The reason many businesses pay zero tax is because dope politicians try to use the tax code to incentivize things -- R&D tax credits, accelerated depreciation, green energy, marriage, kids, etc. We need to accept a simple truth -- the people writing tax policy are much dumber than the people paying taxes. Put all these credit and deductions in the system, and large companies and smart individuals will use them to minimize or eliminate their taxes. Stop blaming the companies/people and start blaming the idiots who write the laws. 🤙
October 6, 20214 yr The argument over taxes is a construct. It shouldn't even be a thing. It's a construct of the people who say the government HAS to continue to keep spending. Reducing entitlement and military spending is not a fight that we should just give up on. End social security and pay back those who've payed into it. Scale down Medicare so the only people drawing against it are the oldest, most vulnerable. And stop fighting wars. Then we can start talking about tax reform.

Then we can start talking about tax reform. While I agree, none of this can actually happen. We have passed the tipping point -- so few people actually pay the bill for these things, so the masses just keep demanding more and more "free" stuff. I'd support ending social security right now and don't even need my money back -- just stop taxing me. I'd end Medicare and Medicaid tomorrow as well. But no one gets elected telling voters that they need to be responsible for their own lives. They get elected by giving them someone to blame. The 1%, illegal immigrants...it's just who you want to make the scapegoat. EDIT: And it's only going to continue to get worse. Yet another reason I don't have children.

October 7, 20214 yr They made the announcement today. It seems my loans may actually be forgiven this time. Though it looks like it might take months for them to look through all the previously rejected applications and make it right. As of this moment I still have a balance.

And you're left with nothing, or just your basic exemptions. Most people who are on the hook for student loan debts and can't pay it back don't have any assets to speak of, and don't have enough money to pay it back. If you were broke and lost your house, you'd be in the same boat as them. Why should you be able to discharge your debts in a bankruptcy and they can't? You're both broke. Those that can pay back the student loan debts shouldn't be able to wipe them out. But if somebody's neck deep in student loan debt and they're broke with no income, why shouldn't that debt be dischargeable in bankruptcy when other debts like medical bills are credit cards and other loans are?
October 7, 20214 yr Not a fan of student loan forgiveness, but college is too expensive. I support making public universities free (at least the tuition). Not enough folks learn critical thinking skills in high school anymore unfortunately. If you’re questioning why pursuing a college education is a good idea I submit this graph.

So the idea is to let K-12 continue to suck and tack on a few years of additional expense and time to get the job done?

I'm the first one that will champion the benefits if of a higher education and your graph bears that out. I also think a lot of that is due to the fact that kids (especially boys), even as they're entering into college, are still developing and maturing. Our daughter was pretty much Miss I.N.D.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.T. with full formed political persuasions, a job, and a plan by the time she was moving into her college dorm. Whereas with me, I can honestly say I wasn't a fully functioning adult until I hit 27.

Easy. In one word: collateral the bank takes the house and sells it to cover their loss or least some of it. no collateral on the school loan as a mechanism to discharge.

Correlation not causation. the problem is stupid parents raising stupid kids. Not what we spend on education

The disparity between republicans and democrats with a college degree is massive in that graph. It should terrify all of us that one third of college educated republicans choose party loyatly over their own health and that of their friends/family. Absolute insanity.
