culturally I get there's a difference between a black african and a white one. bigger than the difference between a white and black American for sure.

but I wouldn't say that a black American is any less an American. nor should someone from "Africa" (which isn't even a country, so its identity is even MORE general than a national one) be gatekeeping about what makes an "African".

white south africans, "tan" Egyptians, french speaking indigenous (and also relatively light-skinned) Moroccans are all africans.
