And yet he’s not a top 10 QB in the NFL right now according to some.

Honestly Hurts reminds me a lot of Brady. Not in terms of what he’s won so far of course. I just think he maximises what he has in terms of ability and he’s so focused on winning and on getting better. I also never felt Brady was the best QB in the NFL in any one given year (there may be outliers but overall I don’t think he was) in respect of his talent but he won and he won and he won. I think Hurts is similar. He wins and he gets the job done but he’s not the most talented and he doesn’t have the best arm and there’s probably at least 2-4 QBs you’d pick over him if you were starting a franchise.

Early career Brady was not the dominant passer we remember him by. Peyton was very clearly the better player up until the Gronk years. Tom’s first 4000 yard season wasn’t until year 6… for a guy who couldn’t run at all. He was purely a situational QB. Super clutch but wasn’t slinging it all over. Check downs and QBs sneaks. His first SB year he averaged 189 yards a game. Remember that huge 2007 year with Moss? That was the first time he ever threw for even 30 TDs.

Brady had 3 completely different HoF careers.

2000-2006: Greatest Game Manager in NFL history, 3800 yards per 17 games. 3 SB appearances, 3 rings

2007-2015: putting the league on notice, from record Moss year to deflategate suspensions 3 SH appearances 1 ring

2016-2022: impossible to fathom this era started at 39 years old, became a true gunslinger averaging 4800 yards per 17 games. 4 SB appearances, 3 rings

The Eagles keep winning and Hurts has had zero running game. Why don't we try to get our OPY going before shifting the entire scheme because of aesthetics?

I'm the one arguing they are doing what they are doing for a reason. But historically low int numbers while the offense is stuck in 1st gear and 30th in the NFL in yards per play suggest that they don't necessarily need to shift the whole scheme, but maybe it's time to inch towards being less conservative.

Yeah, the offense is bad enough right now that, behind closed doors, they need to be looking for change and answers...not just completely staying the course because they are 4-0.

I'm so intrigued by Nakobe Dean. Odds are he's going to regress a little with that injury, but you also never know. If Dean is healthy, there has to be a role for him. I keep seeing the conversation around getting all 3 LB on the field and using Campbell as an edge rusher, but I think we're looking at that scenario all wrong. Campbell can do it all so I have no problem with him in coverage. Dean is at his best playing downhill and attacking the backfield. I'd love to see a defense with all 3 LB on the field and Dean is just a roaming joker of sort who has one job. Attack behind the LOS.

I think Dean being out is one of the reasons teams are having some success running the ball. He was an excellent run defender last season.

That producer Cliff on the Philly Special makes it so hard to listen to that podcast. Anytime they have him start talking I just turn it off. I don't know why Sheil constantly feels the need to force him on there.

Half our drives end in 3 plays. I'd live to know the average yards per play on those 3 and outs Any questions as to why AJ is putting up a stink?

Phrases our OC should no longer be able to utter publicly:

They are covering our concepts

We are one block away

Missing angles

We don't want to force it

We just got off rhythm

I understand they haven't looked great but they've beaten three really good teams and the cowgirls when they had hope of being good. The stuff we're seeing can be fixed over the next four weeks and during the bye. We have some mediocre to bad teams over the next four weeks so that should help us get to the bye in good shape.

Honestly I dont think the Cowboys are as bad as people think. Defensively they are bad but they can still put up points.

Not running coward's draws anytime it is more than 3rd and 7 would be a start.

It's 100% at Patullo and Nick. It feels obvious that Nick is emphasizing playing turnover free football, and Patullo is being hyper conservative in order to accomplish that. The issue is since the running game is broken, we can't hold the ball and kill the clock the same way we did last year. I knew we were in trouble in the 2nd half because KP kept calling useless runs into the middle of the line -- he just kept hoping one would break. Hope isn't a play calling strategy. At the very least, run to the outside and give SB a chance to find a seam.

One thing that always sticks with me in the professional conundrum. How do I become a people manager, when all jobs need me to have experience? Sadly, the only way to do that is what the team is living now.

A further point on is the OC has changed on this each for the last 4 seasons - what the team needs is some stability at the position. I can't say if KP is the right man. based on 4 games.

Never going to fix it that way without totally changing the game. You'd have to remove the helmet completely as it just isn't possible to hit with your shoulder without having your head nearby. In any case, the rules are already in place and the refs just missed this one.

You will never get rid of head to head contact in any competitive sport where players tackle each other, etc. But what you can do is emphasise that players need to use the correct technique when tackling to reduce issues that occur in every games. I forget the game, but last weekend, a DB decided to contact a WR with his helmet after a catch. It didn't need to be done, but it was.

