The Brian Johnson offense looks very different than the Kevin Patullo offense. They are not the same despite having similar lineups.

Frank is coaching Stanford.

And even if someone wanted to put the entirety of the offensive issues on Patullo which I think is crazy, it's still ultimately on Sirianni because

1) Sirianni advocated for him

2) Sirianni is the head coach. He has the power to step in, take charge, and either force Patullo to change things up or change the OC.

If it's completely Patullo and Sirianni is just sitting there with his thumb up his ass every week, then that's on the head coach.

Hurts is a competitor. He wants to try and convert those as much as AJ does.

We converted a bunch 3rd and longs and specifically to AJ when we went for them last week. But of course that was in the situation when Siri and KP didnt have a choice to be conservative. Some more of that in closer games wouldn't be a bad thing as you say but to make some, you have to be willing to try them first.

I personally will never want to move on but I also don't think he's ever doing crunches in the driveway. I'm not going back to the days of Pinkston & Thrash, Small & Johnson. Any top alpha #1 WR is going to want the ball. He goes games with 2-3 targets, that's just nuts. And who are we replacing him with? There's a lot of bust first round WR's, cough Reagor cough, so I don't want to go that route. And I certainly don't want some complacent #1 WR. And if we do develop some draft pick who becomes a great player, they also will want the ball. AJ is already here and changes the dynamics of the game and changed the franchise too. People may make it seem so simple to replace him but it's definitely not. We won a Super Bowl and he's a major reason as to why. Screw all that, he needs to be here so we can win again, and possibly again. No AJ, I think the odds significantly drop and we become marginalized.

Broncos are really loaded on D. He's getting about 25% of the defensive snaps, I'd expect that to climb throughout the season. But yeah I thought he would've had one of the jobs lined up in the secondary. Still, really nice player.

They just gave him an extension, I can't see a trade, this year at least. I was hoping the dopey Duval's would've sucked and we could've cornered the market on Georgia defenders, but they're actually playing well and tied for first place.

You think Kellen Moore came in and mostly ran Brian Johnson's plays? Or that Brian Johnson was running Steichen's? No. More often than not, they're gonna install their own set over the summer, and that's the majority of what you'll see from the offense on Sundays.

A new OC doesn't come in and literally throw out everything, but they're gonna have their own philosophy and concepts they will want to run that will often be markedly different than their predecessor. By and large, you'll always see a new offense with a new OC unless they came up under the same coaching tree.

A guy like Ben Johnson doesn't have the success he does because he's only a good play caller on game days. It's the other 6 days of the week and throughout the off-season, where he's putting in the work to self-scout, identify his own tendencies and tells, figure out better route combos to expose weaknesses in each of the coverage calls, work alerts in as blitz beaters, etc.

It's constant churn. Avoiding stagnation is virtually a requirement in this league to stay one step ahead of DCs. That's what separate the great offensive minds from the mediocre ones. And until someone can convince me otherwise, Patullo is firmly in the latter category.
