The list is the "Best Philly Athletesā€. Because the adjective "Phillyā€ is in the attributive position the list isn’t meant to provide just the Best Athlete. It means the athlete otherwise had attributes that made him quintessentially Philly.

I respectfully disagree.

This is wild to me. PSU is as much a Nike school as Oregon is.

The Co-founders of Nike were both Oregon grads. Who was the PSU grad high up in Nike?

Uh, Wilt Chamberlain is hands down the greatest athlete in Philly sports history.

Reggie White would give Schmidt a run for his money as the greatest player in Philly sports history, along with the Big Dipper and Dr J. And Bobby Clarke isn't far behind (won Hart trophy 3 times, also 2nd, 4th, 6th (2), 8th 10th (2))

Wilt played less than half his career in Philly, and is generally thought of as at best behind at least Kareem on all time centers’ lists. Dr. J’s best years were in the ABA - he won only one MVP in Philadelphia. Clarke maybe had the resume but is never mentioned among the all time greats.

Philly’s need to denigrate Mike Schmidt never ceases to amaze.

Oh, please. A very good DB, yes, but no more than that. Today he’d be a slot corner.

What's the deal with comparing players from the past to players of today, rather than measuring them against their contemporaries?

Whole thing would be avoided if they did this around the parade time

That was suggested a little while ago by a local hero.

Good point. With the rule changes it makes it hard. Imagine how the QBs of the 80s would have done with the protections and PI rules today. Their WRs got mugged on most plays and they were still that good.

Schmidt greatest over Carlton? Not in my opinion. Not over Reggie, White or Wilt Chamberlain either.

Carlton has an argument, but Schmidt spending his whole career in Philly is the tie breaker. Wilt and Reggie did more outside Philly.

Probably me just dreaming it. Foles on the big stage saying the fans and players should celebrate their 2nd SB unveiling together

I have an announcement based on some comments earlier about if Mukuba might start this game. Yes. He will. Yeah DeJean took a few weeks till Fangio was comfortable he was up to speed. But they had ol' veteran Maddox in place to allow that to happen. Who do you play ahead of Mukuba? Afraid he might make a few mistakes? Well, Sydney Brown will too. There is no wily vet to place hold for the first few weeks. It seems likely that itll be trial by fire for Mukuba.

I got that vibe too. Adoree and Mukaba will start is my guess

I bet they didn't even ask him a question about Thursday. We need a 44-6 like beatdown.

Is that your score prediction?

You are moving the goalposts. To say Reggie is not a great athlete because Norman Braman was an ass is ridiculous.

Peak Wilt would consistently take Peak Kareem to the woodshed.

You are unilaterally inserting the word "quintessentially.ā€ Look at the graphic in the tweet. Where do you see anything tha even implies quintessentially.

Arguably, Lower Merion’s finest Kobe Bryant should be #24.

Why is where they were great athletes important

Fair point. What I should have said that he was never better than the third or forth best DB when he played. Good but not great in his time.

Have to imagine BG will do it. Seems right

Even though football season is about to start, it’s still technically summer and will be for a few more weeks, but I have a yearly tradition of watching summer movies and ending my summer movie watches the day football starts so I have two more days to finish my movies. I will close the summer out with Master and Commander and my favorite movie Lost in Translation. Then it’s on to football and my fall movie slate.

Schmidt played before advanced metrics became a thing. Lifetime OPS over 0.900!

Most fans didn't give him credit for his OBP (or even understood that walks were good). They focused on a ho-hum batting average and lots of strike outs. Only later in his career did fans began to understand the greatness they were witnessing.

Yep. I was looking at his stats a few weeks ago and he would have likely won several more MVP’s had advanced metrics been around.

A lifetime OPS over .900 is legendary.

Not so sure about that. Most reports said that Sidney Brown had a really good camp. No reason to rush a rookie if you have a vet playing well.
