We're all living with it, Biden is nowhere close to the POTUS Trump was

Trumps popularity at this point is directly tied to Bidens abject and inarguable failure.  Trump would be off the radar if Biden didnt keep him relevant, he makes Trump look better every day and that is a fact.

  • While I disagree with Biden trying to save these idiots from themselves, it just proves what a wonderful human being he is. IMO we should encourage Trumpbots to all give each other Covid so they die o

US coal use in 2021 was still lower than 2019.

Carbon emissions were also lower in 2021 vs 2019.

The article - even the full article with full context - is just straight lying.

Emissions and energy use overall dropped over 10% in 2020. When people started moving again in 2021 they went back up, but still were below 2019 levels continuing the earlier trends if reduced coal consumption and reduced CO2 emissions overall.

I live in NC.  You obviously haven't been to NC in a long time or ever.  It is easily the most diverse state I have lived in since MD.  And like most states, where most of the population resides is where most of the democrats are.  Charlotte, Greensboro, RDU ect....At least the part I live in.  Central and Western PA has more backwards ass rednecky tendencies and is as red as NC is now.

Odd thing about down here.  Before I moved here I thought it was just NASCAR and College Hoops... But I never hear anything about NASCAR and college hoops is not as much of a passion as one would think.  So many northerners down here, changing the culture, I guess.

I lived there for a while. I moved from PA, hated it and moved back to PA. It's a 3rd world red neck backwards arse ish hole. I agree about central PA, but I live in the Philly burbs. When I was in NC the closest major metropolitan area (if you can call it that) was Raleigh which was 2 and a half hours away. Before moving ot NC I thought it was how you described. After living there for 2 years I thought it was every bit as bad as Alabama or Mississippi. Not much diversity. All southern fried racist red necks.

I get a huge beach house almost every summer in NC for a week and my four along with most of my wifes family go for vacation. It's nice for that but I wouldn't live there for the reasons you just described.

We lived right by the beach. The only things I liked about living there were spending every weekend on the beach, and buying just caught seafood on the docks on our way home then cooking it up. The beaches are gorgeous, but yeah living there not so much. Because the republicans run everything, they made a deal with the local pharama company. They donate millions to gop campaigns, and in return the government lets them dump their toxic waste into the Cape Fear river. There were weeks where we were told not to drink the water from our taps and to not even brush our teeth with it. I honestly didn't think that happened in the US. This is one of the reasons I'm hoping that loon running for governor in PA doesn't win. He wants to do the same thing.

I know you are joking, but your post should show just how stupid the "I did that” sticker crowd is.  It’s Usually the mental midgets that don’t understand how our economy works.

Not a lot of people know that "Usually" is a proper noun. Just shows how stupid the "I'm going to use the lower case version of usually in a sentence" crowd is.

Nobody is taking grammar lessons from you, imbecile.

Anyway.

Gas prices are going down. Weird since there wasn't a bunch of oil drilling or deregulation, which idiots here seem to think are the only variables in the equation.

I'm actually curious why they're going down. Demand destruction may be some of it, but late June/July are big months for demand at the pump as people go on the road for the summer.

Personally I think prices just overshot demand.. in the near term aftermath of Russia's invasion and subsequent sanctions, there was a lot of scrambling so prices got a bit out of control. Now they're finding the equilibrium.

If true, it probably means a sustained price drop isn't in the cards. The US still needs a few high volume refineries. There's a crapload of desert that could be put to use. Hell throw up some nuclear plants next to refineries in some remote areas and demonstrate what a bridge to a post fossil fuel world looks like.

Crude oil prices have dropped very quickly over the last few weeks:

image.thumb.png.26a377226afa1869bf7c2cdf03553d4c.png

At the same time, refining margins (crack spreads) have also dropped:

image.thumb.png.3364fa7b5e8b030960ddc4bdbbda7366.png

So it's a double whammy of input prices (crude) dropping at the same time that the profit margins are coming in. The reason for both is mainly just market flows and liquidity. A ton of investors, mainly HFs, piled into energy names in Q2, and that is exacerbating the move down as everyone scrambles to get out. The energy related companies are still making record profits, but a bunch of the speculative premium has come out. That's happening because of (i) a MASSIVE reduction in inflation expectations, (ii) anticipated demand destruction due to the Fed raising rates and (iii) her behavior by hedge funds.

Check out this graph of 2 year inflation expectations...per usual the talking points of politicians are stale:

Crude price drops usually lead pump price drops by quite a bit though do they not?

And are you saying futures were actually expecting sustained inflation in the 7-8% range? That seems ... dumb.

At the peak, 2 year inflation expectations were 5%. Which is bananas.

The reason for the quick reaction is the drop in crack spreads. That's the profit margin over the crude price for refiners. Usually when crude drops, prices drop slowly and crack spreads increase -- it's been the opposite this time. That's coming from speculation in gasoline and expected demand destruction -- the supply is unchanged or even a little higher, and the summer demand just isn't there.

Basically, everyone leaned one way starting in late March, and now they've all been caught.

Do you think oil prices shot up at a level that was briefly met by a scrambling irrational market but unsustainable, and that the market is meeting some equilibrium? Or is that a naive view?

Ok that's kinda what I was trying to communicate. Probably badly.

Edit: rereading more closely, maybe not quite. But I get it. Makes sense.
