February 5Feb 5 Stout could have simply just realized he's old and doesn't want to go through another offensive scheme change. He's done it before so it's not that he can't. He may have felt slighted by the run game decisions by Siri and Patullo but these are grown men. Stout has been through worse. The season was frustrating, 3 of his starting O linemen were dealing with injuries and missing time. Probably just a bunch of factors and he thought it's a good time to step away. There are a lot of questions and concerns about Sirianni's decision making though. Promoted then protected his friend instead of demoting him in season. Now it appears he's on a lame duck season, unless the coaching staff excels with him as CEO type and Mannion and Grizzard run the offense the way Fangio runs the defense (let's face it, what does Nick contribute to the defensive coaching?).This will also be a prove it year for some players too. By this time next year we may see AJ Brown and Hurts gone, and the offense built around a new QB and Smitty as the #1 receiver (I think he could already be that this year).
February 5Feb 5 Nate Tice doesn't think the Eagles will be running a Shanahan style offense, but more of a Kellen Moore-ish, Shane Steichen, Air Coryell style offense given his ties to Mike Riley in college.Just one man's opinion of course. Other guys who cover the team have said they think the Eagles want the Shanahan/McVay oriented scheme.

Mailata is an interesting case study because he's only ever had one O Line coach. Sometimes a new perspective can be helpful. Not that he'd unlearn anything, but that he was reliant on his particular method of teaching, combined with the emotional impact of the move as well. How much can your heart still be in a game that came to you later in life when the only mentor you've ever known is now gone? Maybe it's not the best analogy, but I'm thinking of the drop off with Becton this past year. Or years ago on the other side of the ball, with Q when JJ and Dawk were gone. Or a completely different sport with Tyson and Cus.

Will he be sad that Stout is gone? Absolutely. But what if... he takes to the new coach too?

And, why cant a team just do both equally well, and in pretty even amounts?WIthout knowing for sure, it does seem to me like the two concepts are different enough that teams get married to one concept or another. There's a pretty simple explanation for this as it applies to the Eagles. Personnel. With Dickerson and Becton we had two huge and powerful guards. With the center double teaming to either side, we ran inside zone because our guards could block anybody 1-on-1 and, with the center doubling, we could create a hole with either the C or G climbing to the second level. We had the personnel to win inside, so that's where we ran...a lot. We did it years earlier with Brooks and Seumalo. With somewhat smaller and more agile interior linemen, teams run outside zone or wide zone or stretch where the OL try to get the DL moving sideways and let the RB pick his hole. Personnel for this offense: OL who can move and an RB who can read the blocks and make a decisive cut, like Terrell Davis or Christian McCaffery. The Eagles ran some OZ but more often we ran a pin and pull, where one of the guards would block the man covering the center and the center would pull around, go past the OT to whatever side, then turn up with the RB behind him. We did it because we had centers who could run in Kelce and Jurgens. So, the answer to what teams run, not just the Eagles, is personnel. Whether they draft and/or sign specific types of players is another matter. Stoutland obviously likes big guys. Howard Mudd liked agile guys. Juan Castillo liked heavy guys, primarily to pass block.

February 5Feb 5 Jeff Stoutland is available. Eagles need an OL coach. Perfect fit.But seriously, given how these assistant coaching things usually end up going for the Eagles when they lose someone respected, I would not be the least bit surprised if in 9 months they're begging Stoutland to come back to fix the OL.
