i will debate this image till my death. you cannot tell me that getting into the correct lane half a mile before the merge point, while maitaining my speed, backs up traffic more than everyone having to slow down at the merge point to create room for other cars.

Have you ever used a funnel? If you pour your material in the top slowly enough, everything goes right through the bottom and nothing backs up. That's good, this is like no traffic, everything goes right through the merge at the same rate it enters. Now pour in a bit more, that's when things start backing up. Traffic backs up when there are more cars entering the roadway than it can move out. Now find the smaller port at the bottom of the funnel where everything starts merging together. Move this point up towards the top of the funnel. Is the funnel going to back up over the top quicker, or at the same rate, than when it was at the bottom?

I don't think it's a matter about time, whether it takes longer or shorter to go through the merge... So much it is about where do you want the backup located? Closer towards the merge point? Or do you want traffic backed up further back in the road?

ok, take your funnel and dump a 2 liter bottle in it as fast as you can, it over flows because everything is trying to get to the same spot first. thats what happens when everyone waits till the last minute.

take the graphic they show you, if those cars in the right hand lane merged half a mile before that point without altering their speed, but waiting until they found an opening, no one would have to slow down to let people in. where does the back up come from then? i get it if everyone is already stopped, then use both lanes. but that graphic leads me to believe that those cars are still moving up until the point of merge, thus creating a back up that didnt have to occur

A later merge provides more road space for the cars to utilize.  The earlier you merge, the sooner you are converting the road from 2 to 1 lanes and thus reducing the amount of roadway for cars to travel

yup, the a-holes that wait until the last minute are the ones that cause everyone else to have to jack their brakes

The backup occurs because too many cars are trying to fit into too small of an opening. It doesn't matter if they merge at the last point, or if they merge 1/2 mile back or further. The qeustion is, where do you want the backup to occur? At the point of the merge, or further back?

true, but if everyone has merged into the same line while maintaining the speed limit, and they did this because of ample warning time, then how would a back up occur?

The merge presents a barrier which causes cars to slow down....

However, I do theoretically agree with your point. If the road stretches back far enough, you could keep adding cars through the merge and they wouldn't have to slow down. You just have to keep moving the merge point further and further back as more cars and more cars approach the merge.... Unfortunately, the road ends at some point. If you get too many cars in too small an area, a backup occurs.

see, im not saying that everyone mergers at the same point. when youre on the highway and you see a "right lane ends 1 mile" then you have 3/4 of a mile to simple change lanes before anyone has to slow down. if everyone does that when they have the oppurtunity, then there is no single merge point, but a single file line moving at the speed limit.
