I love Wentz but that's a bridge too far

meh, My Mom was a huge Steeler fan since the early 70's. They are a good org, much better than we are. I have respect for them.

The year my mother passed away, I had the opportunity to have dinner with Terry Bradshaw in Dallas Texas, as he was the keynote speaker for our work event. I got to spend about 1 and 1/2 hours talking with him. He sat right beside me at dinner, and even ate food off my plate. Great guy. Down to earth, humble and hilarious.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Then you're a fugazi Eagle fan.  No real fan says this.  Either you're an Eagle fan or not.  You're now lumped in with Bacarty.  Congrats.

LOL Been an eagles fan since the late 70's. I will always be a Eagles fan. I'm just a realist. Doug and Howie fugazied this thing up. Ultimately thats Luries fault.

Cool story.

Not really.

F Pittsburgh.   90% of Steeler fans around the country are bandwagon fans.  Zero respect for bandwagon fans.

I get that. Same with Cowboy fans.

My guess is you've been a Steelers fan since the late 70's as well.

No, not really, I dont follow them. WHen the Eagles play them I am rooting for the Birds. But I do watch a lot of their games since I live in Central PA, and they are on a lot.

Lurie should be asking Howie what his plan is about the cap, these aging players, and what his draft board looks like

I assume those are guys already on the staff?

Seriously, if Wentz goes to the steelers, I'll be watching & Rooting for them. It isn't his fault Howie and Doug were allowed to drive this team down into the toilet

Meh.  I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting him to succeed if he leaves. I've wanted Andy Reid to have success as well as Nick Foles.  But if it came down to the Chiefs (or whatever team Foles is/was playing for) I'd still root for the Eagles to win.

I'm not saying people that play/played for the steelers are bad people. I'm saying the steelers and their fans suck. Sorry can't root for them. And if Bradshaw would have ate anything from my play that beech is going down, capiche?

We’re trading Carson and Doug to Jax for the #1 and getting Urban Meyer as the HC.   Book it.

Psssttt. Doug isn’t getting fired.

There was a rumor about Doug wanting out... so maybe that's what this is about.   Doug got a little more time to think on it before making a final decision, and this meeting with Lurie is a chance to discuss it in the end and make a final decision.    If I were Doug, I'd want out of this quagmire.   But, then we'll have to find a new coach that agrees to work under Howie.   That should be fun.

Just how dumb is Doug?

Might not be dumb at all in that.  That's chess level stuff.    Let's consider the rumor that Doug is unhappy here as being true.  If Doug forces them to fire him, by pushing the Press Taylor thing, he gets paid for the final year of his contract, while still getting what he ultimately wants, which is to get out of this mess.   So, if Doug is that unhappy, playing the Press Taylor card might be his best chance of getting paid to leave... He would literally have his cake and be able to eat ice cream too!

On the other hand, if Doug's in his last year (presumably) then he's going to want to go down his way, not Howie's way.  I wouldn't trust Howie Roseman at all right now.  Howie is always looking out for Howie.  He's got his new fall guy and he's going to play that hand to save himself.    So, Doug wants his people around him, not whomever Howie chooses.

The only scenario that doesn't make sense is if Doug still believes he has a long term future here (how could he think that?).   In that case, this is dumb.   But, is there any reason for any one to think that this could be a long term relationship at this point?

Howie has already explained that...

It just all sets up so conveniently for Howie. Always. He was doing what the coaches wanted. He deferred to a veteran front office guy on a certain pick. He let Schwartz pick the veteran LB.

No matter what, the wrong decision was made over and over. That’s on the guy with roster control

Lurie had an interesting comment about how Howie’s job description is much bigger than picking players. If that’s the case, maybe he needs to focus on those other roles and hire a GM to make those decisions.

Douglas and Weidl were those guys. Brought in specifically for personnel evaluation and the draft.

As far as the "strong GM" - how many franchises have been deep sixed by strong GMs who "knew what they were doing b/c they were real football men." There's no right way to construct a winning organization, only right people.

As far as "bad contracts" that list begins and ends with Jeffrey, who I think they overrated, but was that Pederson begging for him, or Howie forcing him on Peddy?

DeSean, might have been a little nostalgia, but he's also the most dangerous deep threat in the NFL when healthy - a gamble but not stupid - DeSean is the kind of player that can put you over the top in the playoffs. A luxury item for a team trying to return to the SB.

Malik was just bad luck, very durable one gap DT who got benched b/c new DC went to two gap system, then comes here and immediately gets injured. That's not a bad move, that's just bad luck. Same with Wallace, who never missed a game until he was signed by the Eagles. Maybe they need to burn a bushel of sage in the Linc.

Backloading deals with your top players, that's the only way to keep the window open, otherwise you have to let players walk and can't sign anyone. The combination of two bad drafts by Chip and bad player development (all those Eagles starting for other teams), left few options - patch or rebuild.

Doug is part to blame for it being a quagmire.

But the meeting today is about Lurie taking control of coaching decisions AGAIN.   What makes a good leader is having the right people around them and let their do their job.  A good leader doesn't take over and do their job for someone under them.  That is not empowering, that's enabling.  The new Lurie is closer to Snider/Jones then he is to the old Lurie.

100% true.

Lurie is the biggest problem right now, because he's created this culture of super-collaboration where no one is truly held accountable, until he says so and then he makes a move.  It's gross.

His decisions about his "under coaches" in the past do not indicate that this is chess level stuff.

   Yeah... ok.

So, the new fall guy is Chip.  Sorry, that ship sailed.

It won a SB, then got back to the playoffs the next two years with a legitimate shot at going deep into the playoffs.

People are overreacting to an injury plagued bad season on a team everyone knew had to start a rebuild at some point.

Before we won a SB, people were willing to do anything to win one, even if it meant years wandering through the desert.

Well, welcome to the NFL desert folks.

That's likely true.   Just trying to give him the benefit of the doubt on that.  He was the HC to bring us a Super Bowl.  So, I don't really hate the guy.   I just don't want him around here any more.

Thanks for being around for the SB Doug, but time to go.

No interest in Press Taylor being our OC. No interest in anyone on the staff, regardless of who it is, being the DC.

Yes, I for one was willing to do just that. That said it doesn't mean that Howie and Doug don't need to be held accountable, does it?

Thanks Howie.   I was never one to say that... so forgive me for not bowing at the Howie/Lurie alter you've created.    And as I pointed out yesterday, there were other ways to CONTINUE to compete after the Super Bowl, without digging your own grave.   But, Howie dug it, and now they are looking for someone to throw into it.

Lurie needs to back out of the decision making.   Hire good people and let them do it.   He needs to stop finding 'consultants' with no real skin in the game and just let people do their jobs.  Stop putting buffers around Howie, or stop giving Howie final say... because if Howie has final say (like has been mentioned repeatedly), then he gets final blame.

Desean - bad, Malik Jackson - bad.  Howie gambled on declining players and paid them like top tier FAs.   That's DUMB.  But, I went through that exact list yesterday and you ignored it.   It's a waste of time discussing this with you.

I honestly wouldn't care if he stayed if he would/could change and had a great staff beneath him (change would include him never calling plays again). If there was a solid plan going forward than I would argue that both Howie and Doug deserve the chance to dig themselves out of this hole. But I doubt there is any real change out of either of them
