There is this myth that a coaching search is about nailing the hot candidate - as history shows, the flavor of the month HC candidate usually falls flat on his face, remember the outrage when Gase and McAdoo got jobs while the Eagles "dithered," settling for Pederson. How'd that work out?

I think Lowie were very deliberate in their HC search, and kept looking until they found someone they were comfortable with as the new HC. They weren't going to be rushed, after AR, Chip and Pederson, they had a good idea what they wanted (a coach with a plan).

Great, but that has nothing to do with what I posted. Purposely delaying your search by a week and putting yourself at a disadvantage is a completely ridiculous thing to do if they had decided to fire Doug at the end of the season. What if the perfect guy were hired during that week? Or Sirianni had found another job.

Your position is ridiculous, sorry.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Meh, Wentz is gone, he'll probably have a nice run in Indy, but will be nothing special, 2020 was an aberration, but so was 2017, after 5 years he is what he is, a good but not elite QB.

Of course the Eagles lack young talent, that's why they're rebuilding. But coaching has been a big issue, outside of the OL, what talent have they developed the last three years?

RB - Scott, WR - none, TE - none, DL - Sweat, LB - Edwards, Singleton, DB - Mills. Good teams aren't built with just the first two days of the draft, they have multiple starters/top reserves that are coached up. I think they had decided to fire Doug, but gave him the interview out of respect for his tenure with the organization, but he was clueless about a rebuild.

In retrospect, since it's now obvious they were prepared to trade Wentz, I doubt they choose Sirianni to "fix" Wentz. He was the first candidate to blow away his interview, and after seeing his coaching staff, I think his vision for a teaching staff that can coach up players for a rebuilding team sold them. You don't hire a HC to fix a QB, then put him into play a week or two later - rather, it's more likely Siri was on board with Hurts over Wentz.

Eagles do their research, given the failure rate of top ten QBs, I'd be surprised if they used #6 on one unless they were absolutely in love, too many other holes. Better off seeing what you have with Hurts.

The key to 2021 is player development, they add some more draft picks and probably have 10 or so in both 2021 and 2022, but the key will be the ability to find players off trash heaps.

Okay we already know your take Howie

Completely agree with you. Why did they delay a week? Did one meeting with Doug really change that much? There's so much about the whole situation which stinks.

Because they have been winging it all year

I don’t disagree with that the fans are much harder to deal with and the media market is a monster. However other organizations don’t have nearly the amount of leaks coming out as the eagles do routinely and not stories where it’s leaked to the media the day desean gets released about gang ties.

That was an incredible thing they did.  Absolutely disgusting move by the organization.  The move itself was laughable, but the accompanying gang ties story leak was off the charts.

They released #10 following a ProBowl season.  He had something like 80+ catches, 1300 ish yards?  A bunch of TDs?  Too lazy to look it up.  But he was in the middle of a contract, signed for affordable money and had just had a career year.  In the middle of his prime.  And he was released.  Not traded... released.  The rest is history as he went on to torch the Eagles over the next few years, basically every time they met.

There is no other example of a move like that in NFL history.  Another mind boggling, insane decision by the same organization.  Notice a trend here.

But it was OK because they started Riley Cooper on the outside and boy could he block.  I realize I'm delving into past eras here, but it is important to remember the same owner and "GM" have been part of these decisions.  Same owner allowed this to happen back in the day.

To be fair to Howie, Desean being cut was a Chip decision, if I remember correctly. But still, Jeff would have signed off on it. Embarrassing either way.

Does anyone in SD or Arizona even know the name of their football team? 😝

There's a bit more media attention to the Eagles than in teams where football is more of an afterthought.

Lol you think people out here don’t follow the niners, warriors, giants, Suns or the Wildcats basketball team as diehards? They might not be philly fans but they have diehards who are invested. The Wildcats basketball out here as fanatical as it gets. They are backed up for 40-50 years to get season tickets. Those fans travel to Vegas for the pac 12 tournament every year and pack Vegas to the point they don’t have enough tickets to accompany all of them. And they just had a massive scandal. Nothing was leaked before that for years.

And i have a good friend that works for the timberwolves in scouting and front office and says there’s a ton of stories that never reached out cause they control what info the media gets from them and who they had inside their own building.

Afan, lets say for argument's sake that Howie blows the next two drafts. Do you fire him at that point, if the team that was in rebuild mode still looks like a bottom 10 unit heading into the 2023 season? Do you give him another year after that to try and fix it? At what point does the rope run out? And I'm not saying he will blow the next two drafts, I really hope he doesn't.

If he blows the next two drafts he's gone (or pushed upstairs, the same thing).

He needs to land 4-5 solid starters out of the next two drafts and some depth. But the last times the Eagles were in this situation:

2012:  Cox #12, Kendricks #46, Curry #59, Foles #88, Boykin #123, Kelly #153, Brown #229

2013:  Lane #4, Ertz #35, Logan #67, Barkley #98, Poyer #237

2016:  Wentz #2, Seumalo #79, Smallwood #153, Vaitai #169, Countess #196, Mills #233, Walker #251

A normal draft produces around 2 starters and 1 top reserve,  every team has its share of whiffs.

A good rebuild usually has one "jackpot" draft where picking high pays off with 3-4 starters and some depth.

Idk about that there was a report reid was close to getting rid of desean as well (after they released him) and on second thought decided not too. Feels like that was a total organizational decision from Lurie, chip and howie. The fact they just released him and got nothing is ridiculous. Desean who was breaking down and 32 still managed to get a draft pick in his return here

I hate what Howie has done since 2017, but I have no choice to hope he can turn it around these next two years. The silver lining may be that if he doesn't, it might finally be the end of him.

Some smoke on the Ertz front. Both LA teams and the Seahawks reportedly have interest. What's the upside there in terms of compensation? A 5th?

Howie doesn’t blow drafts. JJAW is going to blossom next year under Sirianni. Davion Taylor was a Comp 3, so basically a 7th and he has a super hit motor and a ceiling through the roof. Clayton Thorson is going to work out with a private QB guru this offseason and blossom and return to be a high quality backup. The last two drafts have been great!

A 5th would be a win, since everyone knows we will have to release him for cap reasons.

I actually dont hate the Davion Taylor pick. If I were to go Linebacker in the spot, it would have been him.

Honestly, I’ll rag on Howie all day long, it’s fun, but the vitriol really needs to start being directed towards Lurie now.

He can end this madness any time he wants with two simple words "you’re fired.”

Dude’s been a good owner the majority of his time here, but things have gone off the rails and he needs to get it back under control.

Agreed. He allowed this mess to happen and had the audacity to say Howie is surrounded by future GMs

That was a worse pick than Hurts imo
