June 9, 20223 yr I’m not defending Pierce and Buchanan, but there’s not really anything those guys could’ve done. I mean, yes, Pierce was enforcing the new fugitive slave law that was very unpopular in the North. But Congress is the one who passed that unpopular law.

So we didn't really concede much by dismantling them. He should have listened to someone else instead of authorizing the Bay of Pigs invasion.

Pierce started the fire with the fugitive slave law and then Buchanan threw gas on it with his intervention in the Dred Scott case right before he was elected. He supposedly did not believe in slavery but was wishy-washy on the subject and decided that inaction was the best course of action. Then he completely screwed the pooch on Fort Sumter and did nothing about the secession of Southern states. His reasoning for nonaction? Because there was nothing he could do. The civil war falls clearly on his shoulders because he was a terrible leader.

Buchanan did intervene in the Dred Scott case, but that’s because he wanted to settle the most pressing political issue of the day. In hindsight it’s obviously hilarious. I agree they were poor leaders, but it’s hard to picture an outcome that doesn’t involve war. That was going to happen after Kansas/Nebraska led to so much violence.

That was going to happen after Kansas/Nebraska led to so much violence. I mean you could argue that the war was going to happen regardless, but even Bleeding Kansas was a mess because of the actions he took. Accepting the Lecompton Constitution and then trying to force his parties hand to accept it, hook, line, and sinker led to so much more tension there than was necessary. The one thing I find funny about Buchanan is his reasoning for slavery even though he was against it. He basically thought that if the slaves were freed, they would then take over the country and become the people that ran everything, basically replacing the white people. Here we are more than 250 years later and you have a group of people pushing the same rhetoric, except instead of slavery it is immigration. The more things change the more they do remain the same.
