It works when there is signage saying to use both lanes until merge point, then take your turn.

I've never seen that, the signs always start in advance saying to merge so that's what most people do early. They need to teach the zipper & show it on the signs.

Agreed. I've seen the "use both lanes" sign a couple times but not nearly enough, and they absolutely should teach the zipper.

In Germany I believe it's actually a traffic law. You can be fined for an early merge or not letting someone merge in a zipper. This should be codified.

When everyone knows what you're SUPPOSED to do, traffic can flow more efficiently. And it can be then taught from 16 on. You also need to ENFORCE these traffic laws and cite people regularly for violations.

You can't outlaw jerks but you can try to mitigate their behavior.

Hell I'd be ok with repeat offenders getting red stripes on their license plates or something indicating they done f'd up.

When they see the signs a couple miles in advance saying lane ends, merge they start doing it because they don't want to feel "stuck" later trying to push their way in or hope to be let in.  They think they're getting in the correct lane. Then anyone driving past on the right they feel is "cheating" and trying to get ahead.  I've seen people move their cars to the middle to not let people go down the right side.  They think they are the rule followers that stayed in the correct merged lane and the ones at the front are selfish and trying to get ahead.  They feel justified, like they obeyed and waited in that longer line and they're not going to let people in.  The signs don't indicate zipper, the signs say merge and move over.

Teach it on driving tests and put proper signs on the road and that might help.

I've seen his videos and he's funny but I never actually knew his name.  Social media keeps talking about him and I was like who is that? Then I saw one with his face and was like oh yeah that guy he's funny.

He's a stand up comedian, he's funny but so are lots of others.  I don't get the hype.

i have so many problems with this. fined for merging early and scarlet letter for doing it too many times are the biggest ones though

I place a very high value on efficiency. Much like the Germans. I just uhh.. don't want to go too far down that rabbit hole.

Maybe some vehicular version of this for those who fail to merge properly
