Science forbid that the focus be on individuals instead of corporations. Let's spend it on stuff that benefits all of us: infrastructure projects; jobs programs; single payor health care; education. Sure, I don't care. Just pointing out how flawed and ridiculous your logic is to print more money to give to people because we're a "rich country" when we're already spending trillions more than we've brought in.

Xi defended China’s policies as matters of sovereignty, but told the US leader confrontation would be "a disaster”, and called for the two sides to re-establish the means to avoid misjudgments, according to state media. The call came just hours after the announcement of Biden’s establishment of a Pentagon task force on China and a senior state department official meeting in person with Taiwan’s representative to the US. The US’s support for Taiwan, which is fending off aggression and threats of "unification” from Beijing, is one of the most sensitive issues in the US-China relationship, and one raised by Biden during the call. "I spoke today with President Xi to offer good wishes to the Chinese people for lunar new year,” said Biden. "I also shared concerns about Beijing’s economic practices, human rights abuses, and coercion of Taiwan. I told him I will work with China when it benefits the American people.” A White House account of the conversation said Biden also raised the crackdown in Hong Kong and human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and China’s "increasingly assertive actions in the region”. They also discussed global health security, climate change, and preventing weapons proliferation, the White House said. Chinese state media said the two leaders had "exchanged greetings on the occasion of the Chinese New Year, and had an in-depth exchange of views on the bilateral relationship and major international and regional issues”. Xi also warned Biden to cautiously handle matters like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Xinjiang, which he said were "internal affairs” about China’s territorial integrity. An account of the call given by state media said Xi reiterated that cooperation was "the only correct choice” and the two countries need to properly manage disputes in a constructive manner. ... The Biden administration has pledged to continue giving "rock solid” support for Taiwan, and has predicted "extreme competition” between the two countries. He has suggested he will draw on his familiarity with Xi from his time as vice-president. Ahead of the Xi call a senior administration official briefed reporters that the Biden team had "found merit” in the Trump administration’s "basic proposition of an intense strategic competition with China … but we found deep problems with the way in which the Trump administration went about that competition,” Axios reported.
February 11, 20214 yr Biden making a phone call really showed them https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-55794071 Tursunay Ziawudun spent nine months inside China's vast and secretive system of internment camps in the Xinjiang region. According to independent estimates, more than a million men and women have been detained in the sprawling network of camps, which China says exist for the "re-education" of the Uighurs and other minorities. Human rights groups say the Chinese government has gradually stripped away the religious and other freedoms of the Uighurs, culminating in an oppressive system of mass surveillance, detention, indoctrination, and even forced sterilisation. The policy flows from China's President, Xi Jinping, who visited Xinjiang in 2014 in the wake of a terror attack by Uighur separatists. Shortly after, according to documents leaked to the New York Times, he directed local officials to respond with "absolutely no mercy". The US government said last month that China's actions since amounted to a genocide. China says reports of mass detention and forced sterilisation are "lies and absurd allegations". First-hand accounts from inside the internment camps are rare, but several former detainees and a guard have told the BBC they experienced or saw evidence of an organised system of mass rape, sexual abuse and torture.

No -- but I feel we live in a society, where we all contribute to the general welfare. Taxes for roads, schools, etc. Unless you want to pay zero taxes (which isn't gonna happen), you are just arguing about where tax dollars should go. I would rather expand the social safety net for you and I and everyone else (ya know -- people) - as opposed to corporate welfare for Exxon and the like. Take your pick. I would gladly pay a few more in taxes to lift all boats. Man it would really suck if we had single payor health care. OMG how horrible would that be. Gee, it would be sooo awful. I love getting incomprehensible statements from my health insurer who negotiates secret contracts with certain groups of providers (yes, try to find out the terms) and then if you hit by a bus and taken to some out of network hospital, they zing you for "out of network" -- plus don't forget the deductible + out of pocket + co-pay (all different names to confuse the consumer). Its a joke. And I have great health care via my employer -- still in favor of a real single payor system (not the for profit insurance company system we have now).

February 12, 20214 yr https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/02/i-will-destroy-you-biden-aide-threatened-a-politico-reporter-pursuing-a-story-on-his-relationship MEDIA "I WILL DESTROY YOU”: BIDEN AIDE THREATENED A POLITICO REPORTER PURSUING A STORY ON HIS RELATIONSHIP A Deputy Press Secretary TJ Ducklo lashed out at journalist Tara Palmeri, spurring conversations between Politico’s brass and the White House—and raising questions about behavior tolerated in the Biden administration. White House official tried to quash a story about his relationship with a reporter by issuing threats and using derogatory language to another reporter pursuing it, according to two sources familiar with the incident. In a sympathetic profileMonday, People revealed that White House Deputy Press Secretary TJ Ducklo is dating Axios political reporter Alexi McCammond, who covered the Joe Bidencampaign. But behind the scenes, Ducklo had previously lashed out at Politico reporter Tara Palmeri, who was reporting the story, exhibiting behavior that led to tense meetings between the Washington news outlet’s editors and senior White House officials. After Vanity Fair published this account, the White House announced that Ducklo would be suspended for one week. The confrontation began on Inauguration Day, January 20, after Palmeri, a coauthor of Politico’s Playbook, contacted McCammond for comment while one of her male colleagues left a message for Ducklo, according to the sources. Ducklo subsequently called a Playbook editor to object to the story, but was told to call the Playbook reporters with his concerns. But instead of calling the male reporter who initially contacted him, Ducklo tried to intimidate Palmeri by phone in an effort to kill the story. "I will destroy you,” Ducklo told her, according to the sources, adding that he would ruin her reputation if she published it. The following day, an editor at Politico reached out to the White House about Ducklo’s threats, spurring multiple conversations between the news outlet and senior-level officials on January 21, including White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki,White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield, and Biden senior adviser Anita Dunn. In one of those calls, senior White House officials acknowledged that Ducklo’s handling of the call with Palmeri was inappropriate and said he would send a note to her apologizing for the comments. In another conversation, the same White House officials took aim at Palmeri by accusing her of breaking an off-the-record agreement with Ducklo and pressing Politico as to why the contents of the call had been revealed. Palmeri had only informed her editors of the contents of the call, which she had transcribed into her notes as it was happening, after they asked her about it. Palmeri declined to comment. Psaki and Ducklo did not immediately respond to requests for comment. After publication, Psaki issued a statement: "TJ Ducklo has apologized to the reporter, with whom he had a heated conversation about his personal life. He is the first to acknowledge this is not the standard of behavior set out by the President. In addition to his initial apology, he has sent the reporter a personal note expressing his profound regret. With the approval of the White House Chief of Staff, he has been placed on a one-week suspension without pay. In addition, when he returns, he will no longer be assigned to work with any reporters at Politico.” When the series of calls between the White House and Politico had concluded, Ducklo sent Palmeri an email stating that he was sorry he lost his cool, but he did not delve into any specifics or apologize for threatening and sexually harassing the reporter, according to sources familiar with the exchange. Politico reported on Ducklo and McCammond’s relationship in Tuesday’s Playbook, after it was first revealed the previous night by People. Ducklo’s alleged response to Politico’s reporting raises serious questions about behavior that is tolerated in the Biden White House. "I am not joking when I say this: If you are ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot. No ifs, ands, or buts,” Biden saidduring a virtual swearing-in of appointees on his first day in the White House. Playbook highlighted those remarks on January 21 under the heading "Biden Sets Standard for Professional Behavior,” and asked, "Serious question on our minds this morning: Does this standard apply to how mid-level press aides treat reporters?” This article was updated with the White House comment on Ducklo’s one-week suspension.
