I had asked this question earlier but didn't see an answer. Upcoming Eagles FA, (Phillips, Dean, Mann etc.) Do they Eagles still hold there rights up until March 11? Can they negotiate a new contract with any of them today if they wanted or do they have to wait until the new year to sign them as UFA?

Yea they hold their rights and can extend them at any time

Just a quick jump in to the comments...geez. Know nothing about the guy, but is it a good thing when fans are excited to see a coach leave?

The Eagles are essentially handing the keys to the entire offense, not just play calling and scheme, but everything to a 33 year old coach who has never ran an offense in his life and has 2 years experience as an assistant coach. They better be right is all I'll say. If this all blows up, they'll look really bad and look like they have no idea what they're doing.

(And begs the question if they're willing to give up so much control to Mannion, what is he doing here? But I digress"

Nice to hear. It's hard to judge position coaches

While the status of Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores remains unresolved, Minnesota has quietly made a key change to another portion of its coaching staff.

Via Alec Lewis of TheAthletic.com, offensive line coach Chris Kuper is out after four years in the position.

As explained by Lewis, Kuper’s contract expired — and the Vikings opted not to renew it. And for good reason. The line has been a constant liability during Kevin O’Connell’s time with the team.

Kuper was part of O’Connell’s initial staff. Now, O’Connell will need to find someone else to teach and lead the five players responsible for buying time for the quarterbacks and opening holes in the running game.

Of course, it’s possible that the team hasn’t done an ideal job of acquiring capable linemen. For now, however, the unit’s coach is the one who has shouldered the blame through a low-key firing.

Kuper was on Fangios staff in Denver. This was Fangios demand for coming back another year.

They better keep Stout on retainer in case this thing goes sideways so they can bring him back. Because this entire staff could be gutted in a year if this experiment goes to crap.

I feel like the Eagles are positioning to move on from Siriani and Fangio next off season.

They’ve chosen a very young OC and letting him bring his own staff, and hired a passing game coordinator, who had OC interviews elsewhere. If Mannion proves creative and offensive excellence, he’ll be due for a HC job. If the defense continues to be solid and we have an electric offense, it should be the sign that Mannion can run the offense and we can filter through defensive coordinators when needed. Mannion goes to HC, Grizzard to OC, etc etc. I’m not sure what the Eagles will see in Siriani if OC’s need to be HC caliber for him to have consistent success.

Fangio already contemplated retirement and Jim Schwartz was apparently in contact and is taking a year off. Stout retired and was filled by a GB guy following Mannion.

This would lead to a young up and coming HC hire, who proved for a year that he make the offense click work with Hurts/AJ/Say. Schwartz taking over at DC (proved elite DC with the Browns) after already spending 4-5 years in Philly. QB Coach/OL coach may tell us more.

This team has invested in too much capital on offense for them to sputter every other year. If the offense is amazing or the offense has the same exact issues - both will tell that Siriani is the constant in the instability, and the OC are hiding his flaws in offensive schemes. This seems like hiring a successor a year early, in a year where 10 new HC were hired.

I know you're kidding but doesn't hurt to keep Fangio happy regardless

I think it was Gregg Easterbrook years ago that the NFL ratings should always go up while the earth's population goes up. So claiming the most watched ever has some relevance, but it might just mean the same percentage of people are watching it as before.

I know that 25 million people watched something else.

I thought Minnesotas line was crap

On top of coaching it, Chris Kuper played under Mike Shanahan, so he definitely understands the scheme.

They are going all in on the Shanahan scheme.

Not a lot of investment in the OL while he was there. Also, Darrisaw has been injury prone.

He has more to work with here. More importantly, there will be more cohesion between the running game and passing game. And that, IMO, was the flaw in the scheme last season.

It wasn’t very good. Then again their Qb situation also sucked

What are Kuper's accomplishments and strengths?

If the argument is he didn't have any good lineman, are we saying that a coach is only as good as the players he has?

I have no idea if Kuper will be a good O line coach for us or not, just some thoughts about the decision:

Mannion has only coached for 2 years, so he hasn't worked with that many people. So he's hiring someone he worked with for one season. Familiarity can be good, but also limiting. The Eagles probably haven't had other O line coaches on their radar since they didn't need to, having Stout. But I wonder if there was a real search or Mannion just went with Kuper.

How much does talent weigh in, I don't know the talent the Vikings had on the O line. Look at our WRs who are talented, no one would credit Morehead for that, everyone wants him fired. So production on the field doesn't necessarily always mean the position coach was good or bad. They may teach skills well and do a good job in the position group meetings and practices but lack talent. Or the coach may not be good enough and Mannion is just hiring the guy he knows. I have no idea. I look forward to seeing insights from people knowledgeable about it. The Vikings fans on that tweet comment section say he was bad so we'll see.

KOC is highly thought of and decided not to bring back Kuper. That MIN OL looked rough. Not a huge fan of the hire.

That said, I will lay out an optimistic case. Kuper grew up in Alaska, played college ball at North Dakota, had good athleticism but far from a freak of nature, and was a 5th round pick, yet he turned into a rock solid guard who earned a big 2nd NFL contract. Those guys tend to do everything the right way and know how to navigate the NFL. Add that with experience coaching in a Shanahan inspired scheme, and our organizational emphasis on bringing in great OL talent and going above and beyond to keep players healthy, and I see some scenarios this works.

I just think we could’ve done better…

I think an issue is the Eagles got off to a late start with having to replace their offensive line coach. I actually agree with Bo Wulf and Sheil theory that the Eagles were trying to retain Stoutland and convince him to be the OL coach. Why it took as long for the news to come out and they kind of miscalculated him coming back as just OL coach and not RGC and OL coach.

I also tend to think if this thing implodes that if stoutland is still not a oline coach somewhere else and he’s still in that building that next year, he’s gonna be your oline coach again

If they even have that much of a connection. It was just one year as an Assistant O-line coach. I'm sure they had some interaction but he was probably a Munchak guy.
