What are Kuper's accomplishments and strengths?

If the argument is he didn't have any good lineman, are we saying that a coach is only as good as the players he has?

I don't know the answer to the talent they had, but in general I don't think people say a coach is ONLY as good as the players they have. Good coaches will coach guys up. Coaching matters. Talent also matters. There are various factors like scheme, injury, etc. as well.

Minnesotas line sacks allowed the past 4 seasons

47, 47, 58 and 60

For reference, Eagles were 48, 42, 58 and 36

Worth noting that includes Two Superbowl runs for the Eagles and 2 other playoff games. Minnesota only had 2 playoff games in that span.

You can argue about if it will work or not, but the FO has a coherent vision with the signing of Mannion as the OC, and Kuper and Mahaffey joining. There is a clear offensive identity shift towards the Shanahan/McVay principles. This is addressing the most glaring issue of the Eagles dropping from 7th to 19th in scoring PPG, and EPA from 4th to 19th.

Can't tell you how many times I'd see Hurts roll out and immediately know the play was dead. Mannion's (Shanahan/McVay) system should be perfect for Hurts running play action boots and read options while maximizing Barkley with outside zone. DeVonta should feast as a volume type receiver, and we'll probably all be blown away watching AJ actually being utilized on crossers.

I imagine there will be some growing pains as the OL learns the new techniques and blocking schemes. Long term, I think they have made the right moves and the rest of the offseason should be fascinating to watch.

We had a good run of OL coaches dating back to 1995. Bill Callahan, Juan Castillo, Howard Mudd, and Jeff Stoutland.

I also tend to think if this thing implodes that if stoutland is still not a oline coach somewhere else and he’s still in that building that next year, he’s gonna be your oline coach again

Agreed. Don’t know how you couldn’t see the parallels between this and Howie’s situation in 2015.

We have taken the approach that a Shanahan inspired offense is our panacea. If we faceplant this year, heads are gonna roll.

Finding stats on certain things is hard without paying for special sites so I asked ChatGPT to pull the O line rankings under Kuper's seasons there 2022-2025. It pulled from PFF rankings:

2022: 19th

2023: 12th

2024: 9th

2025: pre-season projected 5th-7th but injuries hurt them, ended up 22nd.

ChatGPT summary:

Summary: Vikings Offensive Line Rankings by Year
• 2022: ~19th (projected/analyst view) — viewed as below average.
• 2023: Around middle of the pack (~10th-15th depending on metric), with strong tackles but inconsistency inside.
• 2024: Mid-tier to ~top-10 projected and graded unit (PFF ~13th; PFN ~9th).
• 2025: Entered as a top-5/7 unit in many preseason analytics but real-world play dipped due to injuries; mid-season PFF saw ~22nd.

The Eagles in that span were #1 until last season about #7.

Obviously Stout is the best and this hire is a downgrade in coaching. Kuper also likely gets an upgrade in talent. Let's hope the marriage of scheme and familiarity with Mannion helps out.

With Dickerson and Jurgens broken bodies, Lane potentially retiring or playing half the season, whew boy we need to really address O line in the draft.

Do we know what his scheme's expectations are for the OG? Have to imagine it will impact the decision Dickerson makes.

I think in general fans believe that organizations in sports are far more meticulous and calculating than they actually are. For example when the Eagles did the Philly Special in the SB, everyone's immediately thinking "OMG!! They had that dialed up, they scouted the Patriots and knew that play would destroy them, they must've had that in the bag for a year!" Turns out it was kinda done on a whim and they didn't even practice it very much. I think a lot of things organizations do are way less methodical than people realize.

My guess is they didn't have Kuper circled as some amazing coach on some list that if Stoutland were to leave or retire they were going to get this guy. It probably more went down like "F... we did not expect to lose Stout. Ok what are we gonna do? Hey Sean... you have anyone in mind who may be able to work with your staff?"

"How about Chris Kuper, I know him from my Minnesota days."

"Alright, let's take a shot on Chris"

I’m interested to see how introducing this new offense meshes with our organizational philosophy on limiting practice time/keeping players healthy. The 49ers and Vikings seem to get ravaged by injuries every year to the point that you gotta start questioning whether it’s "luck” or an organizational issue.

Even though Fangio ****es about it every time he gets the chance, he’s adapted and he’s clearly been great. Wondering how a 1st time OC installing a new scheme will adapt.

