplement the pass rush. They have lots of talent on the DL, its about finding that rotation. Ojomo can play edge, Ty Robinson could also. I also really liked Gabe Hall last night and thought he played well.

CB2 is the position that's going to get picked on and attacked in the passing game. They need to be able to battle and move onto the next play. Ricks was all over the place, Castro-Fields looked decent, really hope Bennett is good but we may get a better indication this upcoming week of practice.

DAZN pulled a prime DAZN thing on that game. The first 20+ mins had no commentary on it whatsoever; sadly they restored it before the Spadaro interviews.

What's to tell after that game? Not a lot. Pre-season, a mix of starters and backups and bland/targeted scheme. Ringo definitely got his lunch money for all of high school stolen from him, but its just one game against the best WR in the league too. You can see why Hinton and Williams didn't get drafted higher. Some good stuff, but sheesh, a lot of tape watching needs to happen.

McKee looks like has something than a backup QB does. Kid has a knack for being a QB; DTR kind of doesn't.

Did the Bengals play their starting defense last night? If so, oof…
