When does St. Vic get heat for 2nd half defense

Featured Replies

VIc will get some HEAT when it's deserved, rightfully so, just as ANY Coach would and should.

IMO, no heat is deserved yet. But its sooooooooo early.

Would like them to be a bit better against the run. But, credit the opposing team. If the QB sees our D in a 4 man front, 2 LBs and 5 DBs, I'd run the ball too.

Jesus. Starters donโ€™t play any snaps in pre season and the field temp was well over 100 and people canโ€™t figure out why we didnโ€™t look like a well oiled machine. ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

I've seen excuses for the first 2 games this year - how do they compare to the first two games last year? Better or worse?

You also conveniently ignore the second half problems they had all of last year and which continue to plague them

What about the consistent second half issues which go back to last year and have continued?

Good point.

I just think that, maybe, we overrate how good Vic and the D, and his scheme, really is. They cannot play 'lights out D' for an entire season, as there's too many good players and Coaches in the NFL on the Offensive side of the ball.

Just need to play consistent, good football. Which they've done under Vic, for the most part.

Wasn't Vic contemplating retirement this past off-season? Or was it last off-season? Just wondering, as that would be a BIG Coaching void to fill.

This is actually a trend with our defense since Fangio took over: the first 3-4 games are not too good, but after that, they become elite.

This is me just speculating, but I think it makes sense. Every year there are new pieces and it takes some time for the communication to be perfect and for Vic to figure out how to maximize the talent of his players.

I'm not worried about the defense. Greenard will start playing, Vic will solve the situation at S, DeJean will be back to being DeJean and we'll end up with a top 5 unit again.

Your title is an accusation disguised as a question. Do you need everybody to agree with you first, before you say what you want to say?

Nonsense ... I'm not "ignoring" anything. I've been on record here since early offseason saying we should expect a slow start on offense due to the change in scheme and the OL issues (and figuring out how to replace Brown's productivity). On defense they always seem to come out of the gates slow for the first couple of games. I've also been saying that if come mid October we continue to look out of sorts then I will be concerned. Just need to be patient (and hopeful) during this early portion of the season. Fingers crossed!

Vic gets a ton of fluff questions. Nonsense like what makes Zac Baun so good. He also has by far the shortest PCs compared to the other coordinators and Siri.

I would like one reporter to ask Vic if he is told by Howie and Siri who to start and if he is told how much PT certain players should get. Also, if he is consulted about the players on D the team should keep on final cutdown.

I think Philly fans got caught up in all the preseason bluster from the Philly media........

"Carter and Davis are in shape and going to have a big year....."

"Jalyx Hunt looks like an unstoppable monster off the edge....."

"the eagles may have the best 3 starting corners in the league....."

"Ojomo is primed for a big season in his contract year....."

"Campbell ready to step into Dean's shoes....."

"Eagles defense primed to be a top 3 unit this year....."

Now, all those things are very possible......but Campbell is still developing, Greenard hasn't played, Dejean is banged up and the safeties are in flux. I think they're 5th in QB hurries but they played 2 very athletic QB that limited the sacks......and the run defense needs adjustments.

As I said in another post, Fangio's defenses start slow the first couple games, but he makes adjustments and they start playing a lot better.

I already forgave Vic after the 49rs game last year getting dog walked for 2 TDs in the 4th QTR at home against a banged up team that had no business being in that game.

Enjoy the first 4 weeks of the new preseason since nobody plays anymore before the regular season this what we get. Rusty play with a mix of figuring out how to fit guys in to replace the lost talent from the previous season. It takes 4-5 weeks to even know what they have going. They're halfway now. Monday night will tell a little more of what they're capable of being. Honestly I wouldn't worry too much about the defense seeing what the o line has been up to.

I for the life of me can't understand the Campbell hate. The kid had a sack the first game and second in tackles. Most tackles and a FF in the second game. He is going to be a beast for this team for years to come provided he stays healthy. I'm a huge Campbell fan. Get on the wagon now before its too late don't be a hater.

How in the world do you forgive Vic for that horrible 49ers playoff loss??!!! TRASH.

Thatโ€™s why I worry about the Defense, because, if the Offense is putrid, then that will affect the Defense. They cannot carry the team for an entire season.

Iโ€™m at a loss for what I just said. ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜ฌ

First, because the offense was absolute garbage and couldn't stay on the field. They should have publicly apologized to the defense for how they played in that game. Everyone earned a piece of the pie as Andy used to say.

Second, Vic has earned the forgiveness and trust for what he's accomplished here.

Man two games in and the hate levels are thru the roof with two nice early wins in. This place is going to go bananas after the first loss. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

My title makes the point succinctly and opens a discussion. By the way it's a discusison you haven't participated in. You've posted two replies and said absolutely nothing about the issue in the trread.

So are you saying you are happy with the defense giving up several second half leads last year up to and including the playoff game and then continuing the trend this year with the same players and coaches? I wish I had your rose colored glasses.

Check the latter part of the season last year including the playoff game - they gave up more second half leads than they held

The snap counts of those games illuminated a huge part of the pattern/issue that you are ignoring. Patulloโ€™s Offense was so inept that the Defense was getting very short rest between series and they eventually wore down. There was very little that Fangio could do about that.

I'm not ignoring it. When the offense struggles the defense has to pck them up. That didn't happen and Vic is getting a pass on any responsibility. If our illustrious DC couldn't figure it out, counter it, or develop sufficient depth then why is he St. Vic?

Time of Possession can be a very real factor in a game.....when an offense struggles each and every game, the defense is tasked with keeping the team in the game......but it's a known fact that defenses can wear down, especially against a team the has a strong running game or an elusive QB......When defense has to constantly play on short fields, or 3 and outs by the offense, fatigue becomes a factor....

And, In today's NFL where the rules are skewed to the offense, the best defenses still give up points......but there are times in a game where superior defenses can make a handful of plays that can tip the game into their favor......a sack taking a team out of field goal range, a 3rd or 4th down stop, a turnover, or a blocked field goal/extra point......or tight red zone defense.

Not to mention, personal that have been lost or new players brought in. The eagles lost Blankenship, a starter, and Makuba came back from injury......lost Nakobe Dean and Campbell is still developing.....Dejean and Carter have been playing hurt.....Greenard STILL hasn't played.....

You might dismiss this as "excuses".....but they are very real concerns that may cause some poor play.

I think that these things can explain how a top 5 defense can get dominated in some games.......but it also can highlight how a good defense can keep a team in a game even if they gave up some scoring drives.

The last thing is that the last game really isn't an indicator of what a defense will do the next game. DCs watch endless amount of tape, see small mistakes and make constant adjustments. The eagles won 2 games by thin margins.......and those margins came from plays the defense made.

Another week of piss poor defense. No turnovers or sacks. Fun times with this s defense.

In short - if there is one person on this staff that is capable of quickly turning things around it is Vic

Tackling has been poor (no preaseason)........guys up front have underperformed (they were on a field that read 150 degrees)......so far we lack that physical image, need to get that back

It's early - no panic for the defense

Time to panic