Not specifically from Mannion himself, but Shanahan likes athletic lineman with mobility. However, its all over the place when it comes to practice. 49ers are definitely a lot smaller on the interior than the Rams and Packers.

49ers Guards:
Spencer Burford 6ft 4in 300 (Starter)

Connor Colby 6ft 5in 309 (Starter)

Dominick Puni 6ft 5in 313

Rams Guards:
Steve Avila 6ft 3in 338 (Starter)

Justin Dedich 6ft 2in 300 (Starter)

Kevin Dotson 6ft 4in 330

Packers Guards:
Aaron Banks 6ft 5in 325 (Starter)

Lecitus Smith 6ft 3in 314 (Starter)

Anthony Belton 6ft 6in 336

Jordan Morgan 6ft 5in 311

KOC is highly thought of and decided not to bring back Kuper. That MIN OL looked rough. Not a huge fan of the hire.

That said, I will lay out an optimistic case. Kuper grew up in Alaska, played college ball at North Dakota, had good athleticism but far from a freak of nature, and was a 5th round pick, yet he turned into a rock solid guard who earned a big 2nd NFL contract. Those guys tend to do everything the right way and know how to navigate the NFL. Add that with experience coaching in a Shanahan inspired scheme, and our organizational emphasis on bringing in great OL talent and going above and beyond to keep players healthy, and I see some scenarios this works.

I just think we could’ve done better…

KOC also decided to go with JJ McCarthy instead of Sam Darnold.

https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/jeff-stoutland-replacement-vikings-chris-kuper-broncos-vic-fangio/713159/

Kuper, 43, played at North Dakota and was the Broncos’ 5th-round pick in 2006. He spent eight seasons with the Broncos under Mike Shanahan, Josh Daniels and John Fox, playing in 90 games with 79 starts, mainly at right guard.

After a year coaching at Columbine High in Colorado in 2015, he began his NFL coaching career in 2016 as a quality control coach with the Dolphins under Adam Gase on a staff that also included Ben Johnson. He was promoted to assistant offensive line coach in 2017 and then served the same role from 2019 through 2021 under Fangio. He got his first o-line coach in Minnesota with O’Connell in 2022.

During his four years in Minnesota, the Vikings allowed 203 sacks, the 5th-most in the NFL during that span and 40 more than the Eagles allowed in the same span. They were 43-25, the 5th-best won-loss record in the league, and they were 14th scoring. Right tackle Brian O’Neill was a Pro Bowler in 2024 under Kuper.

Well Nick is still the Head Coach so I would imagine that's up to him, and would remain the same. If the new offensive coaches start changing things that Nick would normally be in charge of, that would be telling.

Very surprised they didn't maybe try to find some offe side line coach from college like they did with Stoutland. This hire does not seem good...

Shame Kelce has so many better options out there otherwise I think he could have been that eventually Stoutland replacement.

I feel like the Eagles are positioning to move on from Siriani and Fangio next off season.

They’ve chosen a very young OC and letting him bring his own staff, and hired a passing game coordinator, who had OC interviews elsewhere. If Mannion proves creative and offensive excellence, he’ll be due for a HC job. If the defense continues to be solid and we have an electric offense, it should be the sign that Mannion can run the offense and we can filter through defensive coordinators when needed. Mannion goes to HC, Grizzard to OC, etc etc. I’m not sure what the Eagles will see in Siriani if OC’s need to be HC caliber for him to have consistent success.

Fangio already contemplated retirement and Jim Schwartz was apparently in contact and is taking a year off. Stout retired and was filled by a GB guy following Mannion.

This would lead to a young up and coming HC hire, who proved for a year that he make the offense click work with Hurts/AJ/Say. Schwartz taking over at DC (proved elite DC with the Browns) after already spending 4-5 years in Philly. QB Coach/OL coach may tell us more.

This team has invested in too much capital on offense for them to sputter every other year. If the offense is amazing or the offense has the same exact issues - both will tell that Siriani is the constant in the instability, and the OC are hiding his flaws in offensive schemes. This seems like hiring a successor a year early, in a year where 10 new HC were hired.

Pretty sure Schwartz wants a HC position

Pretty sure the quick practices are more an organizational choice so not sure it is Nick's call.

I'd be shocked if any significant practice change didn't come from Nick/Howie. They are using analytics with regards to time and recovery to cut back on injuries.

Another coach hired and Aaron Moorehead is still here...

Yea that’s pretty amazing he’s still here

Wonder how much AJ still wants to go to the Patriots after that mess of an offensive performance.
