Just two weeks in but you do kinda feel those 2023 vibes, offensively speaking.

In fairness, I felt 2023 offensive vibes 2 weeks into 2024 too.

Winning ugly flukey games does feel very 2023...IIRC...they had a 3 game stretch of DAL/KC/BUF where they went 3-0 and it felt like they deserved to lose every single one of those games if not for extreme luck.

I feel that a bit, but it's just so easy to overlook a lot of warts at 2-0 off a SB win.

Always fun to watch the excuses just because a W happened

I'm not saying the sky is falling but I'm not ignoring obvious problems just because we pulled out a win

The offense has problems. There is really just one new face amongst the starters, and he's a guy whose been here, and yet the offense isn't clicking at all. The running game is marginally good. The passing game is anemic, to be kind. Meanwhile, the defense, despite its youth, despite the changes in personnel, remains the strength of this team. And ST has been pretty good. We don't have much threat as a return team. But... the punt coverage has been pretty good. Mann has been kicking really well. And Jake is back to being automatic.

There's a lot of good. There's a significant amount of bad. But, ultimately, they are 2-0, and at the end of the day, that's good. Let's hope this doesn't turn into a 2023 slog... and there's time to fix things. But, we hope it doesn't stay like this.

The issue with the 2023 offense was turnovers, not yardage.

Was also the defense was just not very good to sustain the turnover rate we had. I want to say we did cut down on the turnovers but the offense kind of fizzled out down the stretch besides the cardinals/giants (first) game.

Imo I think the concern you have when talking about 2023 with this team is we kept saying in 2023 they are 10-1 and the best version hasn’t shown up yet. We believed they would. Then it got late and we never really saw their best version. It’s still early so I do think these problems aren’t going to persist at this level.

My disclaimer on this is I want to see more passing plays, plays downfield, our star WRs getting fed, etc. Not about stats, but balance in play execution so they're not one dimensional.

But the Eagles are creating a weird and interesting conversation with this. They're winning games, and won a Super Bowl. Hurts highest passing yard total year was 2023 under Brian Johnson. In fact a lot of his key stats in 2023 were better than 2022 (considered his MVP year) except for INTs. The turnovers killed them a lot. They got Barkley and turned into a running team, and wanted to address the INTs and Hurts got more conservative. They found a formula last year that worked, despite frustrations. Teams won't let them get away with it all the time, so they need to be able to execute in the passing game (and get more creative with play calling.

But the old rules and traditional ways of thinking about it have to be a little different when looking at how this team operates. They don't seem to care about going out and putting up huge passing numbers. It's almost like they're prideful about playing the way they do.

I'm mostly referring to the questionable play calls and lack of answers to the blitz on obvious passing downs. We were infamously terrible there in 2023, made big strides to correct it last season, and now seem to have regressed back to where we were 2 years ago.

28-3 vs the Giants. They ran for 269.

22-16 vs Carolina. They ran for 200.

This was the AJ passing game quote game.

I'm not sure what the 4th game is. They had 114 net vs the Ravens and dominated them.

Rams playoff game, maybe? They ran for 285.

A lot of short stuff this year from the Eagles - they haven't been able to manufacture to much in the mid and deep levels (other than 1 deep shot in each game)

Also, week 1 was at least a purposeful deep shot to a streaking Dotson.

Today, Hurts chucked it up there sight unseen as a desperation heave to beat a blitz. We have great WRs to make sure thats not a bad result more often than not. But its also horrible, horrible QBing.

It's amazing how people can watch so much football year after year and still ask questions like that.

It’s more amazing the Chiefs defensive player literally didn’t line up and just ran into the offensive backfield as soon as he could, but that didn’t draw questions or lead to obvious conclusions.

If Barkley popped off a 70 yard TD run on one of the 3 and outs and another stalled drive was a TD because Barkley had 2-3 10 yard runs and the only necessary 3rd down conversions were tush pushes...how would the offense and playcalling look then? Because that's what was missing from this game that we saw on a weekly basis last year. That's the only difference, offensively, between weeks 1/2 this year and their trademark wins on the back stretch last year. If those things happened, this game and last would have been feel good laughers.

The running game isn't as dangerous. That's the difference.

Yeah sample size of 2 and all that, so hopefully they can get some of the kinks worked out, but so far, I'm not exactly loving what I'm seeing from Patullo and the offense as a whole. And to be clear, Hurts shares some of the blame there too, but the types of problems I'm seeing are more systemic (like at the play design level) rather than the QB making countless bad decisions or reads.

We'll see. Nick got his guy vs an established guy. There is no excuse with them just having won a SB.

The timeline is always hard to replace an OC after playing in the Super Bowl. Nearly every coaching spot is taken by that point, including the landing spots for the coordinators of the Super Bowl teams. And the Super Bowl teams are behind the 8 ball. The solution is a simple one and the league needs to stop coaches from switching teams until after the Super Bowl. But, bad teams really need all the time they can get before the league year starts to come up with their offseason plan. So... Super Bowl teams are always stuck with in house hires as the only really viable option, unless they can bring in a guy that was out of the league otherwise... and is that really a 'better' solution?

Who was it

This was an absolutely ugly game but it was also a 1 off game.

Watch the replay looking for Chiefs penalties. They should have been called for about 220 yards of penalties. They were called for 45.

Their O-line knew they could hold on every play and they did.

The way this defense played while being constantly held was nothing short of amazing.

I can't remember many games like this, maybe that Carolina game in 2017 where the Eagles became a juggernaut against the Panthers and the refs?

Rams playoff game was one of them looking at the team stats had 65 net passing yards.

I'm not an X's and O's guy so tell me if this is dumb or not. Why don't they get Barkley more runs to the outside, or toss plays, and screens? Get him out in space? The O line isn't opening up the inside holes for him as much as last year.

They did call at least 3 or 4 tosses/sweeps today but there just wasn't much room for him to break loose.

Hannah Einbinder. No idea who she is. She also said something else I don't approve of, so I left that out.

Great punch by Wilson there.
