November 9, 20213 yr To be honest - I'm fortunate, I dont pay for fuel, I make more than enough to handle even the highest inflation, and am older with everything paid off, and a strong portfolio. I could retire now and live as well as I do now, even with the inflation. I feel for those who can't afford the inflation. Those younger and less fortunate people who live paycheck to paycheck, trying to get a head. And honestly, while the economy is good now, with the inflation being what it is, when all businesses get through with their increases/adjustments, people will start buying less, and the economy will slide. (best time to invest chunks into the market, I have already moved money to safer markets to wait for the impending slide) This will hurt buinesses for a while. So it wont affect me much, other than I may postpone any large purchases (not really contemplating any at this time).   Â
November 9, 20213 yr Author Thoughts?  Quote Automakers must soon install tech in new cars that can detect and stop drunk drivers, Congress says Carmakers must install technology in new vehicles to detect and stop drunk drivers as part of a requirement included in President Joe Biden's $1 trillion infrastructure bill, AP first reported on Tuesday. The legislation says the new technology must "passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired" and "prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if an impairment is detected." The Transportation Department is expected to decide on the most suitable technology to install in vehicles, and carmakers will then be given time to comply, AP reported. The technology could roll out in all new cars as soon as 2026, according to AP's report. House lawmakers on Friday approved the $1 trillion infrastructure bill, which Biden is expected to sign soon. Technology that can detect a drunk driver could prevent more than 9,400 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities per year, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which was cited in the 2,702-page bill. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated in October that 20,160 people died in car crashes in the first half of 2021 — the highest number of fatalities in the first half of a year since 2006, it said. The agency says on its website that one third of all traffic collisions in the US involve drunk drivers, adding that more than 10,000 people died every year over a 10-year period between 2010 and 2019 because of drunk-driving crashes. The tech "will virtually eliminate the No. 1 killer on America's roads," Alex Otte, national president of advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving, told AP. https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-mandates-drunk-driving-tech-carmakers-biden-infrastructure-bill-2021-11?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=sf-bi-main&fbclid=IwAR0sWnMuu_mMxRmHyrzZC1IFKVHc3JECbLF6mSx0Vg59YnbbqMCwXabbemE   Â
November 9, 20213 yr I think manufacturers are already putting some soft version of this sort of thing in their vehicles already. My car has a "driver alertness" detection system that ostensibly determines how much I'm paying attention on the road. It's not very good honestly. I've only seen it throw up a warning a couple of times and when it did I was fully attentive - I was driving on a windy road that required full attention. Maybe that I was taking the turns a bit hard triggered the alert, but what's the fun of windy roads with good visibility if I can't stomp the gas and have a little fun?
November 9, 20213 yr Depends on how costly and inconvenient it is for the rest of us that are responsible drivers.
November 9, 20213 yr That's utterly ridiculous. If the technology is wrong and prevents a sober person from driving...
November 9, 20213 yr We have something in our MINI that alerts whenever paco is driving.. like a "hey do you need to stop and get a coffee". It's never gone off while I've been driving because I'm an excellent motorist.

Well if that comes to pass you can blame our slowest runners, like @lynched1 that think driving to work drunk is awesome, for slowing the rest of society down.

Creating a hinderance for everyone because a few people is irresponsible is ridiculous policy. Like keeping mask mandates.

None of my cars have that feature, but I have rented cars that suggested I take a nap / rest. I occasionally have trouble staying between the lines though…

I agree, but I'm not sure it's "a few people" who regularly drive drunk. For the record I'm against adding these types of things to cars at this time.

If said device used passive detection only, added less than $10 of cost to the vehicle, and had less than a 0.01% false reject rate, that's one thing. But if it's $100, requires you to breathe into a tube every time you start your vehicle and still locks you out incorrectly when you're already late for work? Ya, F that ish, cuz.

I mostly drink heavy at home anyway (football, by the pool, etc). My wife is a one drink person when she is out so if we are together she pretty much will always drive home and I'll have a few extra.

I very rarely drink. If I do, it's a night out with the guys and I'm getting toasted and getting an Uber. When out to dinner with the wife, I invariably drink more of the wine and she drives home.
