Congrats - I got out as soon as I had my attestation hours. I was not a lifer. Private is so much better.

My firm wasn't too bad as far as work life balance.  Tax season always sucks, but besides that it was very chill.  Over the last couple years I just got sick of dealing with client's crap.  Especially government and non-profit.  Their books are trash and they never provide you what you need in a timely fashion.  Just wait until they need the report and info dump you after sitting on it for months and demand the report asap.  Worst part about government is you can qualify your opinion due to poor reconciliation and they don't give a F.  They still get their bonds or refinancing.  Basically they know their books are crap and it doesn't matter to them.  Just get them financial statements and they're happy.  Their revenue is guaranteed as long as they file necessary reports.

Just got back from my mother's oncologist. They're really happy with the results of her latest CT Scan. All of the cancer has reduced a little. So a really good report.

I did more audit than tax but both sucked and I had mostly manufacturing and a few non-profit clients.  **** government lack of accountability and their employees is why our township manager was able to steal over $3M in 8 years from us, the taxpayers, despite being "audited" every year.

That there is what you call poor internal controls.

Yeah they were made recommendations every year that were never followed. The Supervisors just let her run the show with complete autonomy - never picked up a bank rec or opened a cc statement to peruse. Complete negligence that led to fraud. Then they tried to convince us all at a town hall that she was some mastermind - she wasn’t. She was doing things like writing out checks to herself and then changing it in QBs after the fact to a vendor name which is why Quickbooks should only be used by small business owners. So infuriating.

A lot of small governments use quickbooks.  It's functional if there is some segregation of duty.  Auditor's should have dug into the audit function a little which would've notified them of check vendor changes after the fact.  Especially since it was a one person show apparently.  Shame really.  My guess is they don't rotate auditor's and there was a long standing relationship which allows too much comfort and an ability for her to know what they test and she could get away with.

Oh yeah it definitely was a failing at the audit level too. It was a cake job, same old same old I’m sure, and they didn’t do proper testing. They did recommend new accounting software with better controls among other things but never really followed up on their recommendations. It doesn’t help that many audit teams send in their greenies that don’t know what they’re doing or looking at to do the grunt work and test selection. Having been an auditor I know it’s not a fun job and you’re often treated as a nuisance - but it IS a nuisance. Anyway - private is so much better. You have more consistency and don’t have to bill or deal with clients. You just have to deal with the same annoying employees everyday who don’t understand accounting or why you put controls and best practices in place and executives that want to blame you for their poor decision making when the financials aren’t favorable even after you’ve provided detailed budgets, forecasts and recommendations. Good luck! :-)

Thanks!  I know you know the pains of both worlds.  I'm moving to a financial services company so not even as intensive as manufacturing. Basically after interviewing with the CFO then CEO it put my mind at ease.  CFO is 4 years out from retirement and I would be stepping into her spot.  Laid back family culture.  As a parent you appreciate that.  Not a cold hearted corporate machine.

I once showed @BFit who number 2 works for.  You don't mistype a thread title in WU or you wind up with crap in your PM box.  Literally.
