I remember reading about one guy who got sucked into the exhaust shafts with a f ton of water as the boat was sinking and water pouring in, got trapped there underwater momentarily, and then was blown back out when the boilers beneath the ship exploded. Insane.

Insane. My late uncle was on the Andrea Doria, and his story about it was wild. As a kid I couldn't really grasp the gravity of going through an ordeal like that when he would tell us all about it, but much like the dude in that Titanic interview, he still had PTSD from it decades later. He would joke about a lot of aspects of what happened but then a switch would flip and he'd suddenly get all serious and quiet and say he hadn't been in a swimming pool or even so much as taken a bath since then. And when the shower drain would start to clog and some of the water backed up at the bottom of the shower, he'd freak out and jump out before he was even finished. Then he'd have to spend a few minutes every day making sure the shower drain was clear before he'd take one.
