Statistically he was a better DC than his predecessor( Mcdermott) and a better DC than his successor( Bowles) and better than billy davis ( low bar)as well. And none of them had to put up with the petulant jim Washburn-.

I think it would be hard to judge how he actually did or what he even did unless you were a player or in building. On the outside, he seemed like just a puppet. It's actually probably how Howie learned the puppet coach technique.
