Neither did Ryans or Hicks.  It was the other one for both of them as well.

I don't think you can point at this for reason to not give that extension honestly.  Had this team lived up to their 'potential' this year, Brooks might be coming off IR and starting this week.  Dudes got the determination and resolve that I wish half the kids that work for me had.  He's an absolute warrior and freak of nature.  He was near contact practice ready at 6 months post this last achilles surgery.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

I think it only applies to becoming a head coach and GM. Why i asked.

Don’t worry it’s like beetle juice. Have to say it three times.

If this is the case then you should have a value attached to each position coach in the NFL (no matter the race/ethnicity of the coach) if you want to avoid retread HC.

DC/OC gets hired as a HC- 4th round pick

A position coach gets promoted to DC/OC - 3rd round pick

Position coach gets HC job- 2nd round pick

HC goes to Management- 2nd round pick

and so on down the line.

I think the rule is ridiculous and devalues the job a minority coach is doing.  The more that come up the ranks, the more will get jobs.  NFL teams want to win...at all costs.  Acquiring more draft picks simply by having a coach hired away is going to force teams to want minority coaches on the team just to get the pick when they leave.

The NFL owners care about winning. A good owner would prefer a good coach who can lead his team for 10 years, over two 3rd round comp picks, which are widely overvalued in the Blog especially. So if this rule allows for more minorities to get a chance to land top tier coaching gigs, then so be it. If they are bad coaches anyway, they aren't going to just get hired because COMP PICKZZZZ.

They aged out because they went with players like Desean and Alshon.

  • If you signed older players with no commitment, then you didn't paint yourself into a corner.  Leaving room to manuever for other YOUNG talent.
  • If you signed the younger players with talent, instead of the older players with huge salaries who never get on the field, maybe you didn't actually 'age out'.
  • If you don't trade away draft picks for players that offer nothing to your roster, maybe you'd have the ammunition you need to target the player you really wanted, instead of having to settle for the one that fell to you.
  • If you don't suck at identifying young talent in the draft, and trying to fill holes through the draft... or you didn't get cute drafting a backup TE in Round 2 to stick it to your rival, but focused on getting younger foundational position players, you might not have aged out.

This isn't about 1 or 2 moves, but an institutional failure, with all roads leading back to Howie/Lurie... Lowie.

They aged out b/c with the injuries, Howie had to keep adding players, and it was a domino effect, Jerrigan to Malik to Hargrave, Wallace to DeSean, and so on.

Imagine this defense with Cox, Hester and Hector at DT. Let Jeffrey walk and maybe they sign someone worse.

If he stopped restructuring contracts, he would have had to dump a number of veterans without the cap room to add more FAs, i.e., start the rebuild.

So what year do you start the rebuild?

Sure in hindsight he could have made some different moves, but the real problem was bad injury luck.

And I doubt Howie just goes out and gets players without talking to his coaches, like Doug, who would be a better fit for what you do, Tate or ???.

What Howie does is work with the scouts to decide what value to put on a player, i.e., Anderson might be worth a 3rd but not a 2nd.

I'm pretty sure its only for a HC or GM hiring. Never saw it for assistant coaches.

You’re right — it’s only Head Coach or General Manager positions.  3rd round comp pick for two consecutive seasons

I love Brooks as a person.  BUT... his contract ran through 2021.  They didn't need to extend him.  They only had to extend him to free up cap space... kicking the can, so that they could sign more older, expensive players.   Same with Johnson.   His contract ran through 2021... and they didn't need to extend him either.

I love them both, but there was no need to extend them, other than can kicking.

If you keep re-signing guys who have a history of injuries, and they keep getting injured, when does it change from bad luck to bad planning?

You do know there's a stupid number of people that buy bottled water on a regular basis instead of buying a water filter right?

I'm split here, it's hard not to justify extending 2 All Pros in their prime.  Hindsight, you're right though.

Lol its funny, I was grocery shopping last week, and we have a new shelter in place emergency order foisted upon us this week. People were loading up carts with like 4-5 cases of bottled water....like, the tap water here is completely safe and not in any danger, at all....people are ridiculous.

At least it was water. I’ve seen people hoarding milk at the grocery store. Like cart full of milk.

Odd irony here...we just received threats where I'm at on 'attacks' on the water systems here.  I almost had to change the analogy I made based off that!

Phillies are like hey eagles hold. My. Beer.

We have milk in bags up here, you can freeze it so it lasts longer

Edit - I'm not referencing those "milk bags" either!

Mosher and Caplan on the HC search.

Analytics will play a big part in interviews. Eagles want it strongly embraced. If you don't embrace it, you aren't getting the job.

