This brought me back to my kid's elementary school math teacher.... I got to the point I had a conference with the teacher about the commutative law of addition and multiplication. I still don't get her reasoning for marking it incorrect.

This is what happens when you have elementary school teachers who don't really "understand" mathematics teaching it from a prescribed curriculum and resources. These are people who can "do the basics", but since they don't really understand the content they are slaves to their answer keys- they're trying to teach methodology to help develop understanding when they don't possess the understanding themselves. In my opinion one of the biggest failings in our educational system is the lack of focus on subject specialists (especially in math) in the elementary grades, but I'll get off of my soapbox since, yeah, this a meme thread...

Sounds terrible. You must live in a sheet school district. My kids have some really good teachers. They’ve also had a couple of bad ones. Come to think of it I’ve worked with some great people, but also some turds. I guess schools really do prepare students for life.

Don’t misinterpret what I’m saying here… this isn’t emblematic of anything going on in my district, but every time you see someone who grades a problem like this in this way (which I’ve honestly only ever seen on the internet) it illustrates a lack of conceptual understanding on their part. I guess that my statement is more of a generalization that I feel that every elementary school out there should have math specialists (or even math coaches to work with the existing staff), because there are plenty of elementary teachers who are fabulous teachers but don’t have a strong level of comprehension of how mathematics works, and that can have deleterious effects on the future achievement of those students.

I hope that every student has many great teachers and not too many turds, but like you said there are turds in every aspect of life. No matter what group of people you talk about, some of them are "the worst” in that group.

BTW, just for reference, I am a high school mathematics teacher with over 25 years of experience, mostly teaching AP Calculus, but plenty of other things over the years as well, and have been the head of my hs department for 16 years. I am also a taxpayer in the district and my children attended there (although it’s been a "few” years since they graduated).

Yeah, public education obviously isn’t perfect, but I personally think the majority of the outrage and reason people say stuff like:

”every time you see someone who grades a problem like this in this way (which I’ve honestly only ever seen on the internet)”

is because there is lobby group pushing for privatization of public schools because of the massive amount of money they feel they can profit from it.
