Backup QB is a funny position, value wise. Looking past the Eagles and Dalton, just speaking generally: There’s a huge difference between not having a backup QB at the beginning of the league season before free agency and not having a backup QB right now.

For any team with playoff aspirations and no highly reliable 3rd QB…their #2 QB is worth quite a bit no matter who they are, how good they are, or what kind of prospect they are. If they aren’t confident in Dalton, it would take an extremely valuable pick to pry away McKee and set them on a search for a backup QB.

I’m only stating that they’re unwilling to trade him, because no team is giving them that high a pick for McKee right now.

They would have to really work hard to build up Tanner McKee to make him a 1st or 2nd round pick at this point. The Eagles were able to flip Sam Bradford, because he had a pedigree. He started multiple NFL games. He was a first who had a lot of hard luck injuries. They also got lucky that the Vikings lost their quarterback. Tanner doesn’t have enough good starting tape to justify giving a 1 or 2 for. Maybe they hope to try and keep the rookie on the PS, but I wonder if that works out for them.

Given that it sounds like his delivery needs an extreme makeover, he might last on the practice squad.

Yeah ... there won't be a lot of teams just dying to add a rookie project QB to their 53.

I’d be surprised if they exposed a 5th round pick to the practice squad. I guess they did with McCord, but they obviously didn’t rate him at all.

Perhaps a phantom injury. If not I expect McKee to be moved for a 3rd or 4th at some point.

They supposedly declined a second round pick from Jets for McKee. I don't think they'd carry 4 QBs into the regular season, maybe Cole Payton will sustain a persistent hangnail resulting in long term IR where his throwing game can heal. Or maybe Howie will be able to move Dalton or McKee. I'm sure Howie will figure out something.

They didn’t decline it - they wanted a second and the Jets weren’t interested.

But yeah - a hangnail or dislocated eyebrow makes sense.

That was the Ray Rhodes will not be back next year game.

Andy was coach after that year.

McMahon was an Eagle in 2005. That was definitely during the Andy Reid era.

Once again the media witnesses Andy Dalton taking reps with the 2nd string. I mean there seems to be a reason why the Eagles keep showing the media this look. I don’t see how this increases the value of of Tanner McKee for trade purposes.

It wouldn't be the first time. Obviously last year, they exposed McCord and a few years ago they exposed Clayton Thorson. Neither did anything to make the team. They also exposed other late picks that either showed potential or were considered projects like TooHill, PTW, Dylon McMahon. It's going to come down to whether or not the guy impresses the team in some way.

When it comes to McKee, I think people here hyped him up more than deserved. I like him as a backup and the Eagles probably do too. At no point was he going to bring us a high return in a trade. He's the kind up guy that has career backup written all over him, but the upside to perform well enough as an injury replacement to maybe someday get a shot. I can see the Eagles potentially giving him a short extension that pays him QB2 money.

Does it increase Dalton's value? I don't expect Howie's wheelin' dealin' instincts to be far below the surface.

Don't see the point of that either. Why even trade for Dalton just to try and flip him? I just don't get where they're going with it at this moment.

If Dalton is being forced into the 2 it's to push QB1. There's no other reason for it.

There.

That's way funner to talk about than a 4th round pick for Tanner.

Tanner was QB2 today and was in earlier camp sessions as well.

They will cont. to rotate both in the QB2 role until one is gone

If Tanner is genuinely thought of (by the organisation) as a genuine alternative to Jalen if he really struggles then he goes nowhere. But I think given the snap situation so far I think there’s a chance maybe they are open to the idea of trading him? And so they want to get Dalton ready to be the back up.

I still wouldn't take a second for Tanner.

No one will offer a 2 and I'd be surprised if anyone offered a 3. The last game of the year really hurt his value with our bozo OC.

We could probably get a 4 for him.

I wonder if they see Cole Payton as more of a Jalen substitute than McKee. McKee seems like the classic pocket Quarterback, Jalen is not and is unlikely to ever be a pocket Quarterback.

Judging from what’s coming out of TC about Dalton I don’t think so. He’s throwing an INT like every other day.

Doesn’t seem like Dalton’s doing enough to push for the one or take the two for that matter. If they really want to move on from Jalen then draft a guy high to develop. You don’t trade a 7th for a washed up player and try to make him challenge for the one spot. Frankly Dalton makes no sense at all really.

I think they would absolutely trade him for a 2nd, but at this time McKee isn’t worth a 2nd.

At this point, I think we move Tanner McKee in the pre-season for a day 3 pick, something like 4th through 6th rounder.

Not sure that he's a starter for another team this year, maybe just a backup.

I’m not so sure Dalton has done nearly enough to make McKee expendable. Seems like every practice he’s been throwing it to the defense.

I'd take a 2nd in a heartbeat.

Wait... are there seriously people who think we traded a 7th for Andy Dalton so we can move on from Hurts?

He wasn't worth a 2nd when this thread was created.

Would you trade Tanner McKee for a bag of balls and a Taco Bell Luxe Cravings Box (serves 1-2) ?

Yes, you would.

Because if Tanner McKee can't beat out 38 year old Andy Dalton then he's not the answer, not here, not anywhere.

So, picking up Andy Dalton may have solved the backup QB problem, it revealed the truth about Tanner McKee as the Eagles backup QB and absolutely tanked the Tanner McKee trade market.
