Howie knew the day of reckoning would come, and I'm sure he discussed it with Lurie, do we bite the bullet now or give it one more shot before we blow it up? Howie BLEW IT UP - meaning the cap... because his contract structures since 2017 have been horrific - see below. In 2016, Howie had some cap space to make good moves. He's in a $70M hole right now (and they would have been way over the cap even without Covid, so please spare me that line). Moving forward, the major moves aren't up for debate. They have to dump salary and hard. That's what happens when you are $70M over the cap. The question is how these moves are made, how they are structured and who's money they are playing with. Howie has overcommitted to aging players since coming back. You listed: Peters, Desean and Alshon as the guys that won't be around next year. And I say, they shouldn't have been here in 2020... shouldn't have been here in 2019 either for that matter. They should have been dumping some of these salaries starting in 2018 and 2019, and definitely before this season came up. They WAY overcommitted to the aging base of players, and overpaid for what they HAD done in the past. They gave up $20M to Foles for winning the Super Bowl. That's wonderful, and I'm glad they did it... because Nick earned it. BUT... in so doing, they couldn't afford to do it with a bunch of others as well... but they did. Sproles, Peters, etc. Let's consider Alshon Jeffery as a case study in how Howie has screwed this up. Alshon was brought here on a 1 year deal ($9.5M, great deal). Alshon they extended after 2017, ok... It was 4 years, $52M. That wasn't a bad contract (put a bit more into the 2017 year ~ $1M). It had $14M fully guaranteed, with $27M in total guarantees... If that contract plays out as it was set up, they could have moved on from Alshon at the end of the 2019 season, with a $1M injury settlement. (It works out to about $35M total earnings over the life of that contract, without the final year) He's gone for this year, freeing up his cap hit for the cost of $1M in 2020, and nothing carrying forward to 2021. But... Howie decided to get creative with the cap to free up a little more money. Before the 2019 season, right after they supposedly drafted his replacement (JJAW - which is another whole case against Howie and his drafting), he wants to free up money, so he extends Alshon beyond the 2020 season (which would have been the end). In doing so, he takes salary and pushes it to bonus money - not the worst thing, just spreads out the hit a little, but still didn't lock them in... but then he did the thing that did bite them in the rear end. He guaranteed his entire salary for 2019 and 2020. Now they couldn't get out of that contract anymore, unless they could trade him. So, that $9.9M salary for 2020 that they could have gotten rid of this year and just become no net hit to the cap for moving on from him... turned into an albatross. And the 'savings' for 2018 they gained, became double that amount on the cap in reality. Because Alshon took the salary he would have already gotten in 2018 and spread it over the contract... $10M. And they were on the hook for it either way. AND put themselves on the hook for $9.9M more. "Saved" ~$8M restructuring, but forced $9.9M more on to the cap... Now, Alshon is the third highest cap hit on the team in 2020... ($15.4M) and would be 3rd highest again in 2021... and would have been $10+M in dead money to cut, if not for the latest restructure pushing the money beyond 2021 and now into 2022. So, what would have been a 'simple' contract to get out of, Howie made worse, much worse - kicking the can to free up minimal money in 2019. 2021 became his dumping ground for dead money... and now a lot of it is going to spill over to 2022. If it spills into 2023, God help us all. In 2017, Howie made smart moves... 1 year contracts: Alshon, Patrick Robinson, LaGarrette Blount, Torry Smith (actually, 3 separate 1 year contracts), etc. 2 year contracts: Chris Long. Even in 2018, he did a 1 year contract with Mike Wallace, which failed miserably, but didn't cost the team beyond that year. Since then, Howie has done longer deals. Desean is a 3 year deal, we've gotten almost 0 production, and to get out of it they have to eat an additional $5M. Malik Jackson - 3 year deal, $30M contract (way too much for what he was producing before he came here, especially at his age...) but the structure was such that he would be guaranteed to be costing the team money for production he couldn't provide - dead money guaranteed on the cap for 2022 ($9M) after the contract expires. Brutal. Alshon's deal above. Compare that to the Chris Long deal, who was far more effective in his 2 years... cost a total of $6.25M (including $1.3M in dead space when he retired after 2018.) $6.25M total... versus a guaranteed $9M dead hit after the player is gone! Howie is too busy paying players for PAST performance, that they can't afford to pay any players for CURRENT performance. Howie changed how he operated, and I don't trust him to change back. But, even if he did... he still isn't the guy that should be drafting players. That track record alone is grounds for termination. Howie needs to be stopped... because it hasn't been about 'going for it'... its about how he's gone for it. He's gone for it with reckless contracts that kill the team's competitive chances when the QB that they hooked their wagon to was still very much in his prime. And while 'going for it', failed for 2 straight offseasons to provide him with any type of quality WRs to throw to. We knew going into 2019 season, they needed to upgrade... and we got old and busted WRs.... and JJAW. Then they really knew they needed to fix it for 2020... and got a raw athlete, and still relied on the old and busteds.

The way the Sixers managed that draft was a disaster and he never should have been a Sixer. With that being said, he's finally turning in to the player people thought. Philly sports and drafting as of late has been straight poop. Who is the last Phillies prospect they drafted, made it through the minors and actually became an every day Phillie? Bohm looking pretty good. Hoskins. Nola. Not a great track record but a few "hits" in there at least.

Realistically I see us signing some random QB coach from a Random decent level college. Someone who will never be that schools OC or HC but has a chance to make a name for himself. Ben McDaniel's(yes Josh's brother) Qb coach Michigan. Nah, there will always be the failed Rich Scangarello and Marty Mornhinwegs of the world. Shlubs that already failed and will do whatever for a paycheck.

January 7, 20214 yr Watson is amazing Carson isn’t, he got no help and still balled out, Carson did not.

Man I like Carson and dont want them to trade him. Rather they hire a different HC. But I swear to some of you it's like he can do no wrong. Everyone knows all the issues on offense as it's been repeated numerous times. All I'm saying is he needs to look in the mirror and ask how he can get better. Not just blame all his struggles on coaching, O-line and receivers.

Without Malik and then Hargrave, the defense implodes. Because Cox sees double teams and the other DT is neutralized, and the secondary is shredded. This is where trying to win with an old team backs you into a corner. DeSean was a decent contract, they never expect 16 games, but 10-12 games a year, and when he's on the field he was clearly the same player, just hasn't been able to stay on the field, but a healthy DeSean is still an elite deep threat (maybe the best in the NFL). Both Jeffrey and DeSean demonstrated why you never give money to WRs over 28 (except Fitzgerald).

We somehow are the worst in the entire league with YPA, and even still our completion percentage is league worst and sacks allowed is league worst. How is that even possible? We are throwing incomplete short passes and somehow still taking the most sacks. It's unfathomable.

Yards per attempt is going to drop with every incompletion, it doesn't mean you are always throwing short passes. The oline sucked, the WR's sucked and the QB's sucked. No time to throw, no receivers getting open and the qb's couldn't get them the ball adds up to a whole lot of suckage!
