Jalen Hurts - shoulder sprain injury; expected for playoffs

Featured Replies

I'd love for Siri to cut way back on the RPO stuff and run a more traditional offense. Let Hurts take his 3 or 5 step drops and let it rip, while obviously mixing in some runs. They can add the RPO or QB option back in once he is processing the field faster because those illegal man downfeild flags are at times Hurts' fault.

I think he'll be OK, maybe a bit better than average. They can win with a QB like that if the team is built properly.

Doesn’t matter who’s the QB if the Oline can’t block, the WR’s can’t get open, the coaches can’t coach and the GM can’t identify talent.

  • So we had to listen to an entire week of "He runs too much".   What will the talking points be this week?  Jalen and this Team can win in multiple ways.  Stop trying to put him in some box where he on

Baldy - short discussion on Hurts. Basically states he is not an NFL QB and is aksing the question can he become one and do all that NFL QB's have to do......

This is a pretty good time to check in on how Hurts is doing because his snap count right now is about the same as it was after his first season.

First, his numbers from his rookie year.

Snaps - 334, Total Yards - 1,115, TDs - 9, Turnovers - 6. Yards per attempt passing - 7.2, Completion percentage - 52.

And now this year.

Snaps - 328, Total Yards - 1,626, TDs - 10, Turnovers - 3, Yards per passing attempt - 7.5, Completion percentage - 64.8.

The improvement is pretty obvious.

Now, the mitigating factors are that he went into the season as a starter rather than as a mid-season replacement. And I would argue that his receivers this year have been much better than those last year with the addition of Smith and the fact that Reagor and Watkins have more experience. There is also the argument that he has two games where he put up "garbage time" stats.

On the other hand, he is learning a new system and arguably his weakest category, TDs, has been hurt by four pretty obvious mistakes that weren't his fault. So if you fault him for garbage time stats, you have to credit him for TDs wiped out by bad mistakes outside of his control. There is also the constant changes on the offensive line, which has hurt him. Landon Dickerson being terrible hasn't been a great help to the cause.

Ultimately, it seems like he is trending in the right direction. If he can continue this level of production for the rest of the season, is there really any question about whether or not he can be a franchise qb? And I don't expect his performances to get worse. In his five games so far, two of them were against top 10 defenses (Panthers and 49ers.) We only face two top 10 defenses (in terms of yards allowed) the rest of the season (Raiders and the Broncos.) So 10 out of the final 12 games will be against mediocre or poor defenses (at least so far in the season.)

That's a scheme problem more than over usage, IMO.  Like I said earlier, when Reid did the same things (and still does), his play design allowed it to be continuously effective.  Steichen and Siri needs to figure that out, because you are 100% right that many of them were immediately stuffed.

I just think some of it is because there's no run game. I get that what they are doing is an extension of the run game but it isn't handing the ball off behind the LOS in the same way. Teams can't have to stack the box or even put anyone in the box really. The DEs can just get after the QB and not worry about overrunning the play which then has an impact on the throw from Hurts to the receiver.

Hurts is the leading runner on the team. Which doesn't impress me - it depresses me that they can't figure out how to get the most out of Sanders, Gainwell and Scott.

If he gets injured while running I hope the birds draft a good pocket passer. Maybe Kenny Pickett or Stetson Bennett.

Jalen could end up having one of the most prolific seasons statically in Eagles History if he continues at this pace.  His combined yards are ridiculous already.

Empty stats.  I was told in this very blog the only thing that matters is how many points are scored.  Eagles are 17th.

Look of course Wins are the biggest stat, but production for a young QB does mean something.  Jalen is on pace to break the single season passing record for the team if he keeps up.  As for PPG, yes that's important but we have had 5 TD's called back too.   That clearly effected our PPG this year.    Nobody saying he's a finished product but I can see the growth already.

Good for you, I do not see it.

Breaking the Eagles single season passing record doesn't say much considering it took until 2019 to break 4,000 yards. If he did that on a team like the Packers who have had amazing QBs forever sure then I would say oh great. Also doing it on a team that only hands the ball off like 5 times a game just means they are forced passing yards.

Donovan would have shattered the 4000 yard mark in 2004 if he wasn’t shut down after the opening drive in STL in the 2nd to last game. I believe he was 125 yards shy that year. At the very least, he’d likely still be comfortably ahead of Wentz right now, and while it may have been broken this year, I agree Hurts’ numbers are likely going to be a reflection of almost never running the ball.

Agreed about McNabb, I was just making the point we haven't exactly had prolific passers as a franchise. So Hurts breaking the single season passing record while a decent accomplishment for a second year guy isn't that impressive when you consider the team he is on and the history.

Yup. I’m agreeing with you. ;)

Sorry, I forgot what that looked like on here lol

Hurts will get a chance to pad his stats again today.  Fine by me for my fantasy team.  Too bad it doesn't relate to much in real life....we have seen it too many times already.

Another bad throw.....

He’s been BRUTAL tonight. Just…… brutal.

DUMB AND INACCURATE. He can run some though.....and that's just...

Sliding for a one yard loss instead of just throwing it away.  Running out of bounds to stop the clock before halftime, leaving the Bucs more time.

Zero football IQ.

He rolls to the right way too much even when he shouldn't leave the pocket

The only thing I can surmise is that the coaching staff is trying to evaluate Hurts as a passer with him throwing so much.

but man….. Hurts can’t read the field for anything. Presnap and post snap, he’s been BRUTAL. And on the few times he doesn’t bail on a good clean pocket (for no good reason) his throws are late. His timing is bad. I think that’s why they throw 50 wr screens a game.

and from what I’ve seen, he hasn’t gotten any better since week 2.

i think the only way you can get hurts to lead a team to victory is to be a dominant running team and have hurts throw the ball 15-18x a game. 20, max.

Noodle arm with several under thrown balls again tonight. Wtf does he wait so long to throw week after week? What exactly do they talk about in the film room? Same crap different game. It's sucks watching Reagor, Smith, and Watkins running wide open week after week only for them to have to slow down to attempt an under throw and late pass.

Good kid. Likeable guy. Unfortunately not a starting qb in the NFL.

That's why I'm still not all down on Reagor. He has had pathetic qb play in his career in the NFL so far. He does run lazy routes but can get open more often than not.

This throw sums up the whole game:
