Based on some pre-season games Greg Cooper is better, lol. He isn't the blocker Wilson is and neither is likely to factor in whatsoever in the passing game.

We shall see, T-1000. Come the dawn, we shall see.

Or, if he fits in here, maybe Howie gets him a cheap 3-year extension. AJ Brown and Jalen Hurts are best friends. Nolan Smith, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean are as close as it gets. Metchie and DeVonta Smith were roommates at Bama. How do you build a culture that stays with the team year after year? You have guys that buy in. Metchie hasn't played a down yet for the Eagles and getting way ahead of myself here, but he's going to fit in so well here.

How about Smith, Metchie, and Ruggs when he is out of prison next year replacing Dotson on the roster.

Big Bama WR squad. Might have to trade AJ. He doesnt fit in.

Did that first season accrue when Metchie was fighting off cancer (i.e., will he be an UFA after this season or a RFA?)?

He may be neither if his contract tolled.

The cost certainly explains a lot of it. I still don’t know how much value or use there is in another WR down the depth chart that doesn’t play ST’s and likely won’t have enough time to learn the playbook, grow a rapport with Hurts and be used barely at all.

But like the Dotson situation, if they have him under contract for two years rather than one, the production this year isn’t as important as the production next year.

Why in the world would you cut Johnny Wilson? He is clearly the 4th best WR on the team and brings two things to the table none of the other guys do. 1. He is a massive WR can make contested catch's. 2. He is the best blocking WR they have and for a team who runs the ball so much that is a factor.

Lol, it's not hyperbole at all if you pay attention to the team even a little bit.

But by this line of reasoning, we shouldn't expect anything from Metchie this year... and he's also a free agent at the end of the year.

But is he a Free Agent?

He was on NFI, so he is an RFA after the season. Which means he is a cheap replacement for Dotson in 2026.

Why RFA rather than a player under contract with on remaining contractual year plus a tolled year?

I think Metchie does bring some dirty work stuff, but I really don’t think Wilson will be cut, unless he’s hurt and IR’d, even though I think he should be cut. But this might just be Howie continuing the trend of buying low on former high draft picks. I think it’s something Howie is going to continue to do over and over because he probably figures eventually it will net him a stud and as long as he commits to it without having to give up good compensation, he’s going to do it. And eventually when he does get that stud who figures it out, it’ll be worth sticking to that philosophy.

Wilson may well be the TE3 just as much as he is WR 4 or WR 5 now that Metchie is here.

I looked into it more and I’m pretty sure because he was on the NFI list and it wasn’t a football injury, the year didn’t count as an accrued season.

I agree with that. The question that still hangs fire is whether he is any kind of FA after this season, or does he have to play one more year after this one to satisfy the tolled year.

He is an RFA after the season. Players on NFI only toll if it is the last year of the contract. Otherwise, the team can choose not to pay, and the player doesn’t get an accrued season. But the contract is not tolled.

Metchie will be a RFA.

No way the browns make that trade.

Thanks

I watched a Landry Locker YouTube stream (Houston 610 radio guy) I forgot that the Texans signed Christian Kirk and Justin Watson.

Their top 5 WRs were locked and Watson is a 3x SB winner in the last 5 years (Tampa in 2020) who is a guy who can be that 6th WR who makes the occasional big play.

Metchie was not making the Texans. This is an amazing move for him.

He said Metchie had a great camp (he was beating Derek Stingley on some big catches) and he leaves the Texans with his head high where Kenyon Green left with his head down.

I will send Chris McPherson an e-mail asking him.

I sent emails to OTC and Spotrac as well.

The Eagles could definitely go heavy at WR. Honestly not sure the value of a 3rd TE on this team over keeping whoever can make it to the PS at TE. Also none of the rookie OL other than Kendall will get claimed so don’t need to keep a lot of OL on 53. 3 RBs is enough as well

Pascal was the big blocking WR, not a viable slot guy. Rodgers and Becton both got 2 year deals with larger guarantees than 3.5 million. 1 year, 3.5 million is basically what they gave Becton as a reclamation project for 2024. Hell, Ojulari has a 1 year, $3mm fully guaranteed deal.

AAV is less important than guaranteed money and flexibility.

My point with Becton and Rodgers is that those two presuming starting positions are much more important to the team than whoever WR3/4 is. Both are on relatively bargain deals on other teams. IF Metchie doesn’t show much, which seems like he has an uphill battle given the overall offense and his newness to the team, I don’t think they are handing him $3.5M while there are more important resignings like Blakenship, Goedert, Dean and extensions to guys like Carter, Smith, Steen etc.

Yup. He didn’t earn an accrued season but his contract also didn’t toll, is how I understand it.

I don't see Dean coming back unless it's cheap. They may take the comp pick and go with the kids.

Dean’s injury history should be considered if they want to resign him. He played well last year, but he seems expendable under the current circumstances.

Seems completely fair. He was excellent last year but as you say until then his injury history was a bit of an issue.

I don't think AJ Brown and Hurts are 'best friends' anymore. I'll add that all this 'friendship' amongst all the players is nice, but at the same time, it can be a potential problem forming cliques within the locker room, or if they are too chummy, it could cause issues when one of them gets paid and the other is allowed to walk.

The idea of getting guys that buy into the culture makes sense. The idea that that works best all the time by going back to the same few wells is a fallacy. Cooper DeJean is very much NOT from the UGA, ALA, SEC tree... and he fit in very nicely. Same with Zach Baun. The guys we are looking for that fit the culture come from all over the college football landscape, it just takes some digging to find them. And not every player from the UGA, ALA tree is going to help. Adding Bryce Young wouldn't do much to help this team right now, even though he's a ALA guy and from all accounts very dedicated to his brand of pee-wee football. He was even born at Lankenau Hospital! But I want no part of adding him to this team.

Right. I wasn't suggesting building a team of friends, but I think you see how certain guys buy in.

Rob Manfred is actually going to blow up the MLB.
