Yes, they are imperfect and badly in need of being reformed/redesigned, but they are an extremely useful tool for getting a snapshot of how students can demonstrate knowledge and apply a wide range of skills that are generally applicable to college curricula. Dropping them altogether will do a disservice to both the colleges and the students, as it will make it harder to admit and place applicants in the schools and programs that best fit their needs and talents, and it will put a lot of unprepared students in precarious academic situations where they are at risk of failure. What really gets me is that this debate about the utility of these tests has been going on since I was in high school 20 years ago, but it seems that the effort to drop them has really gained traction recently since the "tests are racist" crowd gained prominence.

A new European Sales Manager reached out to me and asked me what was the secret to me having such a good Q4 and I told him that I didn't take the entire Summer off.... I don't think German people understand sarcasm 🤣

But that's not really what this is... MIT temporarily suspended the use of SAT/ACT scores when Covid hit due to the College Board shutting down testing for a while, and potential applicants not having access to testing- they certainly can't require testing when a large number of potential applicants can't take the test. If nothing else this is MIT saying that the College Board's testing availability has returned to a state where it is closer to normalcy. This is certainly the case- the AP exams two years ago were a farce, but it appears that they will be completely back to normal this year. I am also one of the educators (I think that there are more than you think) who believes dropping them is a poor idea. Yes, they are an imperfect measure, but they are probably the best way to compare two students with otherwise similar profiles from two different schools. Maybe I'm biased about this issue though, because I always got pretty solid scores on those types of tests. Of course that was a long, long time ago.
