I've done NYC to Boston on Amtrak (Acela) or to Washington DC. Would never go any further than that. Philly to Boston is much better by train. Getting on a train is so easy. You don't have to get there 2 hours before boarding, no security, no waiting for runway clearance, waiting for luggage. It's actually faster to take the train.