Kafka - really young, lacks experience. Mutual interest. Will require a leap of faith because of his age, lack of experience.

Moore - due diligence, intel on Dallas' offense might be a reason they're interviewing him.

Lincoln Riley - As of Thursday night, he has not turned down the job. He's still deciding if he wants to take a formal interview with the Eagles. Not completely shut out for him as of yet. If he agrees to an interview, take notice, it would mean he's very serious.

Arthur Smith - he's the top candidate of most teams, the "belle of the ball." Smith blew the Eagles away in the interview.

Brian Daboll - will he leave Buffalo? It's a great situation for him. He's ready, just needs to commit.

Joe Brady - put together an all-star cast of coaches he wants to bring in if he gets a job. Important part of the job is building a staff. Word in league circles is he might not be ready because of his age, but not sure if Eagles are one of those teams that feel that way.

Mayo - unbelievably detailed in defensive schemes and tactics. Very young and raw. He's basically their assistant DC.

Mosher thinks better than average chance Duce gets the job. Caplan doesn't agree.

You can freeze the cartons and cut the top 2/3rds off and melt the water that remains!!!!  NEXT LEVEL THINKING

That is super nice. That would make sense. There’s were the gallon plastic cartons and I’m guessing they just froze it in that.

The more the days go by, the more I think they're going to give Duce the job. He's a company guy, grown internally, and probably won't have an issue with the power structure with Roseman. I'd hate the move, but it would all be dependent on who Duce brings in as his coordinators. The problem with that is if the coordinators do their job efficiently, they're most likely out of here in a few seasons getting HC jobs of their own and you're back to square one in finding an adequate replacement. Something that they couldn't do when Reich left.

Duce seems well-respected among the players and more of a CEO style HC which is great, but I don't think that's sustainable for success if you're at least not innovative and creative in your own right and are instead relying on others to bring that ingenuity to the game-planning or scheme.

The biggest issue that I have is that Staley, to my knowledge at least, has not had any interviews with any other teams.

IDK what it is about milk in a bag, but the taste is so much better, and like you said, you can freeze it as opposed to jug or carton'd milk.

Hard to believe there's a WR out there making Alshon's money who's worse.  $16M for 6 receptions?

Like I said, its not the rebuild, its the WAY they rebuilt.  Yes.. injury bad luck.   When the injury luck piles up like it has, its time to stop calling it 'luck' and start to look for the cause, because its not 'luck' anymore.   It is now, 'the new norm' (to quote the phrase).  There must be something wrong with what they are doing in terms of strength and conditioning, practice, sleep habits, food, whatever.  That's not my area of expertise, but when you have this many injuries over this many years, then its no longer 'luck'.  Its caused by something and they need to get it fixed.

As for the communication between Howie and Doug, I am not privy to it, but there's been a clear miscommunication for years now.  You can't tell me that bringing in players that the coaches can't figure out how to incorporate is a working model?   It wasn't just Tate, it was also Avery.  It makes no sense.

The last thing I'll say on the Anderson front is this:  Yes, there is a cost you need to put on a guy like Anderson.  Clearly, the Eagles didn't have him valued as highly as the Jets in the trade talks.  Meanwhile, I will flip it around and ask: "Does Howie not work with the scouts to decide what value to put on a player like Desean?"  Did the scouts tell him that bringing in a 32 year speed player, virtually guaranteed to get hurt was worth the same money as a player who is 6 years younger who has never gotten hurt?

This Howie as an information gatherer, and he's only as good as the people around him nonsense is all well and good.  But, I just heard from the owner that they have 5 other GM candidates in the front office... So, Howie is gathering information from these brilliant people around him, and all the moves he's made over the last 3 years have basically been one flop after another.   When will the information gatherer, and the ones giving the information be held responsible by the owner?    The worst part of that press conference to me, was that I truly believe that Lurie thinks the way he explained things.  I think he thought Nate Sudfeld was truly 'unstoppable' as a QB in his first start, yet the team was stopped... constantly, because they couldn't SCORE.  They lost that game 6-0.  How is the QB 'unstoppable' yet the team comes away with 0 points.  It wreaks of an organization that overvalues its own process, its own people and its own history.  They are quickly becoming history.   They need a slap of reality.  This season should have been that.  But alas, it seems it was not.   It will be more of the same group think, the overvaluation of our own.

I'm just glad they caught lightning in a bottle and won a Super Bowl.  From all reports... they thought about replacing Doug and Reich after 2016... not sure why they didn't, but without them, the Super Bowl never happens.

Glad to have you around again afan.  Its a fun conversation.
