No I’m looking at cap hit vs dead money for 2021 and 2022

Restructuring has nothing to do with dead money. Well... it has nothing to do with the current year’s dead money.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

I have no idea what you are even talking about at this point. I’m saying it doesn’t matter if they restructured him or not, he’s locked in to being here for the next two years because they already restructured him so many times.

And you are completely wrong. Restructuring creates more dead money which ties the team to the player longer than if they didn’t restructure and didn’t have dead money to move on from him.

A. 2016 drafted Smallwood in the 5th round.  2017 drafted Pumphrey in 4th round.  Spent a 4th round pick acquiring Jay Ajai in 2017.   Then they spent a 6th round pick trading for Jordan Howard.  Then a 2nd round pick drafting Sanders.  That's 5 draft picks.   And you can even add the additional assets/resources spent (Money acquiring free agents, time, etc etc)

Do you risk doing all of the above over again, over the course of 5 years or do you find a way to keep the guy?

B. I agree about Murray.

C. People wanted a bonafide #1 RB.   And who wouldn't after what happened in 2018?  We were signing people off the street to play RB.

D. You wouldn't and that's the point.   The Eagles will in all likelihood go with some sort of RB rotation.  I invision Sanders getting the types of touches Westbrook received..meaning he'll probably end up with 800-1200 yards rushing and another 300-600 yards receiving.   Sanders also isn't a "goal line" carrier...I doubt he will put up the same type of rushing TD's numbers that Jones put up.  (8 in 2018, 16 in 2019, 9 in 2020) Average of 11 rushing TD's over the past 3 seasons.

If Sanders continues to perform at a high level but in a "rotational" role, with less rushing TD's then some of the other top backs, he'll likely still demand a decent payday but probably not "top RB 3" money level.  And if he does demand 'top 3" RB money that means he likely played at a "Pro-Bowl" level.  Good problem to have, imo.

Pumphrey went before Aaron Jones and Marlon Mack in the draft. Just because they stupidly took a short twig over them doesn’t make it a rule it’s hard to draft a RB replacement. You also don’t have to trade a pick for a guy with a degenerative knee you only on planning running into the ground and not giving a second contract. Same with Howard.

And if Sanders in a rotation gets what you are saying he will it puts him at the same production as Aaron Jones minus the rushing TD’s. And since rushing TD’s are situational, that will mean nothing when it comes time to negotiate. He’s not going to put up similar stats as a guy who just got paid to be the #3-#4 richest RB but take less because he’s in a rotation.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Eagles do at backup QB. One name I could see the taking a flyer on... Mitch Trubisky

Ok, so next time it takes them 2-3 draft picks (Instead of 5) and 2-3 years (instead of 5 years) before finding "the guy".  So you're going to tell the team, the coaching staff, the fanbase, etc that they are going to let Sanders walk because "they don't want to pay a RB that much"?  Especially in 2 years, when the rebuild should be complete.  Good luck convincing the fanbase that the rebuild is "done" but they need to go into the season with a rookie RB as their #1 back.   (When they just cut their pro-bowl RB).

And at the end of the day, it's not as complicated as you think.  The Eagles have a certain amount of money allocated to the RB position.  They spent 23 million (total) on McCoy, 17 million (total)  on Sproles, plus another 5-10 million per year on other backs.  The Eagles have also (historically) paid their "star" players.  So between the amount the Eagles already have dedicated to the RB position plus the additional value Sanders brings as a "star player" I don't think the Eagles will have an issue paying Sanders, especially if Sanders wants to stay.

The best strategy, imo, is that you keep your #1 back and then you use late round picks (or UDFA)  to acquire 2nd and 3rd string backs.  That way your 2nd and 3rd string RB's will usually be on rookie/cheap deals, leaving enough room to pay your pro-bowl RB.

So reports are that the Eagles want a 3rd or 4th for Ertz.

If the recent restructures allow them to keep Ertz for 2021, they might as well do so.  Hurts has no one else to throw to and jacking up Ertz' stats for 2021 could get them a 4th round comp pick.

If any teams are motivated to trade for him, the Eagles should encourage 2022 draft picks.

Nah.  Unload him.  Get what you can.  Afan has already declared that there's no point in trying to win games for 2021 or even 2022 for that matter.   Besides, when they draft Kyle Pitts, they'd be forced to sit Ertz, Goedert or Pitts or run some weird 13 personnel group.

Yes. You are the only one here that wants to pay him top dollar. I don’t know how many times you need to see teams to give a huge second contract to a RB to end up regretting it in two years. It’s not as hard to replace them either.

😂

That is a point worth making though.  There is truly no room at the inn for Pitts/Ertz/Goedert.  If no Pitts, then you may be able to maximize your Ertz return simply by padding his 2021 stats back up and collecting on the comp pick.  Pitts and Ertz are not compatible on the field together.

If you really want to cover all tracks and want to outthink yourself, maybe you keep Ertz on the roster through the draft.  The Eagles, being a notorious 12 personnel team (and that comes from Lurie, it didn't leave the building with Doug) may be inviting someone to steal Pitts from them if they unload their primary receiving TE.

If you care so much about Carson go join the Colts message board and kiss his arse over there.

I think you're undervaluing Sanders as a player.  He's not "just a RB".  He'll likely be among the top 3-4 leading receivers on the team, among the leading scorers and he's a "homerun" threat whenever he touches the ball.  So no, it won't be "Easy to replace" him, imo.  Sanders was playing hurt most of the season and he was still among the best (if not the best) player(s) on the Eagles offense in 2020.

And tbh, this conversation is about a year and a half early.   Sanders needs to continue his high level of production and stay relatively healthy to command "top dollar".  Plus, we have no idea what the RB market will look like in 2 years.

And knowing our luck, Hurts struggles, Trubisky looks good and gets a long term deal.

How do you type and wash Carson’s jock strap at the same time? The avatar fits you! You have super powers!

Zach Ertz for Nick Foles and a late round pick.  Boom.

If the Eagles trade back from #6 and pick up an additional pick or two, I could get on board with Rhamondre Stevenson at #84.  Resembles a young Lagarette Blount a bit.

So, we’re back to what I said hours ago...

Does not restructuring Lane Johnson’s contract this year put Slater in play? (The question was asked because a lack of restructure makes it easier to part with Johnson in the future.)

Dead money in future years is what I brought up in my previous post.

There’s a question as to whether Slater projects as a OG at the NFL level more than a OT

His size makes me think he’s an NFL LG. However, I heard a lot of these talking heads disagree.

It’s interesting that a trade back to 9ish would still have almost all the names we’ve been discussing still in play. I don’t see much difference between projected pick 6 and 10.

Don’t do that. Don’t play a victim. You responded to me offensively first and you got a negative response. Don’t be a crybaby

Yeah, one would think trading back with DEN to #9 would net a 3rd round pick, with SF to #12 world bring a 2nd round pick, with NE would bring at least their 2022 1st round

Not sure I’d want to trade back further than #12; if the Eagles trade way back it will be a clear sign they’re eyeing 2022 and beyond.

LOL go back and check who initiated it. I even commented how you just replied to me out of nowhere and I didn't care about your hate towards Wentz

I get it that you hate the guy. I don't need to get quoted from you about your opinions on him. It's been noted and ignored. It's why I don't engage with you but you quote me. Maybe you should stop 🤷‍♂️

I responded to the post. You choose to attack the poster. Big difference.

BTW you know everyone can see and respond to your post right? Have you never responded to a post that wasn’t quoted for you? Come on now you sound like a 5 year old crybaby. Grow a pair.
