Don't know what the answer is

And for the people that can't pay the fine and don't want to go into recovery?

This might not be the right answer but what we’ve been doing clearly doesn’t work.

Now is doing this just doing something for the sake of doing something ? It could turn out that way but it’s worked really well for Portugal and at least it’s all the way in Oregon. Keep that sheet on the west side if it goes bad.

I get what you're saying and, honestly, I probably agree.

But it always grates me a little hearing about "mass incarceration" - when it comes down to it that only happens because people won't stop committing crimes.

If you know something's against the law, don't do it and you won't get incarcerated. Everybody makes mistakes, but you don't have to make the same mistake 500 times.

If only it was that simple and straightforward, but it definitely isn't especially when dealing with inner cities.

What do they consider to be small amounts?

Only small amounts of drugs are decriminalized, such as less than 1 gram of heroin or MDMA; 2 grams of cocaine or methamphetamine; 12 grams of psilocybin mushrooms; and 40 doses of LSD, oxycodone or methadone.

40 doses of LSD?

I think I'll cross Oregon off the list of places I ever want to move to.

Great, they can take all the drug addicts. Think about it- if the blue states become their own countries, they can fail all on their own

Is this official? Shouldn't oxycodone be measured in mgs?

Yeah, California and NY are really struggling.

Did you miss Cali's governor pleading with (the rich) people not to leave the state?

And NY is definitely headed in the wrong direction.

Not that Philly is doing any better...

So is the government going to pay for rehab?

Supposedly off the tax revenue from the drugs. Fully completing the circle.

They won’t fail because they end the drug war.

Not the ideal situation but it will be much cheaper than the war on drugs and incarcerating people for victimless crimes.

War on drugs has been a complete failure.

Releasing people who merely possessed a few ounces of pot 3 times in their life (3-strike nonsense) is a very good idea. Releasing addicts of more harmful drugs so they can not work, steal your stuff, and harm you if they deem it necessary to get what they need, is not such a good idea. The crimes related to drugs are mostly related to addiction. The only way to eliminate the drug related crime is to make the drugs free and available 24/7/365 to any who want it. then again, if Oregon wants to be the drug addict capitol of the USA, I say go for it!

Legalize all the drugs you want.  Just don't demand taxpayer $$$ to fund rehab and overdose hospitalizations.  I'm not paying for your habit.

Now that Portugal’s decriminalization process is over a decade old, there are several long-term benefits that have been recognized, including the following:

Substance abuse and addiction rates have been cut in half since decriminalization

Addiction treatment and rehabilitation is less expensive than incarceration

Individuals with substance abuse problems are much more likely to find recovery in rehab than in jail

People completing treatment can become productive members of society much more easily than convicted felons

Violence related to drug trafficking is greatly reduced

Courts are freed up for other important work

The rebellious, countercultural essence of drug use is changed when society sees it as a disease and not a crime

But you are OK on paying billions of dollars a year on enforcement and incarceration?
