I heard the perfect description of last season this morning and it was described as "coaching malpractice."  We all watched the games, and that's exactly what I saw every Sunday.  Vertical routes, giving up on the run, no creativity, no pre-snap movement, no getting the fast players in space, and a QB that didn't handle it well at all.  However, I'd much rather give Wentz a shot to prove himself in this new system since he has the talent and has proven he can be insanely special.  With that being said, he sucked last year, and he pissed me off every weekend.  But I have 1000x more faith in restoring him than handing the reigns to a guy that doesn't have talent outside of his legs and his "intangibles."

Apart from our apparent disagreement on Hurts' talent, I agree with you on Wentz. It's all the Eagles can do to give Carson the best shot possible. If Hurts plays well, we still have a good QB. He's just not Carson Wentz. Not everything is 'about the money' but I'll concede that this much is: The better Carson looks next season; (and I'm going to say preseason, because that's all he'll get looking like 2020) the better chance of the team getting something back for their investment. I'm open to him looking like more than Joe Flacco, but he's a long way from even there at this stage. Colin Kaepernick showed me more in 2013 than Wentz has EVER showed me.

I turned 38 today and have lost 52lbs since February. I’m very rarely ever proud of myself, but I’m feeling pretty proud today and thought I’d share. Carry on.

  • At this point, I’d like to see a former HC on the staff, but the biggest coaching news left is whether Stout stays.  BOOOOOOOOM

Yes but did Caplan use his two coveted lines on the podcast

”i knew last time but i couldn’t say anything cause things can change”

”I’ll have more next time I can’t disclose right now”

Yes, said he heard Gannon was gonna be the DC, but didn’t wanna mention it because he knew the Bears were interested so things could change.

Yikes if they hire Culley...

To be fair, he explained that he got burned once reporting a coaching hire, and the coach backed out of the deal because a different team offered more money. So he waits until confirmation before throwing it out there.

I still think it’s bieniemy that gets that job. Unless he’s said I’m not coming due to watson still wanting out.

As much as we all dislike Culley, after Doug’s new War coach every year approach, we might have welcomed him back.  Leslie should get the job because that means he will be available for the Eagles to hire as DC when Gannon moves on somewhere as HC.

Respect Beasley for that.

Sounds about right for your typical trailer park meth heads.

Just kidding. That's pretty impressive. If I ever see him at a bar he gets a Budweiser and pack of Marlboro Reds from me.

Will Patullo be the QB coach as well as pass game coordinator I wonder?  That’s how the Eagles had it structured with Press Taylor

I see he was the Jets QB coach in 2015 and 2016.

I've been a long time lurker and appreciator of "the blog." Going back to douglas704 days. I understand now that without a much greater investment of time and energy my occasional efforts to contribute to the discussion are not appreciated. And I don't mean this in a wimpering "woe is me" way. I really do get that this community needs ways of moderating who is in and who is out to keep the discussion at a certain level. Basic sociology. All good. Just maybe reflect on whether calling everyone you're unfamiliar with a "clone" of someone else you don't like is really the best way. Or maybe just carry on as you were.

I'll go back to lurking and liking now.

This wasn't any long John Wayne windup either with lots of time(where he gets sacked from across the field). Hurts cycled that pass like an M4 carbine on the run.

I think the actual throw was around 52 yards

All I know is last night I went and looked at the last 20 Super Bowl winners. Only 3 out of the last 20 have one with a quarterback that I wouldn’t consider close to being a Hall of Fame type quarterback. The three were Flacco, Brad Johnson and foles (Eli i think is a borderline guy but if you want to include him then 5). So 15% chance you can win a super bowl over the last 20 years without a great QB. Yes i get Brady eats up a bunch of those wins. The teams who were consistently in the running and got far in the playoffs had those type of QBs. This is obvious to all of us.

The fact is it’s highly likely any team for the foreseeable future has to beat Patrick Mahomes in a SB or building the team to beat him and the chiefs. that means you have to have a quarterback that’s able to play at a high enough level to keep you in that game and potentially out duel Patrick Mahomes.

I don’t have the answer to this or anyone on here but the Eagles have to be realistic with themselves. If you do not think you can salvage Carson Wentz to make him back into what he was in 2017 then you really aren’t going to compete for a SB once the rebuild is complete (assuming it goes well). That’s the type of quarterback play you need in order to win a Super Bowl and consistently be in the running with the direction of how the NFL is going. The Eagles also have to be honest with themselves to think if Jalen hurts could also be like Carson 2017. The answers are unknown.  you have to be confident they can and if you have strong doubts then they might searching/finding that QB they do believe can.

There's been a bunch of games where it was the defense that won. Defenses get screwed a lot so it's all on the offense and just outbattling the opposite QB

We'll see though because Bucs Dline is really good and Chiefs just lost a tackle

Seems like it might.  He might have torn an ACL in the NC game.

I haven't heard the extent of the injury, but he left in what appeared to be a significant amount of pain, and it was a non-contact type injury.

Some stuff from Caplan and Mosher:

Both still kinda surprised they went Sirianni since Lurie always likes to try to be on the cutting edge with offense and they said from talking to people around the league Sirianni hasn’t coached under any cutting edge offenses. He wasn’t under Shanahan, wasn’t with the Patriots, etc. Thought if Lurie went assistant he’d go to one of those teams.

Said people around the league who study thought the Chargers thought their offense got really stale toward the end of the season. Not really sure why. It could be Lynn as he’s a conservative coach by nature. That said, thought Steichen did a decent job.

Lurie himself wanted Gannon too, not just Sirianni. Lurie knew who Gannon was and was someone he coveted. Caplan heard Gannon will be a head coach within 2 years if he’s successful here. Thought really highly around the league "a Brandon Staley type” coach for DC. Will have some Mike Zimmer influences and some cover 2 influences. Will blitz more than Schwartz.

People around the league who study the Eagles told them they thought Jim Schwartz’s scheme was stale and people around the league just didn’t like the defense that Schwartz ran. However they noted his bottom line numbers were pretty good, so the long run will prove if they were right.

Patullo is a guy Sirianni loves. He’s right hand man. Will be his most trusted advisor. He’s to Sirianni what Sirianni was to Reich. He knew he had to have him if he got a head coaching job.

So... did we hire Siriani to get Gannon (for a few years). Seems like there could have been an easier way to get the guy 🤔

Would have loved him here as QB coach or OC. Heck, I would have interviewed him as HC.

I know what angle Trotter is going for though. Both had a hand in his success. Unless Herbert is just an elite talent who could have done it with anyone.

I mean, its Cole Beasley, what do you think he's going to respond with when you ask "hey let me buy you a drink and some food, what do you want?"

I guess he could be a Coors banquet man

It's possible. It's also one of the reasons I suggested McNulty for TE's coach. He'd bring some veteran knowledge and he's also worked in the NFL with QB's through his career. Would kind of create a QB coach by committee dynamic though, and we probably don't need that.

I don’t disagree with you that there’s been defenses that have won Super Bowls for teams over that time. However they’ve had great quarterback play to get to that point. Most of the teams that are consistently competing for the Super Bowl have one of those quarterbacks. Which is more the point that if you’re going to beat the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes which is the model right now in the NFL then you’re going to need a quarterback of that stature to do it. You can try to do it the way of Brad Johnson, Joe Flacco or Nick Foles getting really hot but the odds are not in your favor that it’s going to be sustainable

My 'scrutiny of blame' for a team's problems becomes more narrow and focused over time. 1-2 seasons it can be player related. 3-5 it's in the coaches, and longer than that, it's a problem with FO and owner. Here's to a great year!
