Who the F knows. I only ever use setting 1. I've yet to meet anyone that uses anything above a 2.

mine goes up to 10, I use 5. 

my kids use 1. it lightly toasts it but it still looks untoasted/white.

at 5 it's toasted and has darkened, but isn't close to black.

I use the highest setting, but I use the toaster for bagels and prefer the bagels pretty burnt.