Cooper Dejean tackles with great technique, as do other players - the tackles don't splash for Sports Center, but they are very effective.. Changing a players mindset from using the helmet to lead a tackle vs educating them on proper technique, and punishing egregious helmet pops, should be a winner for a safety conscious sport. Hurts concussion last year was entirely preventable (as an example).

It's usually a fairly significant regression with that type of injury. I'm not expecting much of an impact from him this year.

Dak is playing well and their OL is performing better than I expected; they have to with that defense (it's annoying that they only looked competent against us).

Injuries and the fact that Steen is no Becton. When it comes to PUSH, Becton was a punisher... he bullied defenders and made them look for a soft place to lie down. Steen is much more of a guy who walls off his assignment, he doesn't redefine the LOS. Dickerson likely wouldn't be playing if he wasn't a crazy gamer. It got us a NFC CG win last year, but that gamer mentality might actually be hurting the team more than helping right now. He might need to sit down in order to get healthy enough to handle the second half of the season.

yeah, there are many things the team needs to address and fix, but i am confident this will be more like last year and not '23.

Well, finish your sentence. Trust hurts to what?

They trust Hurts to find a way to win the game, one way or another, on a 4th quarter drive. They trust Hurts to help control the clock and get just enough points to win by playing his dynamic brand of football.

They don't trust Hurts to throw the ball 28+ times per game while pushing it downfield with anything besides a 1-2x per game deep rainbow. That's simple observational fact they don't trust him to do that. If you think otherwise, I'm not sure what to tell you.

There is absolutely nothing dynamic about the offense and Hurts currently. Outside of the Dallas game he’s in the drivers seat on cruise control though.

Yup their OL is playing much better than i thought they would. They were very good against the GB on Sunday night. That said Dallas seems to have a great offense at home and on the road so-so. Small sample size but they are averaging 40 ppg at home and 17 ppg on the road. 457 yards per game at home (granted 2 OT games) as compared to 351.5 yards per game on the road.

I'm not saying we didn't have issues under Moore, just not to this degree.

The first half of the season last year there was issues, a lot of things were simplified. Like we discussed before, the line protection responsibility calls placed on Hurts took a while for him to get down last year…but at the end of the day, the concepts were light years ahead of where we are now. Motions were limited, hot routes limited, etc because of time crunches. That got fixed by mid season. Right now i have no clue if there’s an underlying reason other than Patullo is just a bad play caller or time manager with the play clock.

From Roobs observations in 411:

7. It was an odd game for Hurts, but we should point out that with 24 passes Sunday, Hurts has now thrown 241 consecutive regular-season passes without an interception. He broke the franchise record of 233 set by Nick Foles in 2013. Hurts has now gone 10 straight starts without an interception, tied for the 3rd-longest streak in NFL history. Justin Herbert had an 11-game streak last year and Tom Brady had an 11-game streak over the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Jared Goff in 2022 and 2023 and Derek Carr in 2018 also had 10-game streaks. Since throwing four interceptions in the Eagles’ first three games last year, Hurts has thrown 360 passes over 16 regular-season games with just one interception. He’s the first quarterback in NFL history to throw at least 300 passes over a 16-game span with one or fewer interceptions.

Have you ever heard the expression that if you’ve never missed a flight, you’re spending too much time at the airport? Late 2023 and early 2024, Hurts was turning the ball over quite a bit and that triggered a significant change in the offense.

Considering how congested and conservative the pass attack has become, it may be time to paradoxically stop celebrating the lack of INTs. I’m not saying that we need to see Hurts go out and toss a couple INTs next week (he nearly did with a couple of those throws against the Bucs anyway). But to the point of everyone who hates the coaches, 150 yards passing per game and no INTs is probably a sign that it’s time to push a little bit.

I understand your analogy, but I believe it is a tortured analogy at best. The consequences of missing a flight are rather mild in most, but not all, cases. The next flight is readily available, and we rarely have an appointment immediately after arriving at our destination. The consequences of an interception are anything but mild. Mahomes and DeJean are textbook evidence of that, with lots of opportunity gained by the Eagles and lots of opportunity lost by the Chiefs. When you miss a flight, who/what gains opportunity? And even for you as the traveler, what opportunity is lost?

I highly suggest you go back and watch Campbell when he was lined up on the line last week. He is not an edge rusher…he’s too light and gets stood up easily.

Dean was good once they found out how to utilize him properly, limit his coverage snaps and allowing him to keep the ball in front of him. He improved greatly in angles and tackling. We have been so starved for good LB’s that average is lauded at times. He couldn’t tackle his own shadow for half the year last year. I’m curious if they’ll find a spot for him, but as of right now there really is none with how the D is playing.

Mental health by the end of October could be really fantastic or really in a bad spot
